Portman still deserves some grief but he deserves far more credit then he's gotten in supporting and loving his son. Keep in mind the family above forced their son into conversion therapy.

It should also be noted (i'm not sure if they are still dating) the son is/was dating the cousin of U.S. Senator Jeff Flake, who hasn't changed his position on gay marriage either despite having a gay family member. That cousin was also forced into therapy.

It's why I won't ever fully condemn Portman. Already he is facing threats of being primaried even though his election will be three years away. Whatever his motives are,he stands behind his son, something these other sorry excuses for human beings won't do.

Oh I agree. Portman deserves praise for, if nothing else, getting a whole lot of other senators and politicians to come out in support of homos getting married even though it isn't about them or their family personally.

Yeah... it was amazing after Portman broke the ice as a Republican, democrats galore were crawling out of the wood work to be on the right side of history.

I was blessed with a family that told me when i came out... "yeah we knew. Just waited for you to come to it in your own time" ... "Pass the bread"

Literally like nothing had happened... hmm maybe I should get a complex over that..........

JayHawk, I don't know if you have shared this with us........but how has it been for you in the Navy, post DADT?

Were you always "out" in the military, or did you wait until after DADT was repealed? Or are you still closeted to most of your military brothers & sisters? How is it like being an openly gay man in the military in 2013?

it is ... well just relieving. I was open with some and closed to other previously. Mostly because their were legal ramifications to admitting your were gay to the wrong person. Now that veil is lifted.

I am openly gay in that I speak of my ex-ex since he lives with me again. Yet for those I would normally never have a personal conversation with i don't make it a point to ensure they know I am gay. it is just a normal part of life now... I have had to correct some folks making gay jokes but I did that before DADT fell. Discrimination and bashing folks is wrong no matter the law on serving.

So all in all it is huge relief for me.

True and if we can embrace President Obama for having a public change of heart then we should embrace Portman in that respect as well.

Thank you for sharing, JayHawk.

And thank you for your service to our country. ..| (*8*)

I have a lot of regard for Rob Portman's actions....Salmon is too afraid to do the right thing despite saying how much he loves his son. Ultimately, he isn't supporting him by his continued stance against gay marriage...the way he puts it shows he would like to "evolve" but for either religion or politics hasn't "evolved" there yet. The Senator Jeff Flake cousin being forced into "therapy"... that's the worst of all... yep, Portman does deserve a lot of credit for just doing the right thing by his son, and for other gay parents and children.

To MSNBC's credit, several people there including Lawrence O'Donnell,Rachel Maddow, Melissa Harris-Perry,Howard Fineman and Krystal Ball HAVE called out the Democrats for jumping on the gay marriage bandwagon now instead of 2012,Lawrence in particular being critical of Bill Clinton for his role in DOMA.
Jon Tester of Montana also has a gay son,yet didn't come out for full marriage equality even after he got safety reelected. And for those speaking on Portman not talking about Ohio's gay marriage ban,Tester isn't doing that much to get rid of Montana's either.
Keep in mind Portman IS facing a backlash for supporting his son. The Christian groups that helped in 2010 have made it clear they will try and get him primaried in 2015/16. Quite a bit of fanmail on his facebook page as well.
So while Portman's past record can't be ignored,as I've said before, unlike so many other Republicians,he is willing to support his son and not keep him a second class citizen to keep parts of the Reich wing base happy.

Sad to say Saucy but many of them believe it's a choice, just like choosing to do drugs or steal and thus can't be supported. The sheer number of LGBT homeless youth tells us that.

I don't think he'll get booted out over this. Any further to the right, and that person won't get elected.
But make no mistake, the fury he's facing is what is happening in the GOP right know as it swings further to the right.
