Just before the tragedy struck

I watched Al Pacino's"Cruising" today. Not-so-great movie but it was shot around 1979 and 1980 and had an excellent portrayal of Pre-AIDS gay lifestyle, or at least a segment of gay lives. I had this feeling that these guys are unaware of a looming tragedy that is just about to strike. Life is so unpredictable.

Cruising is one of the most clichéd movies ever made about the "gay lifestyle." Honey, you've been listening to too many Jerry Falwell sermon reruns.

Oh come on, give me a break. And the movie was indeed cliched but I was talking more about the time it was shot rather than the movie itself. Just before the AIDS crisis.

This brings me back to my pre-college days when I was still very niave. I often wonder what it really was like before HIV came into the scenes.

That was and still is a part of the gay lifestyle. Obviously things have changed due to HIV, but men are dogs and dogs will bury bones wherever they can. I can relate to them more than the people who want to live a pseudo straight life of marriage and call their mate a husband. I've never been conservative and that is the conservative part of gay life.
