I know this show (which ended like 6 years ago) is probably long since old news for many of you. But back when “Queer as Folk” originally aired, I did not have cable or satellite and therefore knew nothing about series. Sometime later I did read something about it, and thought it sounded really awesome, but then I forgot all about it. It wasn't until last week, I was reminded of the show while reading some Doctor Who related article about Russell T. Davies, and it mentioned that he had directed/produced the original British version of “Queer as Folk”. So I decided to get the American version of the series and watch it. So far I am most of the way though season 1, and I have to say, I am thoroughly LOVING every minute of it!!! The writing is superb, with some great lines makes me laugh so hard! I love all of the characters; they are awesome! (Though sometimes I feel like reaching though the screen and slapping the crap out of Brian for some of the rude, insensitive and heartless things he sais and does.) Oh, and the guy that played Justin was SOOOOOOOOOOOO cute! OMG! Then again most of the guys on that show are hot. Hell, if I thought for a moment that Pittsburg was really like it is in the show and had that many cute gay guys running around everywhere, I'd move there tomorrow!

Well anyway, I was just curious to know what the rest of you thought about this amazing, one-of-a-kind, gay-themed show.

I've seen both the UK version and the US version. I like the US version better. The UK version is short...about 4 hours for season 1...under 3 hours for season 2. Because it's longer I think the US version was able to give the characters more depth. (There will be lots of people who disagree with me).

When you get to season 4 of the US version, you see that the show changes a bit. Lots of people stopped watching about this time. Don't do that. If you watch them all the way through seasons 4 & 5 are really good.

Which character do identify with the most? For me it was Michael.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the show, but it really was a favorite out of desperation. The only other show I had back then was Six Feet Under; To curb my gay appetite, I mean.

While I haven't even seen the whole episode, I have seen a few clips from the British version, and from what little I've seen, it doesn't look half as well made, or nearly as bold as its American counterpart. I still can't believe that they got away with showing SO much on American TV...even if it was on Showtime. Not that I'm complaining one bit, mind you! LOL

But yah, I will definitely be watching it all the way though to the end. I'm totally hooked now!

As to which character(s) I relate to the most, I think it’s a cross between Michael and Ted. I have a personality very similar to Michael's, always trying to do the right thing, always taking care of others at the expense of my own happiness. Also, like him, I've always been something of a nerd...only in my case it was Star Trek and other sci-fi rather then comic books, per say. But the older I get (I'm 37) the more I feel a little like Ted...the older guy that is always hanging out with younger guys, trying to fit in, and yet most of the younger guys he is attracted to want nothing to do with him, and as a result he suffers from rather low self-esteem and self-doubt.

Interestingly, I "dated" a guy when I was in my early to mid 20's who was just like Brian. He was drop-dead gorgeous, amazing in bed (when I could get him there), and I was so in love with him; the only problem was he had the same philosophy of life as the character Brian, only in my friend's case he was bi so it was mostly girls he was chasing around after. It seemed like every few days he was screwing some new girl that I had never even seen before. We were best friends, and spent most of our time together. He knew exactly how I felt about him, but although he liked me, liked spending time with me, and even fooling around with me from time to time when he didn't have some girl on the line, he never really felt the same way about me as I did about him. Yet he did everything in his power to keep me dependant on him, and to string me along. So let’s just say I know EXACTLY how Michael and Justin feel about Brian. Been there, done that!

Sorry guys no doubt about it the UK version is by far the best of the two .
They got Manchester spot on , that is one party town especialy down Canal St . *|*

I'm not trying to create converts for the US version. I liked the UK version.

But, you have to admit the silly sci/fi Doctor Who like ending of series 2 was pretty bad.

I went out my way to find the UK version here.

Canada based C1TV owned the north american rights and when they went under, the show became very hard to find.

I found series one on ebay, got outbid several times before winning a copy. And ended up have to buy series two on VHS from Wolfe Video, because it was the only place I could find it.

TBH, I hated it. Storyline sucked. No diversity. Hal sparks was the only good actor, yet his character was hardly ever shown. They ended it on a cliffhanger.

I think a few years ago I gave QAF another chance, but I couldn't stop cringing myself. It's such a horrible show.

Liked the UK version better mostly because the British version of Brian is so much hotter and way more screwed up. In terms of storyline the US version is soo bad. Walking sex crazed stereotypes. In terms of softcore its okay. Really the only reason to keep watching is Michael/Hal Sparks who they never concentrated on enough. There were a few redeeming qualities like the HIV/AIDS storylines. Other than that, Brian and Justin are the most annoying characters ever.

I loved Sharon Gless most in the series. If only all mums are like that.
I hated her in Nip Tuck.
What an excellent actress. Long live Sharon

Brian and justin was vomit inducing. The only character I liked was Michael. Everytime Justin came on the screen I fast forwarded.

Then you missed a lot. Sunshine was a well developed character.

I didn't like Emmet at the beginning but he grew on me after he was "cured" from the Aids scare. Loved it when they taught Debbie how to give a blowjob.
