Drenching celebrations began ahead of the Thai New Year - or Songkran - festival, which begins today. As is customary, the aim is get yourself and those around you as wet as possible

I cycle past this small garden every day on my way to and from work. Basically it's a tiny piece of county council property he reclaimed from them.

A few years ago in other parts of town some of these reclaimed gardens were ripped up and destroyed. Some civic twit had done a survey and it was decided it was in the interest of the city if this kind of gardening was prohibited. We are talking about "gardens" that are the size of a few handkerchiefs or at best a small car. Thank god schemes to make neighbourhoods look better and more cheerful have been started since then, so these small plots are left alone nowadays.

I just had to stop and take some pics. It has been so lovingly done. Never fails to bring a smile when I see it.

While I was taking the pics the owner came outside and we had a chat. The old man was so proud of his work. He told me all about how he likes mixing his colours and how one of the shrubs in his garden was so special because it flowers in 3 different colours (red, white and blue - the colours of the Dutch flag). I showed him the pics I'd took and was glad I finally got the chance to thank him for giving me such joy.

It changes with the seasons. For spring it's tulips, daffodils & hyacinths.

This one looks like it's on fire. Sums up what today was like perfectly!

Maarten van Rossumhuis.
Built in 1518 in pre-renaissance style by Maarten van Rossum and sold after his death to a number of owners before it was sold to the city of Arnhem in 1828. A lot of the statues and other adornments had been removed before that and more were taken down since it changed ownership. It was used since then as the council house. In 1898 it was restored to it's former (and present day) glory. In 1965 the new Municipal building was built and the Maarten van Rossumhuis (huis = house) was connected to it.
Nowadays the Mayor of Arnhem has her office in there and it's used for wedding ceremonies.
