The monsoon season in India is always awesome and erratic. The death toll in flooding so far this year has surpassed 500 across India. A rickshaw puller in Calcutta coped with a particularly heavy downpour this week.

In India, rain is the key to nearly every facet of life. In Puchaldini, villagers went ahead with preparations for a festival appealing to the gods to send monsoon rains, even after a deluge destroyed crops, drowned cattle and goats and killed 10 people. One villager gave his oxen festive touches of paint.

It was in response to the people camped out across from Lafittes with the "Repent - Jesus Saves" signs, etc. Later that day, the religious folks brought out a full sized cross and marched down Bourbon with it in tow.

No that's an old wives' tale, look at the beak on them, it's ideal for smashing open the shells of molluscs and from what I remember they eat worms hiding in the sand and earth as well.
