With gas prices the way they are here in the US we may see this in our cities soon. I visited a bike shop today as a matter of fact.

Great pics guys ..|

Here's a few I took last year at the World Living Statues event that was held here in Arnhem and the first time I got a chance to take pictures. It'll be held again this year in August for the 10th time. Usually draws huge crowds from all over Holland and people, both professional and amature, from all over the world take part in it.
The Ice Prince....

This is a typical township. The back of Table Mountain in the background. The government says it wants to replace all shacks in "informal settles" with low cost housing by 2010. There are just so many people that these areas pop up all over.
Just a few hundred metres from where I live are dozens of people living in shacks under a freeway bridge. They really have no choice, but at the same time are a major security risk resulting in those with better homes becoming prisoners in their own fortified homes.

Canterra Tower - Calgary....I took this photo this evening while on a walk. I love some of the buildings here.

I have always liked a nice "pansy". :D

Taken on my terrace this afternoon. Sorry it is not spectacular but as said above I just like pansies.

I love them, too! I had three beautiful pots on my porch all winter long! The prettiest were a purplish gray color with very pronounced "faces."

wit_africa, I continue to enjoy your photos! Your home is a land of phenomenal contrasts in so many ways! Keep 'em coming!!

Wow, I thought that was fascinating, and I looked around on the Internet for more info, and found this:

http://www.worldstatues.nl/

I don't know what it says on the site, but the pictures were pretty interesting... I've never heard of anything like... How long do they pose like that? And how do they keep from blinking or scratching an itch...?

I'm surprised the site isn't in English well anyway in short it says something about last years jury and public winners, when it will be held this year and it explains the rules if you want to take part. I'd have to read it in more detail to tell you more.

Why don't you get together with some other jubbers and come over? Let me know what you like to be and I'll do the costumes...I think I can lay my hand on a peacock costume somewhere
icon_biggrin.gif
then there's an owl and a butterfly that I never finished.

Posing. Well I think they pose basically all day but they're allowed to takes breaks at regular intervals. Most of them are professionals or highly trained and disciplined amatures.
They don't stay in that pose for too long I would imagine (I've never timed it otherwise I never be able to see as much as I possibly can
icon_wink.gif
) but whenever they feel the strain on their bodies they move to a different position, otherwise they'd get cramp or something like that. I think they change position every 3-5 minutes, as for itches if it were me I try to make it look like that was part of the act and have a quick scratch, but the atmosphere is generally very relaxed and nobody would really mind.
One of the statues painted his eyelids to make them look like real eyes, at first you didn't notice until he blinked

And your Ice Prince... Did you sneak a peek under his loin cloth...?

WHAT!?! and get frostbite?

No thanks.
He looked really spectacular standing on his pedastal, there was a lot more sparkle in the costume that the camera didn't catch. I felt drawn to him like a magpie. Must have been all that glitter...
I'll post a few more in a bit, I have to resize them quite a bit and that takes a fair amount of time. I have one I think you might enjoy

I remember when I was a kid, one of our local stores had teenaged girls standing in store-front windows, posing as mannequins... There was always a crowd of people standing on the sidewalk in front of the store, trying to figure out if they were real people or mannequins... We'd stand there until somebody blinked or drew a deep breath, and everyone would clap and laugh...

So much for entertainment back in the Sixties...

I remember that as well but always found it a little scary. Ah well, those were the days...

More info on the World Living Statues event. This year it will be held on august 26 and 27.

1. You need to be at least 16 years old to enter
2. You have to be either a professional living statue or you have to have won the 1st prize in a previous event as an amature
3. You have to present a new act or an act that hasn't been seen at this contest before
4. You have to perform at least 4 times during the event for at least 30 minutes at a time
5. You have to hand in a portfolio of your work as a living statue

I think it's a real shame the organizers of this event didn't put a little more effort into their site. Imagine what it could be like if they put up more pictures and translated it into English, French or German. It makes me feel so !oops!

Pics are aren't as good as I hoped when I took them. I was facing the sun at the time

An Angel....
