Unfortunately, the local populace is gradually tearing down all of these temples and shrines to make way for modern 'western' developments!

why on earth would they ever think of tearing down such beautiful things, especially when they could probably just build around them, like is done in so many other places in the world.

In a fact, those temples are supposed to have been the only stone buildings IN THE MIDDLE of a city made of wood.

Isn´t that Bagan? Myanmar is probably the less occidentalized country in the world... think of a radiant, sunny, Southern, bigger Nort Korea.
Tough choice: silent decay or preservation for touristic purposes. We are currently in the first case. People may know about Angkor, Borobudur, but Bagan ...?
Yes it is Bagan. I think that because there are around 2000 of these in a relatively small space, they figure they can afford to lose some of them. It is mainly the ones that are past restoration that they are demolishing, but they are also doing little to maintain the others. Guess they figure they have the larger sites to keep tourists happy - tourism being the main reason why they need the space for accomodation and facilities. I only came to know about this through a 'holiday' programme on TV - and now, so do thousands of other 'tourists'.

Ooh... Batmobile!
