The Big Hole of Kimberley, South Africa.
In 1871, a 83.50 carat (16.7 g) diamond was found on the slopes of Colesberg Kopje (hill), and led to the first diamond rush into the area. As miners arrived in their thousands, the hill disappeared, and became known as the Big Hole. Five big holes were dug into the earth.
The "Big Hole" covering 170 000 m², reached a depth of 1 097 m and yielded 3 tons of diamonds. The mine was closed in 1914, while three of the other holes closed down in 2005.

On 2 September 1882, Kimberley became the first town in the southern hemisphere to install electric street lighting.

Although my first 6 weeks of military service was done at an army base just outside Kimberley, I never got to see the Big Hole.
Sadly, I still have not.

A Voortrekker wagon.
The Voortrekkers (Afrikaner pioneers) in the 1830s and 1840s emigrated, in what is called the Great Trek, from the British controlled Cape Colony to areas north of the Orange River.

I see that we have run out of inspiration and are now having to post the ugliest buildings you can find. :D

The "duck" building epitomises everything that I hate about modern architecture.

So you must like funambulist. :D

I do NOW! Thanks for the introduction. My online dictionary gives tight rope walker as the first definition and one who is mentally agile as the second. So in answer to another thread I just saw here... funambulism is one of the things I most enjoy about JUB!!

looks like an edited pic of a Killer Whale jumping made to look like a shark.

Snow on Table Mountain is very rare......and when it does, it normally is only just a little and melts very quickly.
The building is part of the restaurant on the mountain.

WILD RIDE.....
Riding on one of these suburban trains during off-peak hours in Cape Town is not recommended.....you stand a good chance of being mugged, stabbed, and even thrown off!
I prefer my car :-)
