I cycle past this monument on my way to work and home everyday.
Locally it's known as De Berenkuil (Bear's Den). Officially it's called Airborne Plein (!oops! I have been living here so long I had to look that one up).
Every year on Memorial Day and Liberation Day on 4th/5th of May and the 14th of September wreaths are layed to commemorate WWII, Operation Market Garden & The Battle of Arnhem and those who fought in it.
The column used to be part of the Palace of Justice which was destroyed during the war.

Café Riche, Arnhem, used to be one of those cafés with a dark brown interior, brass ash trays and persian rugs on the tables, with lots of old folk drinking rather bad coffee before it closed it's doors 7-8 years ago. After that it was turned into an American style diner by Burger King. Since the BK moved into the temporary new station across the road it has been empty.
I don't miss the bad coffee but I do miss the former glory of them old days...
