buttons, thanks for the photos! This bottom one is my favorite so far! I don't know exactly what I was expecting the city to look like... but it's not at all as I had imagined it.

I didn't know what to expect either.

[STRIKE]It's a country of contrasts[/STRIKE] It's a city of contrasts and imagine the rest of China is like that in some way or other. It's a fast growing economy and when in Wuhan you get the feel that is on the verge of something tremendous. It's the 5th city by population but only the 10th economically and it has so many "problems" to sort out and yet when there you feel that the Wuhanese will succeed.
Tey have already taken steps to sort out the tremendous pollution in the city and no doubt they will take more. It's greenness surprised me, every street has rows of trees on either side no matter how dilapidated the houses are, scooters run on silent electric engines, the city centre is a traffic free zone (something they picked up in Arnhem), old people can be seen sweeping the streets and the highways and the railroad tracks and the streets are cleaner than here in spite of the spitting on the streets.
The Wuhanese are clean, I have seen them clean their shops and disco's and the pavement in front of their store. Littering is a big no-no.
And yet there is squalor and grime and poverty and a pervasive smell right beside or just behind the chrome and glass, steel and concrete of modernity.

The side entrance to the block of flats at the back of the hotel I was staying in, the contrast between the high rise modern buildings and flats like these is immense, it's almost like each of these old flats is an enclosure, like the old world is supposed to be locked away/kept out of sight in some manner.

attachment.php

A lot of flats like these had balconies that had bars or blue perspex on them, which I thought was funny as a lot of the busses that drive around had the same blue perspex or bars on them as well.

I love the telephone cells, they were everywhere.

Imagine walking through neighbourhoods like these in the company of 5 women and a man with long blond hair, 3 of the girls at least 6 feet tall and blond, one of with purple and black spiky hair. You have no idea how people just stopped and stared or came out of their shops to see the circus that had come to town.

LOL! I wonder if there's a board somewhere in cyber-China, where there are pictures of you and your associates posted!! :p

I'm loving the pictures!! :=D:

Just by chance I happened to notice we were in the area I had seen from my hotel room. Sadly the gate was locked so I couldn't get any nearer to the pagoda's. We were actually trespassing on the grounds of some local military or police training academy. When we walked back through the gates we were greeted by a large group of Chinese students in uniform who came out to see what was going on.

On the front of the street new modern buildings were being built and directly behind them the old communist flats: small, cramped and in need of tlc.

Buttons ... greatly appreciating your pics and insights! Got any of "the crew", and you? I'd come out to see "the circus" myself, too! :D

And, JD ... where in "Oz" is that? I'm surprised I haven't seen that stretch of bridge, along the coast, on "Modern Marvels"! ..|

I have Ky, but I am not posting them here. I might put them in my gallery eventually or post them on my blog.

A friendly and benign wave from Mao Zedong who's statue can be found in front of one of the government buildings spread throughout the city. This was taken on JieFang Dadou, not far from the Fu Mart shopping mall.

Let's pop into the Fu Mart and do some shopping ;)
So far from what I've seen of supermarkets and shopping malls in Wuhan is that you go all the way up to the 2nd or 3rd floor where you can but clothes, electronics, household items, etc before taking the escalator down to shop for food on the 2nd floor. the first floor has boutiques, and for some reason mainly shoe shops So let's start up top...

The 3rd floor of the Fu Mart is like Walmart, it even smells the same. There's that pervasive smell of plastic that follows you everywhere...

I bought myself some red undies. Great value for money at less that $1,50 a pair. Most if not all underwear has caucasian models on the labels. I later learned that even in China pale/whitish skin was considered an attractive feature.

While browsing through the undies I couldn't help but notice some of the brandnames and writing on the packaging on the XXL and XXXL and XXXXL and even XXXXXL sizes.

Not a bad slogan by Easco Feel at home: "Easiness. The feeling. So soft. And Pretty"

Jinfenglian is even better, they offer "Comfort and Seduction"

And the Dobie Keyese tops it with Fatty undies telling you to "Be Simple, Be Enjoyable"

" Wonder if the pagodas are actually above ground missile silos? Probably not... if they had been you'd still be in China... making red underwear for the next 25 years!! :p

The pictures of the buildings are great! Now we know where Stalinist architecture went to die! ;)

The old water pumping station in my home town was built in 1899. Its now an art museum.
