The politics were ridiculous. Britain's monarch decided to mobilize for domestic political reasons, counting on his cousin the Tsar in Russia to not mobilize, but the Tsar decided that if his royal cousin in Britain had mobilized, he should follow suit....
So millions died.
In a way the Great War was the ultimate monument to Otto von Bismarck, Prussia's master under the Kaiser: the international system which went awry, leading to that war, was his work, a system of balances that was supposed to make sure such a war never happened -- but without himself around to tweak it, the system ended up eating itself.
