Just got my nipple pierced

Ibuprofen for swelling and pain relief. If it continues to hurt badly for more than a few days, I would seek medical care.

I agree, take ibuprofen.
It's going to be REALLY tender though for about month or so, so just be careful.

Make sure your wash isn't something that inhibits new cell growth. Avoid peroxide, rubbing alcohol, etc.

Tea tree oil soap is good.

if thine nipple offends thee

PLUCK it off

Before coming anywhere near your new piercing, wash your hands with antibacterial soap! You may wash around the piercing with an antibacterial soap such as Satin or Provon, available at many drug stores. Do not use Ivory, Dial, etc to wash the piercing. If some happens to get on the piercing while showering, that's fine just rinse it off. Do not work soap into the piercing! All soaps are for external use only and your piercing is not external.

Sea salt water soaks, twice a day, 10m each. 1/4 tsp sea salt to 1 C hot water (as hot as you can comfortably stand). Additional 1m soaks occasionally throughout the day can help too. Do not use regular table salt! Sea salt soaks help stimulate blood flow to the area and draws secretions and bacteria out of the piercing.

As others have already stated, Ibuprofen if the pain is bad. As looseliam said, avoid peroxide and alcohol. Both are extremely harsh; peroxide is damaging to the new skin cells forming and alcohol is extremely drying which inhibits the growth of new tissue.

Don't rotate the jewelry, unless you notice it sticking to the skin. Playing with the jewelry usually creates more problems.

Do not use Ivory, Dial, etc to wash the piercing.

Why shouldn't I use dial? The place that pierced it gave me a bottle of dial to wash it with.

I got it pierced around 12:30 and took 2 Aleve at 1:00. The pain persisted until I took 1 Ibuprofin around 2. The pain went away within 15 minutes.

The pain wasn't bad, it was just a constant sting that was really annoying.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. I'll try to take some pics when the swelling goes down a little!

I agree with both circuitboi70, and AndrewH, it is what my piercer told me to do. Sea salt soaks twice a day. Don't play with them, and it will take up to 6 months or more to fully heal. Waht was not mentioned that happened to me, was that little hard crusties aould form around the hole and on the metal ring, so would scratch the inside of the holes. So I needed to soak in sea salt, then most of the time I had to pick them off. Still need to every now and then, even after over a year of being pierced!
It is well worth the effort, I like mine every much, and am glad I got it done! Happy healing!!

I've always been told that soaps are irritating to new piercings, but if you must use soap at least use a liquid soap as it is uncontaminated from previous uses. (Bar soap...icky).

Today has been a lot better! I almost forgot when it was there. It has been a little sensitive this afternoon (only when I hit it changing clothes) but other than that I haven't felt it all day and I haven't taken any pain killers either.

I also did a salt water soak last night and again this morning and washed it in the shower with the Dial that the guy gave to me when I had it done.

Everything's great so far...knock on wood.
