Hey, everyone!

I have been lurking on the forum for quite some time, but I finally bit the bullet today and registered an account.

My situation may be a bit unique. I am a 23 year old American currently serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mozambique, Africa. I have been in-country for about a year and love it for the most part. One of the drawbacks, however, is the fact that I have very few options for expressing my sexuality. Mozambique is very hostile to the LGBT community, so coming out to my community is simply not an option. I can go over a month at a time without seeing another westerner. It gets lonely at times, especially now that I have to hide this very important part of me.

Anyways, I didn't come here to look for sympathy. Rather, I'd just like to use this site to chill and talk about things that I cant talk to anybody else about in my present circumstances.

Other than that, some of my hobbies and interests include politics, traveling the world, doing techie stuff, beach volleyball, running cross country and just hanging out with friends (hopefully I'll make a couple more here :-) )

Peace!

Hi! And Welcome! I came for the porn but I stayed because of the people I met, and the chance to interact with other people who were like me. How are you enjoying Maputo, apart from the hostility?

It has its ups and downs. I love the seafood, Portuguese culture, and the locals are great people for the most part! I could do without the humidity, unglodly heat and millions of mosquitoes, though. The work I do (malaria treatment and prevention) is rewarding but frustrating at the same time. I've got about a year left in my service, so I can stick it out.

It's a place I tell myself I'd like to visit since it's close by (I'm in South Africa) but I probably won't because it's difficult to plan anything with my friends. Did you pick Mozambique, or were you just sent there? It's good you find your work rewarding, or you'd be in the seventh circle of hell.

I didn't pick it. I had basic fluency in Portuguese going in, though, so I knew that there was a good chance that I would end up here, eventually.

Ah, you're from the rainbow nation, huh? That's cool. I've only been to Johannesburg (the airport) so far, but a friend and I are going to the Western Cape next month for some R&R. I'm so excited and looking forward to it!

If you do end up visiting, let me know. I know some cheap - but safe - places to stay. I mostly frequent backpackers and hostels because I cannot afford much on the stipend I receive.

I haven't been to Cape Town, but all of my friends who have say it's awesome.

Hello Frank and welcome to J U B  I hope you stick around and join in the forums and make some friends. Levisboner and I are friends here.

Welcome to JUB!

Jump right in and make yourself at home. Only one of us bites, and then not too often.

Welcome, Frank. I think will will make friends and have a good time here. I hope Blackbeltninja comes in to introduce himself. He is a South African who deals with malaria, too.
