Justin Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury and leader of the global Anglican church, has sought to mollify conservative bishops around the world by “affirming the validity” of a 1998 declaration that gay sex is a sin.

He told more than 650 bishops attending the once-a-decade Lambeth conference that, for “a large majority” of conservative Anglicans, questioning biblical teaching was “unthinkable”.

Welby said: “In many countries, [it] would make the church a victim of derision, contempt and even attack. For many churches, to change traditional teaching challenges their very existence.”

The last sentence is exactly why organisd religion should die

Lambeth is a disaster for the dying English Church this year.

I can't believe that it was even held.

In Canada, the Anglican Church has ceased to even exist in most communities...being considered largely irrelevant and exclusionary...the symbol of the worst acts of the colonial British.

As you say...can hardly wait until the organized churches are gone...except in their place are now evangelical, hard line, Christo fascist right wing mega churches that threaten to do even more damage than the old style mainstream religious sects.

I'm going to leave this world and go to one where [STRIKE]I can be with my children[/STRIKE] we spent the last century building nonprofit schools and hospitals instead of churches.

I have the sense that the "high church" Episcopal (that is, Anglican) church in the US is pretty gay in its orientation, leading to breakaway congregations and the departure of priests to the Roman Catholics, who are happy to welcome them, even to the extent of (re-) ordaining married formerly Episcopal priests.

I've read that the Anglican church is strongest--and most conservative--in Africa. Welby statement should be viewed in this light.

After some controversy (I don't know what it was about), the (female Korean-American) director of the Episcopal church in my neighborhood left, and the congregation is currently looking for a replacement. The deacon is described as follows:

"She is a practitioner of spiritual development through Stillpoint, a community for inclusive individual and group spiritual direction. With an academic background in Music Therapy & Theatre at Colorado State..."

I suppose the best you can say is that at least they corrupt and abuse in plain sight. As opposed to the current lot of anglicans and catholics who did it all by stealth

It's all dangerous, cultish bullshit

I'd rather hear it from the church as their bullshit is expected and just that - bullshit - rather than other pious religious gay men. I expect it from the church - I HATE IT when I run across gay men who preach that same shit and wag their nasty fingers at everyone. UGH ](*,)

@LeicsDom "Dangerous cultish bullshit."

Which is to say that were the Anglican Communion to change its definition you still wouldn't be interested in attending services or supporting your local churches. I'm sure this applies to most gay men and probably to most modern Brits. So why, I wonder, should the Anglican church strive to please those who think of organized (or at least organized Christian) religion as at best an anachronism, at worst a malign influence on individuals and the nation?

Not all organized religion - I am OK with Buddhism and Wiccan and a few others. I am NOT OK with the Christians BUT I don't care what other gay men believe as long as long as they keep the gospel to themselves - maybe they can win some of them over.

For Christ's sake it's only the Archbishop of Canterbury talking to a load of vicars and prebends and rectors and deacons and curates and consistories and sextons and transepts and sacristies and blah blah blah. Nobody's listening. Nationally, let alone globally, it's about as relevant as the secretary of a suburban golf club telling members they won't be allowed in the lounge bar unless they're wearing a tie.

Same-sex marriage, women bishops, gay priests ... W the actual F!

It is not malign. It is cancerous and very dangerous

Ladyboys and Genitalmen, the day of reckoning has come. His Holymolyness the Archbishop of Cadbury's has handed in his badge to his Maj after admitting failing to act on a child abuse scandal which he'd known about for nine years. To add a bit of spice to the occasion the BBC News YouTube channel has left the comments section open, which is asking for trouble. Connoisseurs of shitstorms will want to get the popcorn in the microwave. There should be hours of entertainment.

In the youtube comments, none of which are lacking in contempt for his godliness, are some that put the blame on too much wokeness.
There are lots of criticisms which may be made of the church, lots and lots, but too woke! too woke?
