I can relate to Hole (my favorite song by her EVER), some of the lyrics in Don't Waste Your Time, I want what Kelly wants in Be Still, Maybe (I'm strong, but my life isn't easy and I'm not easy to figure out either), How I Feel has its moments too: I feel that these days I'm just not going to find someone to settle down with...

Yeah is just plain awesome, I don't really relate too it too much, but it's a great song!

And that's pretty much it.

All the songs are pretty decent but I can relate to Hole the most.

Anyone else really digging/relating to the CD?
 
I liked the first single, but never listened to the rest.
 
She's working on a new album right now and it will be released in 2008. She's succumbed to pressure from her label and is trying to make Clive Davis happy.

Was kinda fun.

from what I understand the album is going to tank because the label isn't promoting it because they'd rather she turned out shit like Whitney Houston ruined her career with.
 
Her first album was cookie-cutter pop, but at least was mildly enjoyable.

Her second album was cooler, even if it was still in the pop realm. A lot more interesting.

This album...enh. I understand what she's trying to do - she wants to branch out, break out of the pop bubble. Cool, I'm all for it. She wants to "rock". Fine, go for it. But I don't find the album interesting. She cranked the guitars up, fine, but she also left the hooks out, as if to further divorce herself from her pop past. Someone needed to mention that all the best rock music DOES have hooks.

The album isn't selling all that well. And yes, the label isn't promoting it. Not because she didn't "churn out Whitney crap", but because she went to the public with her complaints about the label and Clive Davis. Yes, they argued that the album wasn't commercial enough (which I sort of agree with), but they DID let her have her way, and they DID put the album out the way she wanted it.

I think she thought she was popular enough that her name would carry the album along. And it isn't. She has sold about 250,000 copies - and that's pretty impressive considering the lack of promotional push. But each week, the album sells less than half of what it did the previous week. People have short attention spans, and she's gonna need "the machine" to keep her front of mind. And after she went public with her complaints, the label probably thought, "Well, screw it, why should we help her out?" Kelly obviously has noticed the sales figures - she's publicly apologized to Clive AND the label. We'll see if they're willing to play.

I'm not sure it's all childish behavior, although part of it is. I don't have figures here, but I believe at least 95% of albums don't turn a profit. The labels stay in business thanks to those other 5%. Thus they have to choose VERY carefully which ones to push. They don't want to spend a lot of time and money promoting something unless they're pretty sure they're going to get it back in sales.

And I think that's the problem with this album. It doesn't sound like something that would appeal to pop fans, really (and even if it did, I think that's precisely what Kelly Clarkson DOESN'T want). It doesn't sound like it'd go over with the modern rock crowd really well, either. So who would be most interested in this album? Kelly Clarkson fans, obviously, but they're pretty much a given. It takes very little promotion to remind KC fans that the "album is now available". They'll go buy it any case. But who else? The only group I can think of is in the 13- to 18-year-old age range. People looking to expand past the pop field, and could use a "pop-meets-rock" album to help move them along. But for one thing, I'm not sure this is an album that would compel kids to explore beyond it - it'd have to be a REALLY good album for that, and I don't think it is. And for another, is that demographic big enough to warrant a specific commercial push?

Perhaps the songs Clive offered WERE awful. That wouldn't surprise me. But it's disappointing that both sides clung to their side without seeing that there was an alternate solution. To wit, bring in somebody else. A songwriter/producer (either one person, or a team) with a proven track record in the rock scene, but who still has a knack for the pop hooks. I don't know if Glen Ballard would be the right guy, but hell, he took Alanis Morrisette from Tiffany-wannabe to spokesmodel of the female alt-rock scene in one album. :) I'd like to see Kelly paired up with somebody who could do the same for her. Maybe album #4 can be that album.

However, I am curious; how many stars out of 5 would you give this CD, Lex?
 
I hated the album at first. I still think its not as good as it could have been. But it grew on me enough to say I like it.
 
Sorry - just checked the sales data. 463,000 in the United States as of the end of last week. So your total was closer.

Two-and-a-half, maybe three. There certainly isn't anything wrong with it. But like I said, nothing really stuck. I've got thousands of CDs here. I need a reason to dig a CD out and listen to it. I don't think I would've even given it a second glance had her name not been on it.

Kelly's music has always been the type that grows on me.

As for her acting bratty I don't think taking charge of your own career is being bratty. She trusted the AI machine and look what they did to her.... "From Justin To Kelly" anyone? The fact she's even taken remotely serious after that is a miracle. When I hear her speak I respect her. She seems to genuinely want to be an actual artist not just a famous person and even if you don't think her music is as good now (which you're perfectly entitled to believe) I don't think originality is something that should be frowned on or discouraged.

And I'm under the impression she didn't take her complaints to public. There were studio leaks and when she was asked about it she didn't go the Paris/Lohan/Brittney route of saying "who me? no! Everythings perfect in my world" when it blatantly wasn't. She was honest. Gold star to Kelly.

Yeah, I'm having trouble believing this myself. She fought hard to have her album released in the form she wanted, the label finally said OK...and then, roughly a month after it came out, she's gone back with her tail between her legs to record a more "pop" one? It's one thing to decide to reconcile with the label, but why immediately rush into recording another album? Even if they rush things, it won't be out until the spring. Even the label would probably prefer she continue doing promotion for the current LP. Yes, she scrapped her tour, but she could still do sporadic concert appearances, TV, that sort of thing.

I hate Clive!! Kellys album is expected to just sell about 850k here in the US, thats unbelievable. This album is by far her best album, I even go as far to say the best album this year, but im biased, lol. The album never got a chance since all this negative media surrounded Kelly and the album. If RCA had since the beginning suppoerted the album, I think it would be a very different story.

About her new album which she is already recording, im not gonna judge yet. She wrote many songs on "Breakaway" so Im hoping they dont completely cut her off from writing her own music, shes a very talented songwriter. I dont mind another pop album, because it wont be bubble gum pop, itll be rock/pop which Kelly does amazingly. I feel bad for Kelly cause she really loved this new album and ppl arent buying it. But Kelly is amazing either way. Im happy that we will get another album so soon though. Said its not what Kelly might want but good for fans.
 
the whole breakaway album was amazing , her new one is very for lack of a better word boring.
