Knoppinx on USB flash drive?

i was trying to put knoppix on my USB flash drive. I followed the instructions here: http://www.howudune.com/knoppix.php

because they seemed easy and straight forward. I have an Intel D865PERL motherboard , 2.70 Ghz chip, 2 gb of memory, win xp pro, and a PNY 1 Gb USB flash drive. I've followed the instructions 3 times and they appear to work just fine. But when i reboot...i get a black screen for a few seconds and then it goes back to windows. I've enabled USB boot and the light on the drive pops on for those few seconds when the screen is black, but nothing.

i know thats not a great discription but it's all i can think of. I'll try the usb drive on my computer at work tomorrow to see if it's just my computer. But other than that i don't know what to try.

lol well i didn't get knoppix 5 yet. i did download the ISO though. i formated the usb drive with that utility you mentioned (although the link was broken) ;) but i found it on their web site. so i formated the USB drive with that and then followed the instructions on the web site i mentioned in post 1 here: http://www.howudune.com/knoppix.php

i'll have to try and burn the ISO file for v5 tomorrow and see if i can get that onto my USB drive. ;) i've got a three day weekend with monday being a holiday so i plan on playing with version 5 this weekend ;)
 
hey t, let me know if you have any luck with v 5. i burnt it to a CD and it hangs on boot up. i'm going to try to use another cd just in case the burn didn't work. it hangs at "udev hot-plug hardware detection."

any ideas? i'm googling as we "speak." ;)
 
i tried another cd, no luck. i will try and download the ISO of the DVD and burn that to a DVD and see if i have better luck with that. Could be that the ISO didn't download right and that maybe the problem. It sounds soooo cool though! i'm jealous. I have 2 gb of ram so i'll try loading it all to ram also...if i get it to work that is ;)
 
I reburnt the CD. when i tried testcd, one file failed. So i reburnt and did the noudev option and here i am typing from knoppix v5. =) so far the only thing that doesn't work is my TV tuner. =)
 
ohhh i didnt know i could custoimize the isolinux file, that would be better than typing stuff in every freaking time. a more automated process. ;) i did mess with it the other day to get it to install to the usb drive so i know what your talking about. i didn't download the DVD iso yet....it was going to take 7 hours and i meant to start it last night before bed, then forgot. :( oh well. tonight! lol. i'm not sure why the tv tuner card isn't working. it works in knoppix 4. i have to tell it which brand it is, but it works. i tried that with 5 last night but no go. i'll keep messing with it. i've got that book "hacking knoppix" which is truely excellent for a newb.

i was trying to mess with wine last night in 5 but didn't have much luck. i need to refer to my book. lol.

/\ lol i saw it yesterday in that magazine at barnes and nobel! they had it for 9.99 though! ;)

i might pick it up later this week. i decided i had spent enough money for the day (i got world of warcraft). ;)

/\ lol yeah i can see that. i dont know what i'm doing though. it's not a much like warcraft I, II or III. my spells keep running out for some reason...don't know whats up with that.
 
your spells run out *confused* but if you play it for a while you will see all the wc3 and diablo connections :)
 
ok i was some how losing some of my spells from my task bar thingy i think i was clicking and dragging them off some how. they are all back, plus a couple i hadn't seen. :lol:

I'm a nightelf druid level 8. some gal at work said she was an undead something level 58. apparently her and her husband play. lol they are in a guild or something.

so how is your knoppix running :o ?
 
i shall take your advise and try the live version of kubunto! then see how i like that ;) thanks for the info!

and thanks for mentioning again about the suduo installer i'd forgotten you mentioned it above.
 
after being reminded that i forgot to try kubuntu. I downloaded the CD iso tonight and burnt it to a cd. unfortunately it doesn't load from the live cd (which i didn't really think it would since unbuntu doesn't either). i get past the boot menu (which i don't in unbuntu), but after it a few minutes i get a string of i/o errors, they were something like (not exact here): I/O Error while reading to the logical drive hdd at logical block bla bla bla. i get the string of errors like 10-11 times and i finally just had to reboot. oh well...bugger it. i like knoppix still :)
