Next wednesday in France : "La Môme" (US title : "La Vie en Rose"), the life story of singer Edith Piaf...

Somebody told me she was an icon everywhere in the World, so I thought you should know...

I can't wait to watch it... I'm a big fan of Edith Piaf (and Marion Cotillard, who played in "A very long engagement" and "A good year"...

I'll let you know... ;)

I like Grace's version too, but this is the original...

Edith Piaf - La Vie En Rose - 1954

And my fav one :

Same one in english (tv screens used to be so weird in that era... she had not such a big head... ) :

... one of the greatest love songs ever...

Hi Coco ! I grew up on Piaf recordings and have loved her ever since. Some years ago I was fortunate enough to work on a stage production of Piaf: Her Life & Loves with the remarkable Vancouver chanteuse Joelle Rabu and consider it a highlight. So is this film a new documentary about her, or ... ?

Not a documentary : a movie, directed by Olivier Dahan, with a very good french cast (Marion Cotillard, Gérard Depardieu,...)

Some pics and videos there :

Her nickname "la Môme Piaf" means "The Sparrow Kid" (in english, that sounds like a super hero nickname, but in french, it's cute... )

More about her life : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Édith_Piaf

Thanks Coco! Anytime one of these threads come up I have to post Patti's version...heartbreaking!

When i saw this movie title I thought about another french film called "Ma Vie En Rose"

I know that film too : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119590/

"Ludovic is a young boy who can't wait to grow up to be a woman. When his family discovers the little girl blossoming in him they are forced to contend with their own discomfort and the lack of understanding from their new neighbors. Their anger and impatience cave and Ludovic is sent to see a psychiatrist in the hopes of fixing whatever is wrong with him. A movie that addresses trans-gender and gender issues in general through the eyes of a child."

... no link with the present one, but a very good, beautyful and tuching movie... and Michèle Laroque is one of my favorite actress (she played in "Pédale Douce", the movie in witch I found the text of my signature).

ahotjock71, this clip was awesome : it's a GREAT version of the song, thanks...

OK... I saw the movie, and now, I can say it's one of the strongest and saddest story ever filmed... I cried all the tears of my poor little heart...

Edith Piaf's life was so intense, full of both brightness and darkness, full of love and friendship, but broken by alcohol, drugs, pains, death, sickness... :( :( :(

Watch the movie, you'll understand why she used to sing so many sad and deep songs, with her wonderful voice.

The same actress (Marion Cotillard) plays the character from the age of 20 still she died in 1963.... She was only 48 when she died, but she looked 75...

If you need another kind of motivation to watch this film, have a look on the cast... Jean-Pierre Martins, the guy who plays Marcel Cerdan (the man she loved most of all) is absolutely gorgeous... :D

My parents didn't have a lot of records when I was growing up, but one of them was an Edith Piaf record. I played it a lot. I really love her stuff. Well, except for "Bravo Pour le Clown". That one manages to be annoying AND creepy. :)

What an amazing life, eh? Great film too. I've looked her since I was about six, my parents probably should have realized something was up when their little boy starting doing Piaf impersonations.

:rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

... at least, it was less "cliché" than a Streisand or a Minelli !!! ;)

I heard this wonderful movie was on screen in US since june, 8.... it's time to bump this old thread... did anyone saw it ?...

i think it was released in nyc and la only this past weekend. other markets to follow :(

I Just Bought A CD (The Best Of Edith Piaf) - And I Have Been Playing It Over And Over. A French Judy Garland - Or Was Judy An American Edith Piaf? Both Had A Life Of Heartbreak And Addiction. A Common Theme It Seems To Extraordinary Talent.

I've got this kind of cd too... a ton of great songs, really...

I "wikipedied" both Piaf and Garland : they started being famous mostly the same year (1934/1935), so...

I can't wait for the dvd of the film... I read the critics were very good, in US ?...
