Seems like Katy Perry takes this battle

Roar - #2 Hot 100, 557,000 sold
Applause - #6 Hot 100, 218,000 sold

All that proves is the majority of people have basic taste, Katy Perry can't sing to save her life. Just terrible.
Taste aside, I think Katy Perry's skills (or lack of?) as a vocalist work to her favor. She's a great studio artist and she makes really nice sing-along karoke-type 'anthems'/songs (which is basically what Roar is). She's not a true vocalist though, because her voice is just average at best (in my opinion). But that's what makes her relate-able to her target audience (teen girls mostly). It's almost like - would you rather try to sing along to a Katy Perry/Taylor Swift song or to a Celine Dion/Mariah Carey song? I think that's part of the reason they do so well, lol.

People sing circles around her easily.

But to attribute a song's success to people having bad taste falls under the category of being obnoxious. It's like being a food critic and telling people what they should and shouldn't be eating because what you think tastes good should taste good to everyone else. It doesn't work like that. Some people like calamari, others prefer chip n dip. (*8*)

So is Lady Gaga a major contributor to the dumbing of gay America?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/larry-womack/lady-gaga-warhol_b_3758545.html

First, the article is wrong about the drag queens not knowing she was filming, or even appearing - Shangela, for instance, knew from the very start.

Second, sorry, but buying into Lady Gaga as "smart, elegant art as derived from the houses of Warhol and etc" is just clever fluffy marketing, and nothing more. If you want true avant-garde, true "thinkers" in music that are LGBT, you wouldn't be looking to Gaga after Born This Way.

But third, and most importantly, I do NOT believe that Lady Gaga is the catalyst dumbing down gay Americana - we've been doing a damn good job of that before Gaga and her Monsters even appeared or have relevance. There aren't many "smart" outlets for gay youth anymore - no one is interested in the art of reading or throwing shade, but everyone wants to pretend they know how to do it right. No one wants history, they want fashion and to be the star of the show. There is no more confidence behind the hollow cocky facade... and the tongue-in-cheek art that used to be found in music is drying up. She's no different, therefore, besides the devotion and the naming of her fans(also not unique), she can't bear the total brunt of the blame.

Nah, the problem with Applause is that it sounds dated, and isn't single-worthy. It's a fine track, but it fills the dance niche and doesn't have mass appeal (aka Katy Perry's vapid shit). I fully expect another single sometime in September/October.

I honestly don't see the big deal with whether people like Lady Gaga or don't, or they like Katy Perry or don't. If people enjoy the music great, if they don't, then they don't and can find another artist they do like. I don't really get the point of harping on who is better by talent or sales, it is all subjective. If we're going to go by sales figures then every band that doesn't sell singles like that sucks or doesn't make as good as music as either of them and that is simply not true.

No ones taste is any better than anyone elses in this thread, we all just like different artists but all those artists that we enjoy most likely gives us the same kick we all get out of what we like, so it doesn't really matter. No matter the genre, music is a lot of fun, seems pointless to argue over it.

It's all her fault. If she had waited one more week then it would not have been that much of a big deal.

But she wanted to upstage Katy Perry and it backfired and now she is humiliated.

Oh, come on CB, don't be daft...from the timing of the Twitter posts it's pretty obvious Gaga wanted the jump on Perry. And I don't care for Perry at all, but I'll admit that. We should take the term 'leaked' very lightly these days.

Kinda like opening a Lady Gaga thread to find post after post about Katy Perry.
It's actually expected to see an artist being compared to another artist when you open their thread. I actually don't like Roar. I don't really like Applause either, but I think it's better than Roar. Applause has weak sauce verses but an awesome chorus. Lady GaGa's done much better (lyrically) than Applause with her previous releases.

But the logic of "people have bad taste so Katy Perry's song did better" is just weak tea, sis (*8*)

Re-read my post sis, Nowhere did I say 'bad', I said 'BASIC' there's a difference. Basic as is ordinary, mainstream, average. Katy Perry appeals to a wider range of people, whereas Gaga separates herself and tries hard to associate herself with being 'queer'. Most people have basic taste, for Gaga to be as successful as she is with the crazy shit she wears and does is quite impressive. Her talent shines through her wacky ascetic, IMO.
Oh, you're right. I did misread

Sorry sis

(*8*)

I still think it's weird to imply that most people have basic taste. But I guess I'm weird that way.

The artwork for Applause is clearly an ode to LEGENDTINA anyway.

Rehearsing a new song called Manicure for the itunes festival. I'm digging this side of her.

Her body looks terrible for someone her age. All that money you'd think she could have a better plastic surgeon. Looks like her "hip replacement" and nose job included fattening those thighs and hips.

I just hope she puts out more tracks like Disco Heaven. That has to be my favorite song by her

Song sounds good but the audio on that clip sounds like shit. Was at work today and it doesn't look like the performance is up on itunes yet. :/

^ I really love the sound of it so far. She's performing a concert today, six new songs. I couldn't be bothered to look up the live stream, but I hope it'll be on youtube soon.

Yes, I've seen the whole gig and she did great. "Sex Dreams" really is a great song and hopefully she'll make it a single, not sure if it's not too controversial though.(?)
