Re: The Official LADY GAGA Mega-thread

Born This Way has hit #1 in the official charts of 26 countries!

I'd love to see what the "she's already peaked" people have to say now. This one hit wonder sure has lasted for quite a lot. See you in 10 years :)

:gogirl:

Yay

Re: The Official LADY GAGA Mega-thread

Gurl, what you say???

She sold 1,108,000 NOT 668,000 of her album on the US ALONE.

Amazon paid full prize to her label on those 99c sales. It's not her fault Amazon think she is the PREMIER SUPERSTAR that warrants them to lose that cash just to get the caché of the association of her name to theirs.....

Besides, did Taylor Swift sold 2,000,000 + copies of her album Worldwide??? Or has she gotten a Hot100 #1 single in the US yet????

Thought so....

LOL...Just be happy she sold 668,000 copies of her album. Its double what her company expected.

All her "little monsters" did not buy the album..so what. It was not a massive first week like all of you wanted. Its still a major hit.

Remember Amazon is a corporation and not a "fan", so to count their units is just sad and it makes her fan base look desperate which they have no reason to be at all.

p.s. I don't really follow Taylor but her selling 1m+ in the US alone makes me think she has sold over 2m of her new cd worldwide.

country music is really only popular in the US.

It's beyond me why people keep answering his desperate attempts to get some attention. He clearly doesn't understand, or rather, chooses not to understand.

His arguments are pathetic and deplorable, they aren't worth being addressed. So, now, can we all move on?

Lady Gaga Producer on the Making of 'Born This Way'

fernando-garibay-mic-a-l.jpg

It was Interscope Geffen A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine who first played matchmaker between Lady Gaga and producer Fernando Garibay four years ago. “Jimmy was, like, ‘Just meet with her and see what happens,’” recalls the Mexico-raised Garibay, now Gaga’s official musical director on her albums and beyond. Then 21, she arrived at what he describes as “the ghetto of Hollywood” in a two-piece and fishnets, they hit it off, a friendship flourished and the rest is history.

On Wednesday, Gaga is expected to have the biggest debut of 2011 with Born This Way, which is on track to sell over a million copies, almost sure to best Taylor Swift’s 2010 bow Speak Now, which moved 1,047,000 in its first week. It’s a triumph for her label Interscope, the Gaga team, which includes manager Troy Carter, A&R executive Vincent Herbert, creative director Laurieann Gibson and, of course, Iovine, who envisioned her place in pop culture long before "little monsters," the meat dress or egg vessel entered the public consciousness.

But perhaps it’s most gratifying for Garibay, who pieced together the record practically in motion, while accompanying Gaga on her massive worldwide tour. How did they do it? Garibay provided an intimate look at the Gaga process days after Born This Way’s May 23 release...

Exactly!

Taylor's 'Speak Now' album was sold for 3.99 it's ENTIRE debut WEEK, so I wonder how much did she sell in "reality" then?

Anyway, moving the fuck on...

Re: The Official LADY GAGA Mega-thread

THR: She’s credited as a co-writer on most songs from Born This Way, what percentage of the songwriting would you say she’s responsible for?

Garibay: She doesn't need anyone to write a hit song. A lot of times, it’s 100% her. She's generous enough to give the producers who worked on this album a percentage of the songwriting for the production and whatever contributions we gave in arrangement or a few lyrical suggestions here and there.

THR: What kind of steps were taken to avoid a leak of the record as it was in progress?

Garibay: Extreme steps. We were on the road for a year and two months, so there were so many hack attempts to our email accounts, our Twitter accounts, our Facebook accounts, everything around us. We were targets. So what we did was make sure all our computers were offline all the time -- none of our work computers were online at any time. And we were very careful about where we left our hard drives and storage devices. They pretty much never left our sight.

It's unfair for one of your sketches to be released when it's just a sketch. To do it justice is to release a complete piece of art. So under those guidelines, we were really cautious about how we created this album, like how we couldn't sacrifice creativity, and we wouldn't sacrifice security, either … It's funny because now being off the tour, I should feel lighter because I'm used to carrying all my stuff with me. It’s like carrying a wallet, it became such a part of us.

THR: What was the process of editing all these disparate parts together?

Garibay: For every song, we averaged about 50 versions on the high side, because she was that much of a perfectionist. She wanted to give the best product possible to her fans. I would compare it to working on five albums at once. It was so much work, I didn’t sleep for a month, I would just take naps. And when she wasn't happy with any of the versions and she wanted to start over, I had to be the one to do it. It happened quite a few times -- it had to go through all those versions to evolve into the final product. Because in her head, it's like, "I want to hear the full rock version, I want to hear the full dance version, I want to hear the full techno version, I want to hear the full New Wave version." And once she hears and sees all the colors that she's working with, she can finally help paint that final picture. That's how it works. You can't get to the final point in her head without sketching each individual painting or trying each individual color. That way you know what the possibilities are.

THR: A lot has been written of the mobile recording units you used while Gaga was on the road, how many set-ups did you have and how did you maintain consistency?

Fernando Garibay: Basically, she's constantly working, so we have to keep up. If she has an idea, we need to be there to capture those moments, so we had every setup possible — we had laptops where we could go backstage and record something on the spot and we had a bigger set up in the studio bus. When we needed to isolate vocals, we’d record in there, it felt more quiet. Then eventually when we actually made a stop somewhere for several days, we'd go into a real studio and flesh out these ideas. It reminded me of those documentaries with mega bands from the '70s like Pink Floyd, who would record in these big studio sessions. It felt like that. It felt like we were creating something really special.

THR: Vocals in echo-prone rooms backstage hardly seems like an ideal recording situation…

Garibay: Her voice is so powerful, you can pretty much capture it with anything, whether a laptop or a mic. It's funny, even vocals recorded off her laptop with the GarageBand mic we ended up using on the album. Sometimes we sacrifice quality for performance because there's a magic moment where the vocal sounds just right. We worked very hard at repairing anything that needed to be repaired sonically.

THR: Can you tell us a bit about how Mutt Lange got involved in the ballad “You and I?”

Garibay: It was near the end of the album and we were on such a time deadline. But she was so busy starting to promote the album, the concerts, still being on tour, doing press, it was insane, so she literally had to record the vocal with a piano live backstage. We sent whatever parts we had to Mutt Lange and there was no time for her to fly out or anything like that. I remember Mutt writing us back and saying, "The vocal's perfect." Considering Mutt Lange is one of the best vocal producers on the planet…

THR: You hold a staff position at Interscope, how does that work and are you producing other artists?

Garibay: I am in-house at Interscope and she's my priority. It's like this: once you work with someone like Lady Gaga, it's hard to come off that. First of all, I love her so much, but also, what else could I do that would fulfill me as much as working with her? Not much right now. So I want to focus on the DJ aspect of things, and working on some music that I always wanted to do.

THR: And how did you come to take on the title of Gaga’s musical director?

Garibay: She needed someone that could oversee, who was kind of like an A&R but more about implementing exactly what needs to happen -- whether it involved writing a song with her, to produce a record with her, or just to make sure the vocals are done right. She just came up with the whole musical director thing, and I was, like, "Cool, you want to make me responsible for the biggest artist on the planet and turn this record in, right? That's what you're asking me to do?" What an honor. We made it work. We finished.

THR: Are there other songs you think should be released as singles?

Garibay: I'm really proud of "Marry the Night," and I hope that gets its single time.

YES YES YES

Re: What's your favorite Lady Gaga video?

Oh by far, it's Alejandro! The opening with the marching @0:29 and Gaga sitting in the tower with the pipe watching the dancers below @2:29 alone slayed me the day it debuted.

And The Queen agrees with me.
‘It's funny because I know a lot of kids on the Popjustice forum didn't like the Alejandro video, but that was my favourite of all my videos. It's not busy. But maybe that's my own monster.’

Here are 3 images that are seared into my brain I just screencapped!

^LOVED her makeup (or lack thereof) in this sequence!

^LOVED this part too with the dancers strutting.

The only thing I didn't like, was her makeup in the setup below...

^Too "normal" looking...

And I thought the bar scene below was too long...

Other than that, it's one of the greatest videos ever, imo.

Re: The Official LADY GAGA Mega-thread

Second US week sales: 174,000, down 84% from last week.

Ow. >_>

Re: The Official LADY GAGA Mega-thread

No album sells that many copies in it's first week without a huge drop afterwards. I thought it would be a lot worse, actually. Something around 100,000 copies.

It's still #1 on Billboard so it's all good :)

Re: What's your favorite Lady Gaga video?

My fave still is Judas, Bad Romance second and Paparazzi + Alejandro third.

Re: The Official LADY GAGA Mega-thread

If you all wan t to live in your little fantasy world in which she sold the 1m+ then go ahead and have fun.

p.s. About this whole Taylor Swift thing...I'm just going to post this and walk away ;)

The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, with first week sales of 1,047,000 copies in the United States.

After its massive debut, the album remained at the top in the United States for another week, selling 320,000 copies, down 69%.

Re: The Official LADY GAGA Mega-thread

Oh 2008. It's amazing how much she's accomplished in just 3 years!

Re: The Official LADY GAGA Mega-thread

Thank You for proving my point ;)

You can not compare Taylors Target deal with the endless cross promotion that Gaga has had with all those companies. Taylor had one major campaign while Gaga had how many again???

If you want you can subract the Amazon deal of $4 as well if it makes you feel better....hehe .99 cents is still super funny :)

So in your own words Gaga is a WORLDWIDE superstar and has one of the top money making tour EVER but she could not outsell a Country singer only known in the USA and maybe Canada....is that correct???

So your feelings won't get hurt I'm going to count her dollar sales...so she beat Taylor by more than 50,000 copies....wow poor Taylor got crushed...lol

So it was not the record breaking sales that all her fans were going on and on about for months before the release, just be happy she sold around 668,000 units its first week, which is above the 400,000 it was estimated to move.

A message to all her "little monsters": It's not the end of the world. So her sales were not what all of you were hoping for but its over. It's time to move on.

YESSSSSS YOU went the hell innnnnn on that lol

Yes, Gaga has had numerous and elaborate PR n promotional stunts for this album and her whole career basically

I mean Her Music never spoke for itself in the beginning it was all about

WHAT SHE WORE.
WHAT SHE SAID.
And her music came third to all of that.

Now that
Her crazy outfits have worn off
Shes had her 8 wax statues
Shes had her pro-gay rhetoric and rally support
Shes had her college courses
Shes had the notion put out that shes like god

There is nothing left but her artistry....

And we see that these various outlets do not think to much of it.
to broker all these deals for dirt cheap and free and imposed & incentive copies of her music to boost her sale counts

And again make her appear larger than what she is when her brand is declining

but thank you for the sales bit

Re: The Official LADY GAGA Mega-thread

^^^ Declining? Tell me, when was the last time a pop record sold 1,000,000 copies in it's first week? And that's without getting into how Born This Way (the album) goes way beyond mainstream pop.

Sure, she's a very polarizing artist but that doesn't mean her career is declining. Saying it is is just plain ridiculous when she had first week sales of over 1,000,000 copies. In fact, it's a even greater achievement considering how polarizing she is and how pop albums sales are today and have been for some years now.

When you say her career peaked you are just as right as people who called her a one hit wonder with Just Dance. Or that called Bad Romance her peak, which in some ways still is, but Born This Way (the song) is arguably a new peak in many ways, not just sales wise.

In case anyone feels the incredibly pathetic need to bring up Taylor sales again, let me remind you that comparing pop sales to country sales in the US is plain dumb. But if by doing so you feel better about your own flawed opinion, go for it.

There is nothing left but her artistry....

...and her fan base. Does she need anything else to keep kicking some ass? Doubt it.

If you had told me this before The Edge Of Glory I could have agreed with you when you say Born This Way's (both the single and album) success is all promotion. But then the little but great, barely promoted on Twitter, song came and landed #3 in the hot 100, and proved how she's still got it
