Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey Lands First No. 1 Album On Billboard 200

Singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey captures her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, as "Ultraviolence" bows atop the list. The album, which was released June 17, sold 182,000 in the week ending June 22, according to Nielsen SoundScan — her best sales week yet.

Del Rey's arrival is the largest sales week for a female artist since the week ending Dec. 29, 2013, when Beyonce's self-titled album sold 310,000 in its third week on the chart.

"Ultraviolence" follows Del Rey's major-label debut album, "Born to Die," which Polydor/Interscope Records released in January 2012. It debuted and peaked at No. 2 with 77,000 sold in its first week (ending Feb. 5, 2012). Del Rey has also charted two EPs: a self-titled effort that hit No. 20 and "Paradise," which reached No. 10.

"Born to Die" surpassed 1 million in sales earlier this year in February. Its cumulative total stands at nearly 1.1 million.

How Lana Del Rey Fought to Get Her Radical 'Ultraviolence' LP Released

"There was a lot of bullshit I'm not used to," Dan Auerbach tells Rolling Stone

Lana Del Rey's new album, Ultraviolence, qualifies as a radical statement from a pop star in 2014 – it's mostly produced by Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach, who relies on electric guitar and other live instruments, and none of its eleven tracks sound much like a potential radio hit. And as Auerbach reveals in Rolling Stone's new Del Rey cover story, her major labels (Interscope and the U.K.'s Polydor) were initially resistant to the idea of releasing it.

"There was a lot of bullshit I'm not used to," Auerbach tells senior writer Brian Hiatt. "The label says, 'We're not going to give you the budget to extend this session unless we hear something.' And we send them the rough mix and they fucking hate it and they hate the way it's mixed. And it's like, 'Thanks, asshole.'… I think Lana put her foot down. Maybe it's normal for her, but it's not normal for me. Really rubbed me the wrong way. I got really defensive because I thought it was bullshit.

"The story I got told," he continues, "is that they played it for her label person and they said, "We're not putting out this record that you and Dan made unless you meet with the Adele producer. And she said, 'Fine, whatever.' And she was late to the meeting, so while they were waiting, the label guy played what we recorded for the Adele producer and he said, 'This is amazing, I wouldn't do anything to change this.' And here's the kicker: Then all of a sudden, the label guy said, 'Well, yeah, I think it's great, too.'"

Del Rey acknowledges a six-week period this past spring when Ultraviolence was in limbo. "I mean, I think there were people they wanted me to work with," she says. "I don't know who they were. When I said I was ready, they were like, 'Are you sure?'" She laughs. "'Because I feel like you could go further.'"

Kim Gordon Slams Lana Del Rey in Memoir: 'She Doesn't Even Know What Feminism Is

A section in Kim Gordon's new memoir, Girl in a Band, is getting some attention, where the Sonic Youth founder makes an example out of Lana Del Rey, saying she doesn't know a thing about feminism.

Gordon is citing an interview with The Fader last year, where Del Rey said feminism is "just not an interesting concept."

In the memoir, Gordon writes: http://www.billboard.com/articles/n...a-del-rey-memoir-doesnt-know-what-feminism-is

James Franco is writing a book about Lana Del Rey

Seriously, is there anything James Franco can't do?

You would think that being a famous actor and former Oscars host would be enough for Franco, who is well-known for his interesting professional moves, including college professor and soap opera actor.

But it looks like Franco is now returning to another one of his side gigs: author.

According to Penguin Random House's website, Franco has penned a book about his friend singer Lana Del Rey.
