I bought a new laptop almost a month ago, but when it starts it shows the first page, then the screen goes blank and beeps for about 30 seconds. Then windows will start. Is this normal or is windows not starting right away? Anyone know?

That does not sound normal to me. What is the make/model of the laptop (for example, a dell inspiron 1501 or say a dell XPS M1330, etc.)? maybe we can look up the manual and see if there is any info in it on beeping. When you say it shows the first page, do you mean it shows the windows logo, manufacturer's logo, or some lines of text about your laptop?

if nothing else i'd call technical support if your laptop is still under warranty, which i'd guess it is if it's only a month old. was it doing this when you first got it?

The screen going blank for 30 seconds is fine and normal. Does it actually beep FOR 30 seconds, or does it only beep once or twice as the screen goes blank? If the latter, then that too is normal and you have nothing to worry about.

It's only if you're getting a LOT of beeps, or one long beep, that you should be worried.

It's a Gateway 520. I've never really timed the beeps, but it seems like it's long. The screen that comes up is the Gateway logo and F menus at bottom. Then it goes gray and shows a curser and beeps. Then after that the windows scrolling bar thing pops up then I have no problems after that. I'll time the beeps and see how long it actually is.

Oh and the battery light blinks. So is that it?

whoaaaa, are u saying the actual beep is 40 seconds long? or the blank screen? a 40 second beep is not a good thing...

It's short beeps that go on for 40 seconds Gateway told me to start the whole entire computer over, but I have all of my programs installed on there now and most are ones you have to download. I think I'll just put up with the beeps in that case. Everything else works just fine on the computer.
