Laptop Recommendations

You can price out a MacBook online at
http://www.apple.com/macbook/macbook.html
or a MacBook Pro at
http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/

press the *buy now* button. don't worry. It will just give you options and a final price.

If you need a fair amount of speed get 2 gigs of ram.
The MacBook Pro also comes in a 17" which is not recommended if you use it on a plane a lot. Plus it has 802.11n wireless and is available with a 7200 rpm drive for ultimate speed.

You can also order from Dell online but the problem is you would be gettin a Dell dude.:(

woof woof I'm a sheep dog - woof woof dude - get back in your pen woof
noelie, dontworryaboudit. You earn your living across the pond fixing MS stuff that crapped out. Centex is in Texas. If he gets a Mac it won't hurt your bottom line.:gogirl:

I too like my Gateway. It's my second -- I buy a newbie every 3 years like clockwork, and both are working fine (old one is busily bittorrenting its days away into an external harddrive I use to carry it to and fro for backing up on DVD using the newbie).

Time for a new one this year. Customize? Gateway is fine for that. Vista will be worth checking out maybe in six months, so I'll wait until then.

And get 2gig RAM 8'/. But I'm thinking of a tower this time instead of a laptop: twice as much for your money, and my 3-year old "newbie" laptop works just fine for all my old games . . . oh, yeah, there's the work thing too, heehee.

[-X Ugh... ](*,) How many times do i have to say it. Mac's suck Apple seeds. :p And a Mac is not a computer, it's a Mac. :##:

Centex clearly wants a laptop computer, not a laptop Mac. I can't blame him either, i doubt he needs a doorstop.

Aww, you are just bitter cos you don't know how to write games for a Mac.
Besides if Macs aren't computers I am very lucky to have not needed a computer since 1987. We run our business on a non pc.;)

No, they are computers. Macs use firmware opposed to using a BIOS like a PC to boot, but it's essentially the same thing anyway. Aside from that, there's no difference.

Why would i want to make a game for a Mac?? That would be like making a game called "grind your head against concrete" ;). I'm not bitter, i just think Macs are useless and worthless .

If you have lots of time and money for constant repairs and upgrades, and don't mind viruses, get a PC. Otherwise, join the Mac revolution. Maybe PL is right and Macs aren't computers - they sure work a hell of a lot better and do a lot more things than any PC I've ever used.

Make things easy on yourself, get a Mac.

I get a new Sony Vaio every couple years. They are the best laptop in existance. They don't have issues until a few years into it when all computers bog down. I use dells for work applications and they are good but not as comfy as a Sony.

ANyways that is my endorsement.

For one more suggestion. I recommend that you go with brand name. Unless you enjoy fixing computer problems you need the huge maker support. That will ensure if you have a issue it will be resolved quickly and to your satisfaction.

Finally, Mac's do rock but the previous pst are right get a MAc if you want the experience and get a PC if you want a seemless transition.

Well, I'm on the prowl based upon all of the really great advice that I've gotten. I've really been trying to keep my purchase under $1,000 and between Sony, Toshiba, IBM/Lenevo, and Gateway I think that I can do it.

Thanks for the links to Mac, I'll check those out as well.

BTW, FWIW I learned operating systems on an Apple.

Some of ya'll really should consider how "geeky" it sounds when "flame-wars" are started publicly about operating systems.

I'm not saying, I'm just saying...

PL is right, I don't need a "door-stop." If I'm going to lay down close to a grand on a laptop, I'm sure as hell planning on getting a few years of service out of it.

You'd be hard-pressed to come up with a competing laptop for the Macbook, especially at it's price. They're sturdy, and I personally find them mighty attractive. If OS X isn't your thing, you can run Windows, too. I used to suggest IBM, but they're not so much my thing anymore. What exactly are you planning on doing with it?

I'm not sure if I ever explained that. I'm looking for something that is lightweight, capable of high speed wireless internet, play DVD's, burn CD's, store photographs and video, and be sturdy as hell. ..|

Ah - Mac v. PC - the arguments seem to be more religious and faith-based than anything else. If you want a Mac - get one - lots of folk use 'em and love 'em. If you want a PC - go for it. Just make sure that whatever you get, you have a decent insurance policy, and that the company either sends a person to you, or provides you with another machine while yours is being fixed.

And on the subject of Macs, this is very old and out-dated, but still pretty funny:

I just made the switch to Mac as well. There's a small learning curve to OS X after using windows for years upon years, but now that I've got a handle on things I love this operating system.
What Rotary said.
I just bought the 13.3" MacBook. It is my first Mac and I'm loving it!

Just in case you forgot, here are the links that Sheep provided.
I, however, bought mine from BestBuy.

If the Mac isn'ta computer... then what is it?

I think go with the IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad. If at some point you ever decide to switch to Linux, all the hardware should be supported well too so you get benefits from supporting open manufacturers, though I guess the same goes for Linux on a Macbook, actually..

I just made the switch to Mac as well. There's a small learning curve to OS X after using windows for years upon years, but now that I've got a handle on things I love this operating system.

I also have Windows XP installed on a separate partition, which runs natively, so it's exactly the same as having it on any other laptop. Battery life with OS X is also a huge plus.

I'm exactly the same. Today I picked up my 17" MacBook Pro from the Apple Store and I haven't had this much fun using a computer in a long time - and I was a computer technician for four years before joining the Army!!!

Everything is easy and believe it or not, it just works. For a 'nerdy' type of guy that has to have everything just the right way, and spends hours on a windows machine being meticulous and ensuring that everything is just right, I was all set and ready to run on my new mac in just under 30 minutes. I dual boot Windows XP on here for games and such, but thats all! Everything else is done under OS X.

I really like Safari and iCal, but it does have drawbacks like the Mac version of AIM being really bad and iChat, while AIM protocol compatible, doesn't have nearly as many options and is difficult to use with Mac-PC AIM chats because of the differences.

You must of never have used iChat because it has some amazing capabilities that AIM doesn't have. Yes AIM does have some nice features, for example you can sign on with multiple screen names at the same time. You cannot do that with iChat. BUT, you can download AIM for MAC and use that instead, so that aspect of the argument is moot. As for iChat, it has incredible video conference capabilities. Especially now that all the macs come with built in iSight cameras. They are MUCH better than any other webcam I've ever seen. The program allows for a very clear and fluid picture. It is more clear and lifelike than any other conference I've ever used. It also has integrated audio, which works very well, especially with the sensitive built in mics w/ the iSight. It's almost as if the person is in the room with you. For me, iChat alone is more than a good enough reason to purchase a Mac, especially considering how much I like to cam ;-)

Additionally, mac's rarely crash. I've had mine for almost 2 years now, and it has never once crashed on me. Individual programs may freeze from time to time, but you can just force quit the program and start over. It's not like control alt delete on windows, where you have to wait 2 minutes and get that blue screen. The cursed blue screen! And then it's game over and you have to restart the computer.

I seriously suggest looking into getting a Mac. I'll never go back to PC.

This for housekeeping only. I have messages emailed to me on threads I have posted on. I got the following but it never showed up in the thread. Sorry, I have been busy moving or I would have gotten to it sooner.

Thank you for giving us another great example of how many Mac user are crazy and completely full of them selfs.

I expected that, and you came through. It's as predictable as provenlogic's "contributions."

I won't sit back and be insulted any more by know-nothing ignoramuses who expect they'll get free rides because if anyone complains, he'd be accused of worshipping at the altar of Apple.

That's as much bullshit as the rest of it. I'm not defending Apple as a company and don't give a damn about Steve Jobs. Jobs is a petty dictator who throws childish temper tantrums, as he did when he threw a malfunctioning camera at a flunky during one of his "keynotes," after which his speeches were never shown live and unedited again.

I'm angry at the charges — the latest by provenlogic's mob-rule parroting — of ignorance and stupidy for using a "doorstop;" against the never-ending litany of computer-illiteracy charges by such as provenlogic who mindlessly make them because it's easy and so much fun insulting others for buying and using "a Mac that isn't a computer."

Any thread on computers a Mac user joins is assaulted by such chimps throwing their turds, and provenlogic wasn't happy hurling them once. He had to hurl them twice, the second time bashing an animated head against a wall to intensify his "proof" of the stupidity of Mac users.

If anyone is worshipping at a computer altar, it's provenlogic, who by faith alone knows Macs are shit and their users beneath contempt. He should be a Southern Baptist.
---Quote---
It's known all over the tech world how Mac users get all insulted when someone puts down their "oh so kewl" machines.
---End Quote---
What you know about the "tech world" and "kewel" machines would fit in the thimble you use to make doilies because you're gay and gays make doilies. They aren't fit for anything else. Everyone knows that. Show me a doilie and I'll show you a gay.
---Quote---
Relax, i mean really it's a damn computer. :lol2:
---End Quote---
Exactly.
---Quote (Originally by provenlogic)---
If you haven't heard of the brand or know someone who has, dont buy it.
---End Quote---
Why not? Wall-bashing heads and insults do not an argument make. If you have sound reasons, state them. Don't join the chorus of mindless, chanting MS altar boys. Doing so only proves you haven't a sound argument in your pretty little head.
---Quote (Originally by provenlogic)---
An Apple/Mac is not a computer, it's an Apple/Mac.
---End Quote---
Thus sayeth the expert.

I won't be intimidated by insulting anti-gay bigots nor bigots who employ the same methods to slam my other "lifestyle," even with something as trivial as the brand name on my computer. If it's trivial enough for him to slam me, it's trivial enough for me to strike back. I'm not stupid, I won't be labelled as stupid and I'm calling the turd-hurler on it.

A person who is happy and excited because he's just purchased a Mac and posts about it is met with derision and insults, and anyone who dares come to his defence is derided as worshipping at the altar of Apple. Well, fuck you and the PC you rode in on.

It is as though Windows users are threatened by Macs, and must ridicule those who use them to secure their own places in the world. It's baseless and it's tiring and no one needs that shit.
---Quote (Originally by provenlogic)---
Only get one if you want an Apple/Mac.

Well, duhhh.
