I have this laptop ibm think pad I reinstalled windows xp on it and it shuts off by its self it makes a clicking sound and turns off.

Could be a few things... sounds like it may be a combination of things. If you've wiped the drive, and it still does it, then its hardware related. It could be overheating. Also could be the hard drive. Run it by your local computer repair shop and let them know what its doing. If it is an older laptop, I'd just replace it, they're sometimes more expensive to fix than they are worth! Good luck!

Poke around the settings/preferences.

Laptops have a shut-down/sleep feature to conserve battery power.
If you re-installed the default settings are probably being used.

I don't use XP so I can't be much more specific than that.

does it shut down even when it's plugged into a wall socket? my laptop will shut off when the battery is really low. the clicking is probably a bad sign though, that could be a sign of hard drive failure. can you listen to the clicking to tell where it's coming from (i.e., the hard drive)?

Yes it shuts down when its plug into a wall socket. i heard it make a clicking sound when it shut down . Do you think if i replace the hard drive it could resolve the issue? I never had a laptop before im new to all this.

have you installed all of the windows updates after reinstalling? If not, you are vulnerable to worms than can do that.

clicking sounds are never good. :(

the hard drive going bad, i wouldn't have thought would make it shut down. i think it would make it lock up, but not shut off.

assuming you have windows XP, try starting up the laptop and pressing F8 to get into the boot menu and then select "safe mode" and see if it continues to shut down even in safe mode.

there are worms and viruses that can cause your computer to shut down. when it shuts off, does it log you out of windows or does the laptop just cut out completely?

It cuts off completely its like someone unplug it and it turns off. I have it on safe mode right now . It does lock up sometimes

I remember the virus that was out that had the timer and it shut the computer off this one just shuts it off

Boot the friggin' laptop with ubuntu. If it continues to shut down, it's your hardware. If it runs fine, it's a Windows virus.

Find the box that says "Randomly shut down my computer while I'm working" and uncheck it.

 @ HaX0788

You made a screen cap of a screen cap

that is certainly a good idea. look for one of the "live" linux distributions such as Ubuntu or Knoppix. they will run off the cd/dvd and not do anything to your system unless you ask them to specifically. you can usually get them in "linux magazine."

i can't for the life of me remember the virus that will cause your computer to restart. there are probably more than one. there was a temp fix for that and a patch to download from MS, but i can't remember what it was called! #-o

is your computer updated with all the critical patches from MS? if you have windows XP you can go here and let it scan to make sure you have all the critical and security updates: http://www.windowsupdate.com/?wt_svl=20527a&mg_id=20527b
