LA's New Half-Billion dollar school

With a good enough education, maybe some of those young men and women will have more options than joining the military.

(and by the way... i'm not slagging the military.. but I think that our services should be nothing but people who WANT to be there, not augmented by people who had no other choice)

I hear ya. We are in enough wars to last for quite a while and I'm sure they will.

And from a post above from someone in LA, it's not in an affluent area. So the poorer kids have a more than nice school to go to. Like it has been said, the Taj Mahal.

Here's the problem I have with that; it doesn't matter how nice the school is if dropout rates are still the same, and overall achievement is far below the average. I'm not saying that they deserve a crappy school because of that, so don't think it.

What I AM saying is that they could have built a more than adequate facility for a little more than 1/5th the cost of this monstrosity. Its a waste of resources for them to have built this for that cost.

^^

I went to http://www.msnbc.msn.com/ and found in their video section this video. Sorry I don't know how to put any videos other then youtube.

Inside L.A.’s controversial $578 million school

They said that the money did not come from the districts building fund but from the bond election and therefore the money could not be used for anything else. Nothing, nada, zilch.

Just because they approved the bond measure for $20 billion doesn't excuse their irresponsibility in their spending. They're not obligated to spend all of it, and if they can't do it building reasonably priced schools then they shouldn't spend all of it.

I figure if we can invest some money into schools... we can make going to school worth it and we can have more students graduate. To be honest... I'm a lot happier about this half billion dollars than the how many hundred billion wasted on the war in Iraq?

This goes way beyond investing in schools. This is excessive. There was no need to spend more than $200 million on a facility like this, and even THAT would be pushing it.

All of this was set in stone long before Ca had the money problem. The bond issue called for it, the residents voted for it.

Here's the thing though; the bond issue did not approve a $578 million dollar school. It approved lump sums adding up to $20 billion for construction and improvements, with the expectation that the school board would act responsibly with the money.

Oh, and btw, with these new super-expensive schools, the district has been unable to afford renovations and additions to schools that badly need them.

Here's some background on the performing arts high school, whose expensive redesign was pushed for by a billionaire philanthropist with the understanding he would help make up the difference in cost. He didn't, and LA was stuck with the massively inflated bill.

I'm sure adding 1 or 2 million dollars to existing schools would help the ones who need it most.

This is an outrage! Spending millions of dollars on a school? It HAS to be Obama's fault. We all know Kenyan-born Muslim socialists are trying to educate our children when we all know ignorance is bliss.

How dare they spend millions of dollars on a school?! That money was taken away from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It would have been much better utilized on giving tax cuts for the wealthy and profits for large multinational corporations. Think of the stockholders, people! Bentleys are expensive and necessary and how do you expect them to buy and maintain them?

Schools shouldn't cost that much..... they should cost $200 million, or $100 million, no wait, $50 million or $1 or $ 2 million. They should cost only as much as I say they should cost.

And building it in a neighborhood like east Los Angeles? Insanity! Those people don't want to learn, they're lazy and drop out of school all the time. Biulding a Taj Mahal school in a poor neighborhood is a waste. What's the matter with Brentwood? Or Encino? Those people pay more taxes so they should get the best.

This is all that socialist Obama's fault. He thinks everyone is created equal and we all know that's not true. Isn't that the thought behind socialism, that all men are created equal? Goddamn Thomas Jefferson, he's a socialist too. I hope Texas re-writes their history textbooks to disavow him.

It would be like a paradise for me. attending that cool school studying performing arts!!!!
