The Waltons
Jason befriends a young Black boy who plays the trumpet very well.
Woman: "We were very pleased with your performance Jason, There was only one misgiving about your performance. Its a little bit too long. Maybe you can cut that tune with the little boy with the trumpet"
Jason: "If its just the length that bothers you, I'd just a soon keep Josh's number in and cut something else"
Woman: Jason, there's a certain festival tradition we must uphold. A person of color has never been part of our tradition"
Jason: "What are you talking about?"
Woman: "That little boy who plays the trumpet is Negro"
Jason: "Are you saying Josh can't perform because he's colored?"
Woman: "We wouldn't want anyone to feel uncomfortable"
Jason: "What will happen if I don't take Josh out of the program?"
Woman: "Well, I think you know the answer to that. And I'm sure you'll make the right decision. I hope we'll see you on Saturday"
Woman leaves
Josh: "What did she say?"
Jason:"We're not playing at the festival
Josh: "Why not?"
Jason "They didn't like our music"
(Jason and Josh in car)
Josh: Why did we get this job?"
Jason: "The committee didn't like our music"
Josh (thinking) "It's because of me, isnt it?"
Jason: "Yeah"
Josh: "Its because I'm colored, isn't it?"
Jason: "She didn't say so but that's what she meant"
Josh: "You didn't want to make music for the those women." It's wrong Jason"
Jason: "Of course, it's wrong. That's why I told them I wouldn't play"
Josh: "It's wrong that you don't get to play. Just forget about me. Take the job anyway."
(Josh leaves the car, and sits on a log. He throws his trumpet into the bushes. Josh's mom calls for him. Josh starts to cry. End of scene)
