A valid ID?

How about a driver's license?

Nope. Not enough.

How about a driver's license AND a social security card?

Nope. Still not enough.

This poor Latino man was handcuffed, detained and thrown into jail for making the mistake of having only TWO forms of ID.

The police had 'reasonable suspicion' that he was an illegal immigrant (gee, I wonder what led them to that hunch....) even though he was a natural born American citizen.....

For all those who thinks that having one form of ID is fine and dandy, think again.

Who the fuck carries a birth certificate around with them?

If you're walking down the street or going for a morning job, you'd had better bring at least three forms of IDs (including proof of residency) in Arizona or your colored ass will be detained.

PS. A certificate of live birth will not suffice by Arizona law....guess that means I can't visit Arizona.......

Well at least white people don't have to worry. No cop is gonna stop them....

If Wisconsin or Washington state enacted this law to prevent illegal Canadian immigrants, you'd bet every single white person in America would be against it....

That's why this dumbfuckery will not stand. It's an appalling violation of our rights.

It's clearly HIS fault. He was probably dressed in non-American fashion.

Or he had some sorta accent that was funny.

Still, he should have carried at least five forms of identification.

When I use the bathroom, I ALWAYS take my birth certificate with me just in case the police bursts the the windows and demand my ID.

I don't mind though. It's in the interest of AMERICA.

One thing to note: This happened before the new law passed, which clearly spells out what qualifies as 'proper' id.

Also, from what the story said, this truck driver didn't exactly help when he answered questions ambiguously enough to create suspicion.

That being said, in this case, its curious why his social security card wasn't enough. Surely the officer had the means to see if the number was valid, so why didn't he use it?

It's not a case of racial profiling at all.

Rough but I can see why they detained him.

Oh, please. He showed them his driver's license AND social security card.

They ran it and it STILL wasn't enough.

If he were white, he would have been let go.

But because he was Latino, they obviously thought it was forged or a fake.

Yes.

A valid driver's license.

He had that AND a social security card.....

Define 'ambigious'

You mean, he answered their questions in way that they didn't like.

Regardless, his IDs should have done all the talking...

That being said, in this case, its curious why his social security card wasn't enough. Surely the officer had the means to see if the number was valid, so why didn't he use it?

Hmmmm....well, he is Mexican-y looking.......

^Even if it was - so what? Difficult to prove and the legal system is probably "precedent buffered" so the case wouldn't even be heard.

So what?

When a police officer stops you in front of gay bar for suspicion of drug use or public sex, than come back and tell me again 'so what'?

I find it disturbing that you don't care that he was clearly racially profiled and they abused their power.

And please, he can file a lawsuit.

This is America. We can sue the pants of anybody for any damn reason.

A first year law student wouldn't have any trouble filing a lawsuit and arranging a media circus.

Yes.

A valid driver's license.

He had that AND a social security card.....

And this happened before the law passed. Or did oyu miss that fact? Prior to the law there were no set guidelines as to what qualified as 'proper' id.

Well, if you'd actually read the story you posted...

“Because he didn’t answer the questions correctly. He stated that, you know, his mother is in Mexico currently. That’s where she lives. And I asked them, you know, is it a crime for his mother to be in Mexico? And he said it’s not but, he just thought it would be suspicious.”
Hmmmm....well, he is Mexican-y looking.......
And he was a truck driver. There is a huge problem with human smuggling through commercial shipping, and this was no doubt part of this incident. You should also be aware that commercial shipping from Mexico through border states has increased since September, so these officers likely question all truck drivers in this way.

So does the new law actually define what is considered proper documents to prove legal residency?

I am entire cynical .... there is just something about this that does not gel ... the outrageous law does not come in to effect until later this year so that is the first thing.

The second thing is the crocodile tears from the wife.

This whole thing has suspicious written all over it.

So he was a truck driver. So what? He was stopped, he had two forms of valid ID, he did not have a truck full of illegals. He was still detained.

Should all Latinos in or passing through Arizona now consider themselves on notice to have at least 3 forms of ID on themselves at all times especially if they drive trucks?

If Wisconsin or Washington state enacted this law to prevent illegal Canadian immigrants, you'd bet every single white person in America would be against it....

That's because ALL white people are racist ,right? Or howbout this, when 20 million Canadians come into our country ILLEGALLY then we'll take it from there..

Oh yeah, the story sounds like bullshit to me..

You find it disturbing? Get over it. He probably acted suspiciously. He can file but he probably won't. I am sure Arizona has tons of these incidents. But I'll follow it and see if there's anything that comes of it. It think though it will fade as a non-event. There just are so many other things going on that are more important and higher profile. This is trivial stuff.

I'm through here.

Yes, violations of people's rights are so trivial.
Oh, yes, they came and took away that Jew down the block, but it didn't really bother anybody, and hey, he was a Jew, he was probably doing something suspicious.....

And please, he can file a lawsuit.

He should file a lawsuit. Some bored paralegal would be competent enough to help out your first year law student.

Appears this is may be another bogus story. I could find nothing about it in AP, New York Times, Fox News, CNN.

I did find the story on MSNBC - but it was a link from azfamily.com. All the other links from from blogs or agenda based sites.

I found it in city and state newspapers in Arizona, Colorado, and Iowa, besides a whole array of blogs on both sides of the spectrum.

But I guess if the big corporate media doesn't carry it, it didn't happen.
