Lauryn Hill Reunites With Pras at 2011 Rock The Bells: Watch

OOn Saturday (Sept. 3), Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Nas and more hit the stage in New York for the 2011 Rock The Bells festival. Ms. Hill performed vintage tracks from "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" such as "Doo Wop (That Thing)" and "Lost Ones." Pras surprised fans when he joined Hill on stage to perform songs from The Fugees' golden days such as "Ready or Not" and "Killing Me Softly.

"Just got off the stage with Miss Lauryn Hill we rock the stage on rock the bells, clef where you at," Pras tweeted after performing with Hill. Unfortunately Wyclef Jean was in Florida performing at the Marlins vs. Phillies game.

Lauryn Hill Announces New Year's Eve 2012 Party at Shelborne South Beach

At the height of her late-'90s and early-2000s exile from the weird world of popular music, there were rumors (and even media reports) about ex-Fugees frontwoman and queen diva Ms. Lauryn Hill living out of a massive Miami hotel room with her hubby, Rowan Marley (yes, a son of Bob), and their ever-balooning brood of babies.

The location was top secret and it was supposedly protected by an entire team of Buffalo Soldiers. But we here at Crossfade wonder whether Lauryn might've hiding from fame (and Wyclef Jean?) in the Shelborne Beach Resort's penthouse suite?

Probably not. And really, we only ask because Hill just dropped the big surprise (via the @ShelborneSoBe Twitter feed) that she's planning to celebrate New Year's Eve at the swank South Beach spot.

LAURYN HILL GETS 3 MONTHS FOR FAILING TO PAY TAXES

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Grammy-winning singer Lauryn Hill stood in federal court Monday and compared her experience in the music business to the slavery her ancestors endured before a judge sentenced her to three months in prison for failing to pay about $1 million in taxes over the past decade.

"I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them," Hill said before U.S. Magistrate Madeline Cox Arleo. "I had an economic system imposed on me."

Hill, who started singing with the Fugees as a teenager in the 1990s before releasing her multiplatinum 1998 album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," pleaded guilty last year to failing to pay taxes on more than $1.8 million earned from 2005 to 2007. Monday's sentencing also took into account unpaid state and federal taxes in 2008 and 2009 that brought the total earnings to about $2.3 million.

Despite having paid more than $900,000 in the past several days, Hill still owes interest and penalties, the U.S. attorney's office said.

In a forceful but controlled statement to the judge punctuated by occasional raps with her first on the podium, Hill described how she failed to pay taxes during a period when she'd dropped out of the music business to protect herself and her children, who now number six.

She said the treatment she received while she was in the entertainment business led to her decision to leave it.

"There were veiled threats, there was blacklisting," she said, without giving specifics. "I was told, 'That's how it goes, it comes with the territory.' I came to be perceived as a cash cow and not a person. When people capitalize on a persona, they forget there is a person in there."

In addition to serving three months in prison, Hill must pay a $60,000 fine. After she is released from prison, she will be under parole supervision for a year, the first three months of which will be spent under home confinement.

The 37-year-old South Orange resident had faced a maximum sentence of one year each on three counts of failing to file taxes. Her attorney had sought probation, arguing that Hill's charitable works, her family circumstances and the fact she paid back the taxes she owed should merit consideration.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra Moser acknowledged Hill's creative talent and work on behalf of impoverished children but called Hill's explanation for her actions "a parade of excuses centering around her feeling put upon" that don't exempt her from her responsibilities.

"She wasn't interested in all those years in paying what she owed," Moser told the judge.

At the time of her arrest last year, Hill wrote a criticism rejecting pop culture's "climate of hostility, false entitlement, manipulation, racial prejudice, sexism and ageism."

"Over-commercialization and its resulting restrictions and limitations can be very damaging and distorting to the inherent nature of the individual," Hill wrote. "I did not deliberately abandon my fans, nor did I deliberately abandon any responsibilities, but I did however put my safety, health and freedom and the freedom, safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns! I also embraced my right to resist a system intentionally opposing my right to whole and integral survival."

Hill is to report to prison by July 8. It's not clear where she'll serve her sentence. She didn't comment after the sentencing.

She said in a recent post online that she has signed a recording contract with Sony.

"She is looking forward to putting her case behind her and getting back to her music and creating again," attorney Nathan Hochman said.

sad she is going to prison but she shouldnt be above the law
that said, she is sounding more genuinely crazy, mentally off kilter.
Miseducation is still an amazing album. And apart from norah jones, Lauryn's 5 grammy win is the last time a female won 5 grammy's deservedly

And apart from norah jones, Lauryn's 5 grammy win is the last time a female won 5 grammy's deservedly

So basically you're saying Amy Winehouse, Beyonce and Adele didn't deserve their 5 plus Grammys?

^ I know you didn't post that question to me... but I'm saying that Beyonce didn't deserve her 5. [-X

L-Boogie just needs to pay up and serve her time. I seriously doubt she will do 3 months unless she goes to the sentencing talking that looney shit been talking. She still has to pay taxes and she could have done that thru accountants w/o being in the public eye.

Much as i'll stan out for Lauryn in a heartbeat, maybe she can use the time away to repair her voice. Stupid move, comparing having to pay taxes to some form of slavery - you may be what r&b, soul, and rap REALLY, REALLY needs right now... but that doesn't make you above the law.

Do the time, pay the fine, make your new CD a great one already!

Is Lauryn Hill's New Single Homophobic?

Do you hear 'guru men' or 'girl men?'

Three days before being sentenced to three years in jail for tax evasion, singer Lauryn Hill released a new single called "Neurotic Society." It's the former Fugee's first single since 2010's "Repercussions." And in true Lauryn Hill fashion, the track, an anti-establishment, anti-celebrity harangue, is causing controversy, particularly what's being read -- heard? -- as Hill's apparent anti-LGBT rhetoric.

In a litany of examples of how society's crumbling, Hill lists "social transvestism," "drag queens" and what sounds like "girl men," all three of which have Monica Miller at BET.com wondering if the singer's mixing her messages:

"'Neurotic Society' proclaims again that Babylon is falling — thanks in part to tricksters like 'girl men,' 'drag queens,' and the lies of 'social transvestism.' Whether or not Hill is merely using these comments as examples of the smokescreens and sleight-of-hands that pervade this 'Neurotic Society' is unclear. Beyond intention, these sorts of statements suggest that society is in a shambles because it’s been taking too many cues from the LGBTQ community, acting like 'girl men,' 'drag queens' and 'transvestites.' Is her beef with oppressive society or is her issue with people who don’t abide by a traditional family structure?"

But is it homophobic? The phrase "social transvestism," when coupled with the next line, "subliminal dressed up as piety," could be read as a commentary on the government's misrepresentation of itself or perhaps as a jab at organized religion, especially the Catholic Church, which Hill has denounced in the past.

As for "girl men:" that particular line, delivered right at the beginning of the quick fire track, is being interpreted by some as "guru men." The website Lyrics Debut hears "guru men," as does the producer of this fan-made video. But the site Rap Genius agrees with Miller and translates Hill's rant into "girl men." Here's the track, with the "guru" interpretation. Do you hear the same thing?

But what about the "drag queens" line? It comes almost immediately after a smear against "pride fiends." That could be interpreted by some as a vilification of gay pride. But, then again, it could also be interpreted as the simple ramblings of a compicated woman known for making outlandish comments.

Lauryn Hill and Stephen, Damian, and Julian Marley at Nine Mile Music Festival 2014

Ms. Lauryn Hill, the one-time Fugee, one-time costar of Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, five-time Grammy-winner, and mother of five children with another of Bob's sons, Rohan Marley, reminded us though she might not ever record another album, her live performances are hurricane-level forces of nature.

Supported by keyboards, guitar, bass, bongos, a drum set, a DJ, and three backing singers, Hill showed that she still had the deft touch to merge soul music with hip-hop. She was able to push her voice toward outer octaves on "Everything Is Everything" and even displayed the dexterity to spit lyrics at rapid-fire speed on the Fugees' "Fu-Gee-La." But those weren't the only two genres she played with.

The album accompanies the Netflix documentary What Happened, Miss Simone, both available now.

Dressed in all black, Hill delivered a strong performance of the jazz cover. The stage was packed with almost twenty performers as a part of her backing ensemble which included a string quartet.
