Law Firm Fighting For DOMA Faces Backlash From Legal Groups, Colleges

I don't understand why outside counsel is needed. Doesn't the government have its own legal department? ](*,)

Yes, it does have a legal team. They also have an accounting team but to say their checkbook is unbalanced is the understatement of the universe.

I thought we were broke.
Evidently not. If we have the cash to oppose gay marriage and hire outside attorneys, we should have the money to create jobs. By the way, please see below:

Contract with King & Spalding bars all employees of the international law firm from advocating for repeal of DOMA

I'm not entirely sure that one partner could sign a document binding another partner to a course of action (or inaction). It also seems highly discriminatory.

Yes, that department is not defending DOMA, hence the need for outside counsel under the employ of the House.

So, I have read the links on this thread and I completely agree that DOMA is not defensible and should be struck down.

Having said that, isn't there a right of legal representation? Sure, it's something you [generic you, and no one in particular] disagree with, and it's probably something incredibly wrong but it is nonetheless an arguable case and if someone wants to pay a lawyer to argue it, shouldn't they have that right?

Is the outrage directed at King & Spalding due to the fact that they had previously touted a strong LGBT support record?

Doesn't the firm's contract prohibiting employees from advocacting Respect for Marriage Act contravene the First Amendment? Naturally, the employees are contractually obliged in their employed capacities not to act contrary to the interests of the firm and the client, but in their private capacities they must be able to voice their views.

Just a few thoughts.

$520 an hour is actually about right for the partner of a law firm. I've dealt with a few law firms and accounting firms, and the partners routinely charge about $550 an hour. I saw one who even charged $600 per hour.

Thank you

A Coca Cola spokesman declined to comment on or off the record for this story, but pointed TPM to the company's long public history of support for equality and diversity.
