Lawrence of Arabia

Dare I say, challenging the stereotype that all gay men are effete...and not suitable for the military life.

History records that Megas Alexandros had an enormous appetite for men...after the battle...another success story.

Indeed, we tend to excel in the military, given the correct training........:-)

Despite being married with children the late Louis Mountbatten, last Vice-roy of India also served in the navy, in a senior role often bedding midshipmen needing rapid promotion...;)

Lawrence used to hire an Arab youth to give him recreational canings. I thought everyone knew that.

Some years ago the Imperial War Museum had an interesting exhibition of maps of the Middle East made during the post-WW1 carve-up. Lawrence's own plan, which included amongst other things an independent Kurdish state, was rejected. And now we're living with the results.

So did the Grand Old Duke of York. He had 1,000 men. It's been said that when they were up, they were up and when they were down, they were down. However, when they were only half-way up, they were neither up nor down.

Lawrence had many idealistic plans, most impractical....David Lean's film records the chaos that reigned in Damascus when the Arab liberators failed to agree...on just about everything...today's Middle East religous wars, tribal emnities, political divisions evidence that fact of life for they predate the arrival of European influence....and serve to remind us how divided the Arab tribes were in 1917 when the Ottoman Empire collapsed under the weight of Allied military victories.

A newly established Kurdistan would need land acquired from some five middle eastern states for it to be viable...it's not going to happen...with the Turks refusing to confront IS forces without a deal with The West that ensures the Kurds do not expand their control of Northern Iraq....

Charles, and Edward have always attracted gossip lacking substance....with former employees of the Palace providing the unsubstantiated fuel....newspapers pay well for such nonsense....MI5 usually dampens the ardour of the media, and the dreamers...

No doubt T.E. Lawrence was a great man - his book THE SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM where he chronicles the Arab Revolt is one of the best books I've ever read. He was a rare and wonderful genius.
Another famous British gay imperialist was Cecil Rhodes. The country of Rhodesia ( now Zimbabwe) -was named for him. In his time he was one of the richest and most powerful men in the world. I don't know much about him but I don't think he was a noble admirer of the people in Africa he controlled. All the same, it's interesting a gay men could wield such power in Victorian times.
