So here's the concept :
We all remember learning our own alphabets with the help of songs or melodies when we started school... I always found singing to be a very efficient way to practice foreign languages, be it in learning new vocabulary, practicing comprehension or pronunciation... thus I took the habit to try and find lyrics of foreign songs I like, even when I don't speak the language...
I thought it could be an interesting idea to share and have a music thread that would offer both immediate access to the songs (via youtube links) and to the lyrics both in the original language and in english.
In case someone else is interested in this little project, here are the rules :
- Non english songs are favored, although if an english song has a beautiful text and can help us non native speakers learn new things or simply appreciate beauty of the language it is of course allowed.
- Youtube links are highly favored, I know this will limit songs choices a bit but the idea really is to have direct access to the song... on a second resort links to streaming radios (like radioblog or alike) are allowed.
- Original lyrics and english translation are mandatory.
When a language doesn't use roman alphabet, I encourage using original writing system (for the beauty of the foreign writing
) in addition to a romanized version of the lyrics (the system used for romanization is your choice, you can also create your own if you don't know the official one, using english pronunciation of the alphabet as a base).
For languages written from right to left, it's up to you but please indicate what you chose.
Translations are preferably given on a line by line basis and as literal as possible (unless it makes no sense at all in english of course... if you can't avoid not making sense, explanatory side notes are welcome).
- All styles and genres are welcome, however purely instrumental songs don't belong here, remember we're trying to focus on the lyrics
I think that's it... as an example I will repost a few songs I posted in another thread, that will allow me to correct a few mistakes I missed in my translations...
Ps: I love every languages of the world, I'd especially love to see some Spanish, Italian, Wolof, Swahili, Russian, "Indian", "Chinese" ...
