Leona Lewis' debut album "Spirit" (Syco) has had a blistering start at retail, selling more than 130,000 copies on its first day on the racks yesterday.

The set has sold as many as the rest of the top 10 albums combined, according to preliminary sales figures from charts compiler the Official U.K. Charts Company.

The former "X-Factor" winner's album is on target to surpass 400,000 sales by the end of the week, making it the best debut effort in U.K. sales history, outstripping the 363,735 sales of Arctic Monkeys' "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" (Domino) in January 2006.

Oasis' "Be Here Now," holds the record for the fastest-selling album of all time in Britain. The album shifted 655,000 copies in its week of release in August 1997.

A spokesman for the U.K.'s leading music and entertainment retailer HMV describes Lewis' sales surge as "absolutely remarkable," especially given that the set is up against new releases from the Spice Girls, the Killers, Celine Dion and Led Zeppelin.

"Aside from breaking the Arctic's record for the fastest selling debut album, Leona is already looking a safe bet for the Christmas No. 1, and is very likely to bank more than a million sales before the end of the year," notes the HMV spokesman.

Lewis' second single "Bleeding Love" is the best-selling single of the year in Britain, shifting more than 489,000 copies up to last Saturday, according to the OCC, knocking Mika's "Grace Kelly" (Casablanca/Island) and Rihanna's "Umbrella" (Def Jam) into second and third places for 2007, respectively. "Bleeding Love" is still at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart after three weeks.

Nice enough debut but the girl needs life experiences or something. She comes off as incredibly dull. I do love her version of the Avril Lavigne b-side though. I downloaded a fan made version with the Avril vocals essentially making a duet with Leona. I'm so glad that the album wasn't so Americanized as I suspected it to be.

I was going to get it when it came out but held back because my friend says it's utter garbage. I liked bleeding love though and think her voice is incredible. I'm just a bit weary of buying something i'm ultimately not going to listen to more than once if it's as bad as everyone is saying it is.

It's been number 1 for 4 weeks and 'Bleeding Love' has been number 1 for 7!

So, 'Spirit' has sold more than 2 million albums already. 'Bleeding Love' has gone to No. 1 in 5 cuntries and is in the Top 10 or 5 in like 15 other countries!

^The rest is really good. I do think it's missing a couple really good dance tracks but it's awesome!

I thought you can download via UK ITunes? or may be that's why I'm never bothered with iPod.

'Bleeding Love' has hit number 1 in more than 14 countries! 'Spirit' has sold more than 2 million copies in Uk alone!

And they are ready to release it here in the States! I just saw her new version of the 'Bleeding Love' video and it's amazing!

I like this chick BUT, i dont think they should rush the American release of Spirit because i heard it and it will not do well in the USA. She sold 2 million in the UK because thats where she is from and could sing the phonebook and they buy it.


She needs about 5 or 6 new songs to replace songs that are on the original.

I listened to the entire album and only 3 songs got a pass from me.

She should also do a Whitney and Celine cover on the album to showcase her vocal range.


Anyways i am still looking forward to seeing her debut to America on American Idol this season. Thats such a big stage and most of America will finally get to hear her. I hope she sings a song that allows her to hit those crazy high notes.
