As we all know, while most of the heterosexual world loathes gay people, they love them some (faux) lesbians. But I've been noticing increasingly that some people don't even realize that lesbians are homosexuals. As in, I've seriously encountered people who've said, "Lesbians aren't gay!"

I wonder that if instead of calling homosexual females "lesbians," we started calling them "gay women," would people start realizing that they're numbskulled hypocrites?

...

Nah.

If a man can have sex with another man and still be thought as straight since they didn't kiss or their balls didn't touch, or they didn't touch each others dick or whatever silly rule a lot of men have, can a woman with her tongue down another woman's throat (or elsewhere) still be thought of as straight? Or is she suddenly a bisexual? Or better still...a lesbian?

Amazing how we seem to have two definitions of gay for men and women. Or perhaps I should say amazing how only men can be seen as gay (even then people still debate that) but women get the lesbian label which is totally not gay (even though its two people of the same gender).

For women it seems that no matter what their sexual orientation is, society (or, more accurately, straight men) accept them because they honestly believe that ALL women are willing to swing in whichever direction they want. Bisexuality is actually encouraged. Thusly, women are ALLOWED to swing in whichever direction they want because a lot of people wouldn't give it a second thought if they were with another woman. Two women can hold hands and be all other forms in intimate in public without arousing any sort of suspicion that they might be homosexual.

With men, though, the rules are completely different. If a man even admits to THINKING about being attracted to another man, he is gay. Period. A man who claims to be bisexual is lying and is actually gay. Two straight men can't even look at each other the wrong way without people assuming they're gay. Yes, society has been becoming less strict as acceptance of homosexuals has increased, but it seems like people are still extremely hung up on the idea of men being intimate together, even in platonic scenarios. All roads lead to GAY. It's a very clear double standard.

Most of the world looks at everything through the heterosexual male perspective: war, crime, male and female gender roles, etc. Therefore, women being with women isn't gay in their minds, it's an aspect of heterosexuality. Most straight men believe that everyone should adhere to their behavior, their likes and dislikes. So if a straight man is attracted to women, everyone should have sex with women, even other women. In all fairness though, straight society has definitions of what constitutes 'lesbian' and 'gay woman.' Carmen Elektra, Halle Berry, and Beyonce all having lesbian trysts would be considered heterosexual but Ellen Degeneres and Rosie O'Donnell would be considered homosexual women. See the difference? Society's standards for lesbians come into play. Some men even go as far as to say Rosie O'Donnell might as well be a gay man because of the way she looks while hoping Beyonce is a lesbian.

On side note, it would be interesting to know how gay men would fare in this world if straight women ran everything. Would gay men be to women what lipstick lesbians are to straight men? I find that aspect very interesting.

Don't know about the general straight female population, but if I ran the world, gay/bi men would be loved and cherished. Unfortunately, a lot of straight women who are okay with girl-on-girl still think that male homosexuality is "gross"...but then again, they are conditioned by the straight male society to think that way. Interesting thought.

One of the most honest and sane messages I have ever seen posted on these boards! bonus points for you!

Do not change things to accommodate ignorance.

Educate people. They will pass on information to their ignorant counterparts and so on.

The double standard will be there for a long time. Even in 2010 women are still seen as the lesser gender, men rule the universe and are supposed to be macho, women loving, beer drinking he-men who love to see two women going at it and hate to know that their other beer drinking he-men might have a hard-on for them.

Only way to fix it is through education. Not conforming to what society thinks is right or wrong.

Sad, but painfully true.

I think it's pretty common for straight men to just go along with the pack, bash gay men, and be homophobic.

They think it proves their manhood and they think it asserts their straightness. I don't think straight men would be like this if it were not encouraged.

You don't see women saying "Girl, you're a dyke" if they do something stupid or lame.

Women are MUCH more secure with their sexual identity and "womanhood" than men are with their manhood and sexuality. Things like this sometimes make me wonder if women really are the "fairer" sex.

Ellen DeGeneres loathes the word "lesbian", and has always referred to herself - and other gay women - as simply "gay".

The word "Lesbian" refers to people from the Isle Of Lesbos, not a sexuality.
