Less Than Great First AP Review of "Avatar"

Avatar' nabs $73 million at box office

Cameron pic takes in over $232.2 mil worldwide

Twentieth Century Fox and James Cameron's 3D sci-fi epic "Avatar" posted a worldwide bow of $232.2 million, led by a very merry $159.2 million overseas and a strong $73 million domestically. Global launch was the largest ever for a nonsequel and the sixth biggest international launch overall.

I still think the name Unobtanium is the dumbest name for a mineral ever.

But as i said in the Hot Topics thread - visually stunning, sometimes a beautiful bore, cliches are apparent, but it comes together, and is a GREAT watch.

Sounds like a shoe-in for all the technical Oscars. Now that there are 10 slots for Best Picture I'm sure it will be nominated. Previously with only 5, not so sure.

Gotta agree the special effects were good but the movie not so much.

And yet, we don't see other movies that had great effects like 2012 or Transformers 2 getting Oscar buzz for best picture nomination. Avatar as a whole is a good movie. . . a great movie. There is definitely something special about it that separates it from all the other big special effects movie.

Could it be because now there are 10 nominees?

WEDNESDAY BOX OFFICE
1. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel $18,801,277
2. Avatar $16,445,291

what's your point? The point that was being discussed that some are speculating this movie is only getting nominated because of the special effects. My point was if this were true, then why aren't 2012 and Transformers 2 getting nominated for best picture? To your point, with even with 10 nominations, there still must be something significantly better about Avatar for it to be nominated but those other movies not.

Again, what's your point? Avatar has been out over a week. Squeakquel came out yesterday. And are you suggesting that box office figures have anything to do with Oscar nominations or movie reviews?

Finally saw this last night to please an out of town guest visiting for the holidays.

The previous day we had been to Fairchild Tropical Gardens, one of the top tropical gardens in the world. During the film my friend commented how much more beautiful the one on screen was compared to the real one. I agree. What a visually beautiful movie. The 3D was unlike anything I've ever seen.

BUT the movie as a whole was mediocre. It was like a bad christmas gift wrapped in the most beautiful paper and bow. I became restless at times and hoped the end was near. I'm one of those who usually sits thru all the credits but that cringe worthy theme song made run out as if someone had yelled fire.

It certainly deserves every technical award there is. A Best Picture nomination at Oscar time will sadly deprive a more deserving film though.

KANEOHE, Hawaii (AP) - President Barack Obama's family is spending part of the last day of 2009 watching the futuristic adventure film "Avatar."
The Obamas visited a movie theater near their rented vacation home in Hawaii on Thursday morning for a screening of the 3-D hit. Officials say the first family and their friends had the theater to themselves to watch director James Cameron's tech-heavy film. The Obamas, including first daughters Sasha and Malia, left their compound before noon on New Year's Eve. Before the screening, Obama, a self-described movie buff, worked out at the Marine Corps base nearby. The Obamas are set to return to Washington in the new year.
