Just saw "Less than Zero" on cable

starring Robert Downey Jr. as a 20 something rich kid who sucumbs to drug addiction

how he slowly but surely goes from promising to dead

1987 movie - with Jami Gertz and Andrew McCarthy as his friends who do everything they can to save him

He (Julian as played by Downey Jr) does anything for drug money - including gay prostitution (he's not gay)

an amazing performance by Downey Jr. - he makes u care about him - even though his character is so pathetic - ruining all of his relationships due to his addiction

good music in the movie as well

catch it

if only for the performance of Downey Jr.

](*,)](*,)

Robert Downey Jr. is a superb actor. short of Chaplin, he just has not had the quality of material he deserves. ](*,)

Hi Chance!!!

I remember the movie as DARK and DEPRESSING...

I'm assuming that is due to the content and the GREAT acting abilities of Downy...

The MOVIE TITLE ALWAYS reminds me of one of my FAVORITE SONGS!!!

great post--- an under valued movie, in my opinion

READ THE BOOK!!!!

Never saw the movie!

I was watching this today as well. I've seen it at least 3 times now.

Its a really sad movie, with a very strange, haunting, ethereal feel to it. But something always seems off. Even though I don't think its a good movie, something always draws me in whenever I catch it on TV.
Robert Downey Jr. is great, but Andrew McCarthy is pretty bland. And I've always liked Jamie Gertz. When I think of young 80's actresses I always think of her first.

I've read the book, which, no surprise, was better and way different than the movie. It was written by the same guy who wrote Rules of Attraction and American Psycho.

I was really disappointed in the movie after reading the book, especially about the portrayal of sexuality. In the movie it became this sort of moralistic thing about how the guy just "does anything for drug money - including gay prostitution (he's not gay)" (to quote Chance1) but in the book it's more like people just fuck whoever whether it's for money or drugs or a ride across town. I like the fact that Easton-Ellis shows these immoral people without ever passing judgment on them. It lets you draw your own conclusions more than the movie that to me seemed slightly homophobic and contrived in it's anti-drug message.

feel the way u do

"haunting" - is a great word for it - thinkin a bit about it right now - day later

hear u about it not being that "good" either - but when it's on again, i will watch it

loved clay's car - the red and white sportser

andrew mccarthy IMO is in way over his head in this one - james spader terrific as drug dealer bastard - did feel for am's character at end when he said "he did all he could" for robert downey's character

so torn

not really a good movie

but couldn't stop watching

prob all about downey

I love the Bangles song from that movie

actually, it is about the only Bangles song I really love....

Great movie, of course

You may want to check out their first album "All Over the Place". The songs are much more like this one: Rock and Roll. The album was recorded before the label took over and made them more pop than rock.

yeah, i read the book. and after seeing the movie for Rules Of Attraction, i decided to skip the movie for Less Than Zero because i liked the book.

I don't remember that one but I like Jamie Gertz.

She was Muffy in Square Pegs. ..|

It was a great flick; somewhat eerie as to the how Robert Downey Jr turned out in the end as well in his own life parallel to that of his character.

FYI: The Bangles are covering a Simon and Garfunkel track in Hazy Shade of Winter - truly a fantastic version of an already brilliant song.
