Level the playing field: the Bank On Students Loan Fairness Act

My friend found tremendous success with his degree. He performed onstage with a number of well-known artists, traveled all over the world, produced background music for high-value television commercials, etc. He hosted me for a visit to New York City in the area adjacent to New York University. Tragically, he was later killed in an “accident” caused by a drunk driver.

Classical musicians? Doubt it. We work within our own field usually. Either way, on a student visa, I am not allowed to do non-music related work here, so all my work is with orchestras and churches. But keep trying to randomly attack me for no reason. The picture of the elitist snob who gets everything handed to him is really hilarious when you try to fit it on me.

Also known as "you're really grasping, aren't you?"

attack ?

are you in music or drama ?

if ur gonna give it u need to take it better

Wow, that's sad. I'm sorry...

I worked my way through school. I didn't go to an ivy league school. I had a few years of hard knocks. I bought my first new car when I was 32. I got my first credit card when I was 29. I now make a very comfortable living. In actuality I make more than a few guys I know that went to ivy league schools.

As it stands right now, businessmen are hiring people that can actually do the job. I don't know of anyone that is looking at the school first for employees, especially first hires. The thing they look at first is a hands-on internship, even if it was just a summer thing. In my business, education isn't important at all. So there is that facet too.

I work with a few guys that have advanced degrees from pretty heavy duty schools that are not currently using them. It is good they have something else they can depend on for generating income. These guys are in the very narrow percentage of the population. Actually a lot of my guys are working doing the modeling thing to repay the student loans. Many can do it without too much pain within a few years.

What a touching story. Must be because you're so American.

Oh, this just in - not all fields are business.

I never said I was in business. Yes, I am American, unlike you, as evidenced from your posts. My degree was in Fine Arts...the visual kind. Where you have to present a portfolio of work, actual tangible work. I paid for mine...myself by working my ass of. This is a personal aside. If your avatar is indeed you, I'm guessing you are eastern European. I mean that is what your physiognomy connotes. I may be wrong, but I think I am pretty close. So I'm guessing you probably don't like the U.S. so much...its part of your heritage, yet you drain the American taxpayers of their hard earned money to insult them. I am do glad I was born here and know how to make it on my own. It must be very humiliating to not be able to do that for yourself. I feel nothing but pity for you people.

Your sleuthing is extremely on point, spoiled just a little bit by the fact that me being an Eastern European international student is common knowledge here and that my avatar is Ben Whishaw who is a British actor.

But otherwise you're doing great. I am reporting another one of your foreigner bashes, and will point out that being a foreigner in a foreign land, I have been more "on my own" than you could ever dream of being.

wow, let’s all bash the foreign student. make a line, I won’t be in it. however I do again , have limited knowledge in the field of foreign students, in terms of an overall impact on an economy.

I think that there should be low cost student loans. Just because you have the access to a cheaper loan it doesn’t mean that everybody will go to university(such as those who should not). And gosh, sacrificing bank profits there is a novel idea.

I must admit i am no expert in the student loan area nor am i particularly familiar with how it works over there in the states ? but it seems that there are specific agreements at some institutions , where there are low cost loans backed by the government . otherwise you go to a private bank ?
In the uk there is a government scheme for student loans.
http://www.slc.co.uk/
it offers low interest loans i should know the rate but i don't, partialy because looking and thinking about it would scare me, lol. (i think its Bank of England base rate or BofE rate +0.5%). And when you begin earning over £15k per year the government automatically deduces 10% of your income towards repayment of the loan. This system is the system i am on and has now changed , the repayment rate is lower but takes longer, and the overall cost of the degree is higher as a cap on fees has been raised from £3400ish per academic hear for HE , to £9000 per year (as of this year).

Obviously, we should not be giving scholarships to foreign students, since it necessarily means denying those scholarships to Americans. It happens because administrations decide that "diversity" is more important than helping those Americans. It seldom results in meaningful diversity, since foreign students tend to be just more liberals. We should not even admit foreign students if it involves denying admission to Americans.

You don't get out too much, do you? Please "google" American Field Service. It's a good way for us to get even: Americans studying abroad. God forbid!

*Is "meaningful diversity" in any way related to "legitimate rape"?

Oh Jesus Christ..... is Benny ragging on about immigrants again? That guy is a fucking broken record. ](*,)

To Benevolio.... okay, alright. We know you hate immigrants and immigration. They're the problem with everything in the country. You don't need to go on and on about it. If your policy changes then let us know but STFU about it now.

Too bad for Benvolio that scholarships in the arts are merit and not need based. They decide based on how you did in the audition, not where you are from. But of course, in Benvolio's twisted isolationist worldview, foreigners should be excluded from normal university interaction, be kicked out of the country, preferably with nothing but their clothes and an inflatable raft.

It's refreshing to see this much hatred and know it's utterly impotent :)

No, I am simply more concerned about the Americans brushed aside and left out, for no good reason.

SHOCK!!!! You're more qualified than an AMERICAN!!!! Can't be - you're one of them.......

We all know you're here to get the vote and vote in some liberals......

If you are paying the full tuition price, you clearly are at the wrong college. I got a 50% merit scholarship for undergrad, $5k alumnus discount and secured another $5k in grant money [go economics major!] so my parents ended up paying about $15k/year in tuition and fees which was about the same price they were paying for my high school tuition anyways. I attended a top 100 US undergrad school too [...apparently. Had a good chuckle about that with former college buddies]. Even for grad school, my work paid for most of my schooling and it was only about $10k/year.

I got free tuition to attend any U-Mass school for business and turned it down.

Again, if you are taking out massive loans to pay for undergrad, chances are you don't belong in college. It's the progressive mentality that college is the answer to everything. Trade school-type jobs [HVAC, auto, plumbing, electrician, carpentry etc.] provide quite a good income and tend to be very stable careers also.

I've heard that before. What I've observed is that "trade schools" aren't exactly cheap either, and I've seen some that were outright scams. If you want to follow a trade, you're better off apprenticing with a plumber or carpenter, then following his advice about education and qualifications. Also becoming a plumber doesn't give you portable qualifications. A college degree - usually can be useful across a spectrum of career choices.

The trades do make a good living and you are right about job security - so long as you aren't a cheat or a fuck up.
