I've been on Laxapro, 10mg for the last four month or so and just lately I seem to be having staying awake and whenever my boyfriend and I have sex it always takes me ages to reach orgasm.

Does anyone know if this is something that usually occurs on this medication? I'm going back to the doctors in a couple of weeks but just thought I ask, see if anyone knew anything that could answer my questions.

Kester.

I was diagnosed with GAD a few months back & put on Zoloft. Had similar side effects, including long, vivid dreams [the only good thing about ssri's for me].

I read that the most common adverse side effects of Lexapro are: insomnia, nausea, ejaculation disorder, decreased libido, sweating & fatigue. Delayed ejaculation is common. Again, common side effects to most ssri's. Ive since switched to Celexa [10mg] & an on rare occasion 1/2 dose of Xanax.

Good luck my friend.

I also can affirm that the side effects you are experiencing are quite common. I was on Lex for a while and was eventually changed to Zoloft. I didn't take the Lex long enough to start having the side effects (although the literature I was given by my Dr. listed delayed ejaculation as one of the side effects). I've been on Zoloft now for several months and the side effects I am experiencing are decreased libido, delayed ejaculation, tremors (in both arms and hands). I also had a mild case of diahrea early on but got over that quite quickly. Never had any of the other side effects and as they say, everyone is different.

In any case, don't give up on the Lex because of the side effects you're having now. Discuss them with your Dr. and he can either advise you if they will decrease or go away completely, or change you to something that you're more happy with. Just remember that changing medications can some times mean starting over with the waiting period for them to begin working and it can take up to 8 weeks for anti-depressants to begin showing any positive effect.

Look at it this way. Many guys would die to have the ability to hold off ejaculating for a long time. "More fuck for the buck" ..|

Good luck and stay healthy!

I took lexapro for about a week and just about immediately had sexual side effects so i switched to welbutrin which was really good and actually seemed to boost my sexual desires.. but now i dont take anything

but yeah i didnt like the lexapro at all.. so good luck with the new meds.

if you are taking lexapro in the morning, ask your doctor about taking it at night instead - that might help with the trouble you have staying awake.

I have not heard about lexapro affecting an ability to orgasm. Ask your Dr. about wellbutrin ( similar to lexapro ). My boyfriend takes wellbutin and has no problems with it. It also helps him with depression and anxiety.

I also took lexapro and had the same problem with ejactulation almost immediately which led to a decreased desire as well. Ive taken welbutron and effexor with out any problems. While it might seem great to be able to lasts longer its not alot of fun when you dont think you will ever reach orgasm and can be tireing to both yourself and your partner.

The sexual side effects of these drugs are a big bummer. I think asking your doctor to switch to Wellbutrin, might be the answer. It works a little differently than the SSRI's and it has a touch of stimulant in it. But whatever you decide, I wouldn't abandon the medication until you have given it substantial time to work. That can be 4-6 weeks. After you start feeling better, you may be able to get off the drugs completely. That's the goal.

Good Luck.

I'd like to keep in touch with those here on JUB's who are on SSRI's.

Like SNickers52 & BoSoxFanVa remind us, these drugs take a while to develop full affect. I was told it would take SIX MONTHS for Zoloft to work, & that was after increasing my does to 100mg! I hated the side effects; I actually had more anxiety & tremendous loss of concentration. Zoloft was killing me both mentally & physically as I had a hard time producing work. Coming off SSRI's can be a nightmare too if you do not follow the step down orders of a doctor. I rushed mine & had all kinds of weird side effects & finally requested Celexia.

CagedBird I spoke with several doctors and other mental health professionals before I went on Zoloft. I was told by all of them that it would take 2-8 weeks for it to work, but that most people see a difference in the first week or two. I hope whoever told you it would take 6 months was grossly exagerating. Zoloft is very close to Lexapro in makeup. My doctor is very close with the man who brought Lex to America from Europe. His son was severely clinically depressed for years and they had tried everything and nothing worked. He finally went over to Europe to investigate medicines he was hearing about that were working well there. He eventually got his son on the drug that he would eventually start a company in America to distribute (calling it Lexapro). His son got significantly better rapidly on the Lex.

At my age I'm not all that worried about the lowered libido. Quite frankly my libido has been so high for so many years it's actually a little nice to not be thinking about it all the time (for a while at least). My main concern is the tremors. My hands tremble at times to the point that if I put my hand under my head in bed to stop the trembling the tremors eventually transfer up into my arms. This can be quite annoying at times. I had a friend recently at dinner in a restaurant comment on my shaking hands and he asked me if I was trying to come off alcohol or something (I rarely drank before taking SSRI medicines and don't drink at all now). I guess he thought I was about to go into the DT's or something. LOL

The wheels came off my wagon about 7 months ago. I had such a severe panic attack that it sent me to the E.R. [not having a clue as to what was going on]. I thought I was loosing it, couldn't concentrate, chest pains, shortness of breath.
Thought heart attack, bot NOT!

The E.R doctor told me [as you did] aprox 6-8 weeks for Zoloft to kick in fully.

My doctor [next day] said it could take up to 6 months for Zoloft to work.
She also increase dose after 3 months as I was still having anxiety, loss of concentration

I endured Zoloft for 6 months & a week & got off it in favor of a lower dose Celexa.

I hate SSRI's. I'm stepping down my Celexa to 10mg. Three weeks & no anxiety/panic so far. Also, no Xanax needed.

Agree about libido, us "mature" guys often run hot anyway. Maybe SSRI's could be a saltpeter of sort, lol.

I've taken Lexapro AND Zoloft in the past, and they both gave me negative side effects. Mainly sexual side effects; not being able to have an orgasm (easily, at least...). It would take me FOREVER to reach an orgasm when I would masturbate or have sex, and that really sucked, as my sex drive is high and I stay horny and jackoff often. Afterall, I am a YOUNG guy with my hormones raging still. LOL

I've had my doctor take me off of both, and now I'm on Remeron. It works well for me. The main side effects were increased appetite, weight gain, and it makes me drowsy/tired within an hour or two after taking it. No complaints from me though, as I wanted to put on a good 10 pounds or so (I was 145-150 lbs before it, and now I'm 165 lbs; a good weight for my height), and I am like an insominac when I'm not on it. LOL, I would stay up allllll night and not be tired. So this is my dream pill. LOL, It helps me with my issues and I benefit from the side effects.

I took Lex for awhile after a panic attack at 3AM one morning. I had been laid off of work so I was in depression anyway. The Lex worked great. Can't say about the side effects cause I had just reached my 40s then and my libido was decreased with depression anyway.

I take lexapro 20mg (started on 10 and then bumped up) and did have the sexual side effects you mentioned (and are somewhat common on SSRIs in general). However, after a month or so I was fine and that was really the only problem I ever had. I take the lexapro at night, but I know most people take it during the day. You might need to take something for sleep though. You can try something like melatonin, valerian root, benedryl first and see if that helps (or the other countless sleep remedies) before looking at a prescription option.
