Was just discussing British Comedy with Trawler69 - and up popped the 1980s British Farce comedy show - "Allo, Allo" set in wartime France.

The writers filled the show with outlandish stereotypes which was such a hit with the British audience (and indeed in France) that the show ran from 1982-1992.

One of the most outrageous characters was that of Lieutenant Gruber - and his unrequieted love for Rene - a humble cafe owner who was constantly getting involved with the dire plots of 'Le resistance' (played by Gordan Kaye who is gay in real life)

So - D'you find Lt. Gruber funny or offensive?

We have the great fortune of having "British Comedies" replayed for us on Public Television, so I'm familiar with Allo, Allo, though I don't think that's that same name as presented over here.

I always thought the idea of a "Gay" Nazi was pretty funny, and ironic, and feel that the writers of that show wanted to capitalize on the irony of that! :D

I did watch the show on PBS (and it was called "'alllo, 'allo" here as well.) I thought it was kind of cool that they had a gay character. I wonder what happened to the "Madonna with the big boobies" picture?

If you didn't see the reunion episode of 1992 yet - I won't spoil the surprise for you ;)
I don't think it'll be shown. PBS never shows one-off reunion or Christmas specials of Brittish shows. So what happened?

funny of course anybody who dosent find it funny is a communist

;)

Hey, I'm a commie ...but then, to be fair, I don't find 'Allo Allo' remotely funny, just a bit pathetic; like virtually all other Britcoms (especially the shite from the 70s).

^^You need to embrace your inner Mrs. Slocombe. And I am unanimous in that!

One of the classic BritComs. I love most of them because they dont worry about being "politcally correct" all the time. Allo'Allo' offended everyone, gays, married straights, Frenchmen, Brits, and even took a few swats at the Yanks.

I think that is how they get away with it, if you take the piss out of everybody then nobody can feel singled out for special attention. It is reassuring to see that that appears to still hold true. I have moments when I wonder if some of us maybe take ourselves too seriously as Gays to our detriment in the view of society.

OMG I used to watch it when I was a little kid on PBS here in the states. LoL I never really realized that anyone else ever saw the show, I know none of my friends ever did. I remember I was probably between 8yo-12yo when it was showing over here. I remember getting really turned on by the French waitress who always wanted Rene' and also being intrigued by Lt. Gruber. I later felt stronger ties to Gruber as I watched it over a couple of years.

It hasn't been shown here in more then 10-15 years and I live in the NY area. So I doubt we'll ever get the reunion special. So what ever happened to "The Lady Maddona, with the big boobies"? Was it still hidden in Rene's sausage/salami?

Not offensive, but not really funny either. Maybe I need to see more of the show. I can think of other British shows I like better. Maybe it was funny to audiences in the 70s, but I don't think it has lasting appeal.

I seem to remember usually finding it quite funny. Obviously the stereotypes are a bit blatant.

I heard that it was quite popular in Germany as it showed the Nazis as buffoons rather than bastards.

Anyway, Gordon Kaye ws in Jabberwocky so I'll hear not a word agin him.

I do! As much as I love "Are You Being Served" and "Keeping up Appearances", I've never been able to enjoy "Allo! Allo!". Don't really know why....

A PBS (Public Broadcasting System) station in Mississippi just recently begain airing the episodes here... It took me awhile to "get into" them... The humor is different from some of the other BritComs I'm familiar with. I remember Gordon Kaye from the episode he appeared in on "Are You Being Served" when he filmed the commercial for the store.
