hey guys, sorry if this has already been posted, i don't know how to search.

So after spending over $600 in the iTunes store, I decided enough was enough and downloaded limewire. I think ive done my fair share, right? While I do not completely agree with the idea, I think I have contributed enough, that I deserve some free music.

So far, it has been working great, I am not sure if it going to slow my computer down, or give me viruses, we will just have to see. I am on a mac, so maybe that will make a difference, who knows?

Anyone else still buy all their music? 99% of the people I know download it for free, which I personally think is wrong, but each to his own.

1. You spent $600 on music, but you got $600 worth of music
2. Because you think you recieved your fair share, doesn't mean music companys feel the same way.
3. Its illigal, if you think its wrong then don't do it.

My advice would be not to post illigal activity on public forums lol...

Personally i've never tryed Limewire

I used to download free, but now I've grown up and buy all of my music; whether it be through downloading from iTunes or purchasing CD's.

I've used Limewire a lot, and every time has been with a guilty conscious. But I justify this by always going to iTunes first to see if I can buy the music (each time I can't because I'm looking for old or obscure music which iTunes doesn't have).

For example, I had somehow lost album, Two Rooms, when I changed from PC to Mac. I was able to buy all but two of the tracks and no matter how I searched, they just weren't there.

Two mins later, I had the tracks from Limewire and the album is complete. I wasn't about to go out and repurchase the CD again just to get 2 tracks.

So I use it, I don't condone my behaviour or anyone else's, but it's there and available.

Ahh limewire .. the p2p client run by a commercial company, on a network with up to 30% malware (number from 2008). hey it even had an apple exploit!

yeah when I was a broke student I downloaded a lot of music but now I buy it. It's quicker and my time is worth more now than it would take to download it from limewire.

Oh yeah, do you remember it would take about 15 minutes (maybe longer) for one song???

In Limewire... at least, I had some of those kind of downloads - mind you, I was most likely looking at some unpopular music however.

If you are in Canada, you are not breaking any laws d/l music with limewire. That said I have a vast collection of CD's but I will occasionally get the odd thing from Limewire. You can set it to limit bandwidth uploading and downloading so no worries about your Mac grinding to a halt. i wouldn't be overly concerned re FUD on trojans etc on the Mac, but use your brain. YMMV.

You can actually find anything worth listening to on LimeWire? I kicked that in the head years ago and now grab hours of audio streams with Audion. If you holmes out on the Panic site, they list the serial number to open it up for full functionality, since it's freeware now.

If you DO decide to play with videos you get on the flesharing network and hit one that insists on installing a codec, -don't- as it's probably bogus.
If you install Perian 1.1.4 and the latest Flip-4-Mac and VLC (for the matroska files) you'll have everything there is available for the Mac.

I disagree. Than again I have downloaded ISO's, roms, and some other stuff. But regardless to the point.

$600 in iTunes wow. That's a hell of a lot of money. I think the percentage is more 95%

I look for special offers or promotions such as "Toyota Music Tuesday" where the site, artist, or company gives away a free song from someone. That's all I download in terms of music from the music industry. I will admit I've bought a single or two from iTunes from time to time in anticipation for a new album or because I feel the album itself sucks except for one song.

I generally buy CD's from Best Buy. I've spent probably over 2,000 CD's in the 4 years.

I talked to my Sir about it recently and said how I feel odd sometimes that I am one of the very few people who still buy's music and doesn't download it for free (illegally) and how it does cost me. My Sir recommends that I sell some old CD's to get some new ones but I really do like my cd's and I like having the physical copy. Even though times are hard I still will try to save up money to buy a new CD. I don't buy CD's nearly as much as I used to though.

I do sometimes use torrents to download music. The only reason for that though is to get bonus tracks, b-sides, or covers that sometimes appear on re-released or special edition CD's. I already paid for the original CD. Why should I pay the full price again just to get a freaking b-side or bonus track or hidden track?

Now sometimes iTunes does have the bonus songs or b-sides on there and if they are on there I purchase them. But most of the time they don't.

Back to the limewire thing I did download it a while back to see if it worked and it does work pretty good. I think faster than the PC version. Still I just don't like limewire. They do have a torrent extractor in the software now. But I much prefer transmission for torrents.

I got pissed when they raised the price up to 1.29 for a popular song. I'm too poor for that I'm in college and I download music a lot so I just don't bother going to iTunes anymore.

Can I ask an opinion?

I have three PC programs (Audacity, Freecorder and Mp3MyMp3) which can record off my sound card. I often record music streams from internet radio and save them, and then transfer them to a portable mp3 player or to my flashstick so I can play them on my car stereo when I take a long drive.

When I tire of the selections (each well over an hour long), I simply delete or record new streams over them.

But, *sometimes* there is a song in the collection which I really like, and I use a sound editor to extract and copy that song alone into a WAV or MP3, and burn it to a CD.

I don't think this is illegal, though the moral implications might be the same as illegal downloading. There is NO way that the RIAA could detect what I am doing whatever internet sleuth system they might use.

But....

Does anyone think this might be ... wrong? #-o

I mean....am I only "partly" pregnant? :(

The reason for that is because the music labels are assholes. iTunes originally wanted to be DRM free but if they did that than the music labels wanted more money.

Seeing as how iTunes was one of the last to still be DRM I guess that iTunes decided that by doing a "split price" of 79 cents, 99 cents, and 1.29 that the labels could choose either of the prices and by doing so every song on iTunes could become DRM free and iTunes Plus quality.

iTunes Plus actually seems to have improved.

The music labels have tried to do the same to youtube. I think Warner and EMI pulled off tons of Music Videos and muted the sound for some songs. They will only stop deleting and unmuting the videos once youtube decides to start having people PAY to use youtube.

So I say a giant "FUCK YOU" To Warner Music Group. I hate what they have become. Even though games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band have had a huge impact on the music industry for the good the president of something of WMG feels that they need "more money" and that it's not enough.

I really am interested in the iTunes LP thing. I might get one of those for one of the new albums coming out.

And as for ripping music or audio files out of stuff downloaded on the internet.

I feel that if there is no way to download a live version, acoustic, or alternate version of a particular song than why not. If you can't buy it on a CD or can't pay for it in any way than eh.

Those programs become VERY useful for live concert dvd's ;O

This is akin to taping a radio broadcast. I guess it's technically illegal, but not something you should lose sleep over.

I mean, who hasn't made a mix tape off the radio before? Oh, how I miss my childhood...

Here this is legal, because you pay fees for radio that cover that. But I doubt that this is the same in the US ...

Do it anyway because if it isn't illegal today, it will be tomorrow. The RIAA tends to get all bent out of shape if it feels someone is getting something for nothing. It's not illegal in Canada! either Corny and the musicians get their cut.
Perhaps Obama needs to *fix* the situation after he fixes health care, the financial greedmonsters and the inefficient auto sector. Carting some 11 y/o kid off to jail and slapping a $150,000 judgement sounds like an odious and untenable system.:soapbox:
