Linux Mint

I just started using this OS last week. I've been using Windows exclusively my entire life. Up until today I was getting pretty frusterated with Linux, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of things. I like that it's free, it's secure and it's fast. I recommend it to anyone willing to learn. You can even download a live cd from their website and run it on your pc just to test things out. I had no problems with drivers or anything.

I installed it on my parents pc too since they can't seem to stop downloading malware with windows. So, I guess it's good for that too.

Anyone else use linux? I'm interested in learning different distros once I get the hang of this one. I don't know a lot of about them though.

I currently use Linux Mint (9.0 - Isadora) actually, and dual boot it with Win 7 - still need some programs that are Windows only for grad school.

Once I get out of grad school and when I know programming code, I'll switch over fully.

If you like funky candy colors .. try ubuntu other than that, what is important is that it works on your system without any problems. But most distros are quite good at that for now. Once you become more familiar with the quirks of linux, you might want to change to one where it is easier to tinker around with settings and adapt it more to your personal preferences. that being said, imho mint is a real good start.

And if your parents only use their machine for some webbrowsing and e-mail .. best way for you to have a careless life from now on.

This couldn't be more true. I build them a computer, buy them a monitor and printer, install avg, malwarebytes, spybot, everything I can. They still find a way to get malware/virii to take over their computer. It's unbelievable. Now they have linux mint with the firewall enable and nod32 running. And I realize that it's overkill with the nod32, but I really wouldn't put it past my parents to find a way to completely mess up the OS.

im using linux mint 12 (lisa) i love linux mint, although i always use the bash or terminal i dont like the new version of gnome that it uses

I recomend linux mint, specialy for parents!!

Btw Mint is Ubuntu.

Not saying you're wrong, but a better and truer statement would be that Linux mint is based on Ubuntu. It's like Ubuntu's near-identical twin, but with a twist.

Well, I went and installed Ubuntu on my laptop. And I did that with no issue. Then I tried to install Fedora so that I could dual boot it. I think I did something wrong. Fedora froze when I first started it up. Maybe I should try to install Fedora first then install Ubuntu. IDK. I really don't know what the difference is between this distros anyway.

I never could get Mint to work properly with my HD setup. One is SATA, the older one IDE, and it kept switching labels/UUIDs at every boot, which translates to my computer only booting every second attempt.

I eventually got fed up with the debian/ubuntu family of bloatware. I can just as well install the latest XFCE d.e. and VLC player on arch, without my CPU fan going 30 knots.
