Little known facts

Yep! Galaxy is likely more likely. ..|

Actually, I was wondering when we had determined the boundaries of The Universe in order to know how many stars there are. I mean, if Voyager is in the Delta quadrant ...

There seems to be a point with numbers where the human brain hits its limits. For example, today it's quite common for congress critters, etc., to speak in trillions. However, how many of us have a valid concept of just how much that is? It is said that the 20yr. war in Afghanistan cost us (roughly) 2 trillion dollars. That's $273.97 MILLION per DAY for 20 YEARS!

Might I suggest the term 'observable universe'?

It is conjectured that there are galaxies beyond our observable universe which are so far away that their light doesn't reach us.

I believe the new "Webb Telescope" is literally looking into that. https://www.jwst.nasa.gov/

The easternmost point of mainland Brazil is closer to Africa than to the westernmost point of the country.

Crazier still, the northernmost point of Brazil is farther away from its southernmost point than from ANY other country in the Americas. I repeat: the northernmost point in Brazil is closer to Canada than to the southernmost point in Brazil.

^ The southernmost point of Canada is further south than the northernmost point of California.

And, Texarkana, Texas is closer to Chicago, Illinois than it is to El Paso, Texas (793 miles vs. 812 miles) ;)

The distance from St. John's, Newfoundland to Vancouver, British Columbia, is 5,022 km (3,121 miles).

The distance from St. John's, Newfoundland to London, England, is 3,749 km (2,330 miles).

It took Leonardo da Vinci 12 years to paint Mona Lisa's lips.

I heard that once before. Unfortunately....

"There is no evidence to show that Leonardo da Vinci spent 12 years painting the Mona Lisa smile. Most scholars believe that he painted the painting in 4 years but then had the painting much longer in his possession. He could have worked on it a bit or adjusted it when he had it in his possession, but there is no evidence to show that. "

https://anitalouiseart.com/12-years-leonardo-painted-mona-lisas-lips-facts-or-fiction/

Part of the problem is that he moved before finishing the portrait and it sat unworked on for several years. Ultimately we don't know how long it took for any part of the painting -- so it might have taken him that long if we think of him pondering and perhaps adjusting the lips.

What's really interesting is that Leonardo himself painted a duplicate, and there are indications that rather than being a copy it was his "test bed" where he worked on the incredibly detailed technique used in the final version. That technique itself explains why it took so long to paint the Mona Lisa: it consists of layer upon layer of very thin brush strokes of color which combine to give the final result (it's got a technical name I don't remember).

For way-out claims about the painting, there are some experts who claim that the look of the lips as we see them is not what Leonardo originally painted, because some shifting of pigments has occurred, the evidence for which is that we know she originally had eyebrows and eyelashes both but those are not visible now.

At any rate, even if it took "only" four years to paint the lips and not twelve, it's pretty astounding! Nice one.

Let's just say "it took Leonardo twelve years to give the last touch to the lips of his Gioconda" (I think the Gioconda-Mona Lisa literature actually refers to the Belle Ferronière, the ferronière itself and the hair over the ear being a clumsy later addition, but that's beside the point now).
Or, if you prefer it that way, "Leonardo spent twelve years adding touches to the lips of the Mona Lisa."
Not implying, by any of that, that he was ever fully satisfied with his work.

It is well-attested in literature that he would never end giving finishing touches to his works, and given that this one remained in his possession until his death, he would just keep painting and varnishing it until he was not there to keep doing it anymore.

That's a good way to put it. I found scholars who argue he "only" spent three years on the lips, others say four, and other say there's o point arguing because he almost certainly kept adding touches to his work.

In Eastern Oregon and neighboring Idaho you can do Paris, Rome, Moscow, and Warsaw, in one day. Berlin is a bit father.

Well, that?...submitted, for your consideration, is a signpost in western Maine.

The only time it ever snowed in West Palm Beach, FL, on January 19, 1977, the official low temperature that morning was 34 degrees F/2 degrees C, as flurries were flying. So snow falling at temperatures slightly above freezing is probably a common occurrence.

I believe it was on the same date that there were snow flurries sighted in NASSAU. No, I do NOT mean the county in northern Florida. I mean the national capital about 200 miles southeast of you.

In other words, per capita, we 'Muricans paid WELL NORTH OF $5,000 per capita, in that war alone.

Once SpaceX has the cargo Starship in operation, that same amount of money could build a rotating space station with rings for spin-gravity matching the Moon, Mars, 0.69g, and Earth -- the 0.69g is in there because it's halfway between that of Mars and Earth and if you're making the lunar ring big enough that the spin won't make people nauseous then there's space between those two rings as well.

That would be far better than spending money to blow things up and kill people.
