When the Golden Gate Bridge was being built, the U.S. Navy wanted it painted black with yellow stripes.

And the heaviest load it has ever had was when it was packed with pedestrians on the 50th anniversary celebration in 1987.

To maintain the paint job -- which is essential to protect the steel structure including cables from the salt air -- it is painted continuously, and inspected continuously to check the paint.

Daylight Saving Time:

There is just nothing to like about this spring-forward inanity. For starters, it increases energy consumption (when it was supposed to decrease it) due to greater use of air conditioning. The changes in sleep patterns it causes contribute to heart attack, stroke, inflammation, and suicide, not to mention a 6% increase in fatal traffic accidents due to circadian scrambling and overall sleepiness. Small children and teens suffer particularly when the change in the clocks affects sleep cycles.

My a/c is set. I don't change it. Sleep patterns are solar. When it gets light enough, the dogs wake me.

But yeah, it's all BS. At least I haven't heard any of the "change the batteries in your smoke alarms" noise for a couple of years. As for the kids standing in the dark waiting for the school bus? Did that. The bus picked us up at 6:30 am. No one cared that we were on the bus for an hour and a half twice a day.

When temperatures top 120° F (49° C) rescue helicopters are grounded because hot air provides less lift to the point that flying can become impossible.

[which makes me wonder why no one has designed high-temperature rotor blades]

That's a good question.
I think a lot of the reason weather stations are at airports is because the temp of the air makes a big difference.

It's a question becoming more important as high temperatures especially in desert and arid areas are pushing that threshold.

When touring the Boeing plant in Seattle there was a presentation about fuel consumption versus air temperature and another about runway length needed for takeoff versus temperature, so I agree about weather stations.

The U.S. Space Shuttle was ended once it was calculated that it would be cheaper to throw the shuttle away after every flight and build a new one than it was to refurbish it for the next launch.

Many of the costumes on The Wizard of Oz were bought in thrift shops at the time.

The coat that Professor Marvel wore, also came from a thrift shop. During filming, somebody noticed that the previous owner had marked his name inside of the coat (on the tag, or the collar, or something). The previous owner was Frank Baum, who wrote the story!

Snopes says that’s probably a story made up for publicity but there’s no proof either way. There was supposedly a letter of authenticity made by the tailor that made the coat but it or copies of it don’t exist.
