There was probably a reason for it. I don't think it is reason to jump up and run away.

I remember when I was a kid, we hadn't seen the lady down the street for a while and we all knew her kinda well so we took a walk down to her house and the door was open, I didn't see her but I could smell it too, not pleasant.

I think she killed herself but nobody told me as I was so young.
 
So glad I don't live over there and will endeavour to make sure that I never do. Stay as safe as you can.

Just make sure there are deadbolts on the doors and peeps to see who is outside before you turn any locks.....
