Residents in neighbouring countries have similar or fewer freedoms, with a much lower average standard of living.

Amos Yee flew into Chicago and detained after it was found out that he was seeking asylum in the US. The judge agreed that he faced probable retribution and threats to his life for his political and religious views which have included being assaulted and being incarcerated for his outspoken views, and asylum was granted..
