It's like tattoos - some guys can carry it off; others look a bit stupid. A while ago I saw a man at my local shopping centre; I would guess in his 70's, with a very full head of hair and a nice beard - all grey - but he wore his hair long and tied back. And I thought he looked terrific.
I wore my own hair long and tied back in my more youthful days; now that I'm balding I keep it short, following the useful rule that the less hair you have, the shorter you should cut it. The worst possible look is older balding men trying to recapture their youth with thin straggly hair long and in a ponytail.

Long hair looks great...up until a certain age. Long hair at 30 can make you look hot and young. Long hair at 40 makes you look like an old guy trying to look hot and young.
