Alright, so this goes out to all those people with long hair or semi-long to medium length hair. I'm thinking my hair is about medium length right now, but it's longer than I have ever really had it.

How do you maintain long hair? What are your tips? Best ways to comb it? Type of products to use on it? When is a haircut needed or a trim (though this can vary with what you want....)? Anything else worth mentioning?

My family thought my hair was too long, since they're not used to seeing me with long hair, and criticized it. -_- Maybe my sides are too long and the backside near my neck or maybe not; I don't know! I'm not used to long hair. I had just taken a shower and my hair was pretty unruly....Just unsure if long hair is for me.

*ruffles hair*

I know how you feel; I just went the opposite direction. I had medium length hair, and I went to a fairly short "Caesar" cut. Even though the change was well-received, it took some getting used to - lol, a bit of a shock every time I see myself in the mirror. I made the change because I wanted something low maintenance - a "get-up-and-go" if I need to haircut. Longer hair definitely takes a little more care and time.

It's very hard to give you specific advice, because hair style is so much a matter of personal choice, and there are SO many different styles. You want something that suits your personality and lifestyle (or the ones you want to portray), as well as something that works well with the geometry of your head and your facial features, and the characteristics of your hair. My suggestion is that you look through some magazines and pick out some styles that you like and that you think would look good on you. If they're pretty simple, a little styling cream or gel and your fingers is all that's needed to shape it. If it's a more complex style where your hair needs to be cut into shape, you'll need to seek the services of a decent hair stylist who will cut it for you, and show you what product(s) to use and how to style it. A good stylist and also give you objective advice as to whether a particular style really suits you, given the characteristics of your hair and your face.

And by the way, a little "unruly" can be sexy and stylish on the right guy, just using a little styling gel to hold it in place.
My family doesn't seem to be accepting it as easily....

Yeah, I wanted to look through some magazines and such. And I guess you just show the stylist the picture and they do their best? Seems too much of a hassle to me. XD
I don't know if I want to go for the messy look, though. i don't like it on me as much.

My hairs pretty long at the moment about 5" but it's kinda like an afro with wild unruly curls, i'd love hair where you can just get up in the morning brush it down and then out the door, but no i have to wash it every single day and then use gel to get it into some kind of manageable style, it grows at an alarming rate, so i cut about 3" of it off myself every 2 months.

Oh wow, why not just cut it short, then?
I'm worried about that...>.>

You didn't say what your hair was like, straight, wavy, curly, thin thick ... My hair is 18" long and i cut it every 3 months, and it's not straight nor curly (the worst combo), so i learned how to tame it. In my experience long hair is much less maintenance than short hair:)

Bender: You should try it once!

Kat: It's pretty wavy, I suppose.
I don't even know what to do with it. Aaa! Haha.

Hi Oscar, I would guess your hair is still not long enough to be carefree when you wake up. I wash my heair every other day, don't use blow-drier and don't comb it. If I use a comb or a brush, I look like a scarecrow (that is what wavy big hair does).
I use john frieda products and my hair is not tangled, scruffy or dry. Before I leave the house I just put some finishing creme on and go through the hair with my fingers, voila.
