Lost in a Dream

All right everyone! Chapter 10 has made it to the board and I'm thrilled to death with the reception this has gotten. Thank you all very much!

Lost in a Dream, Chapter 10

“Coach,” a familiar voice said while sniffling, “what should I do?” I looked around this place, but I didn’t recognize it as it had a haze to it. It appeared to be an office, but I couldn’t make much out of it.

A second voice spoke up and said, “There’s nothing you can do, Aiden. What’s done is done.” That makes Aiden the first voice and a coach of his the second. “But, you should know that not everyone shares your father’s view.”

“Thanks coach.” Aiden said with a sniffle, “Since mom’s gone and dad’s now out of the picture, it’s just so hard to think about.”

“Aiden, there will always be people who care about you. You’re a good kid and someone special will come by and sweep up your heart.”

“I hope so coach.” He said, sniffling more, “What about the team? My dad’s little ‘tirade’ wasn’t exactly quiet...” he said, trailing off.

“Don’t worry about the team, just be yourself. If they’re going to have a problem with you being gay, then they’re going to have a problem playing. It’s as simple as that.”

For the first time in the whole sequence, Aiden smiled. And it wasn’t a fake smile, his pearly whites showed through the haze. Slowly, the haze got stronger and before long, I couldn’t see anything or anyone in the room.

----------

I woke up just before eight on Friday morning. I was confused about the ‘dream’ about Aiden, but for once, I was glad I wasn’t upset. I was happy for him, if he was in fact a real person. I’ll have to ask Kevin when I see him in Spanish. I lied in bed for a few minutes, allowing myself to wake up a little bit. I was extremely comfortable next to Brayden, as his chest made a really fine pillow.

Albeit reluctantly, I got up from bed and trudged my way to the bathroom to get the morning started. As I was in the shower, I thought about everything that had happened in the past week. A week ago, I had Jason and Kelsey as friends. I mean, I had other friends, but none meant anything like those two did. Now, though, I had Brayden, Kevin, Lukas and Evan. I couldn’t help but smile at thought of how much my life had changed in the past week, let alone the past year.

Before I knew it, it was time to go to class. Brayden still hadn’t stirred much, so I used a chair to get to face level with him and I quietly told him I was going off to class. He mumbled something that probably resembled ‘okay’, but I really didn’t have a clue if it was even English. I just laughed to myself and gave his lips a soft kiss. As I pulled away, he smiled and said, “Bye, love.” My heart melted as I walked out of the room. ‘Love?’ I thought, ‘Was that a new nickname, or was he trying to tell me something else?’

“Matt! Wait up, man!” Jason said, bringing me back to reality. “What’s on your mind?”

“A lot, Jase.” I said, “Nothing bad, though. In fact, everything is grand!” I said, all the while smiling.

“I’ll take your word for it!”

“Good!” I said, and then changed the subject, “Jase, can you believe how crazy the last week was? I mean, I never expected to have a boyfriend, drop the f-bomb twice in the same sentence, get punched in the face, get someone arrested, and meet my twin brother.”

“Well,” he said as he laughed, “when you put it like that, it has been a crazy-ass week for you! By the way,” he said, stopping as we got to his classroom, “what are you going to say to your parents?”

“Umm,” I said, thinking, “I’m not quite sure yet. I’m going to talk to Evan one of these days and see what he thinks. It’s all kind of up in the air at this point, unfortunately. We’ll get it figured out for sure, though!”

After that, I said I’d see him later and I walked off to Spanish. When I made it there, Kevin had a spot for me and I sat and we chatted as we waited for class to start. Spanish was one of my favorite subjects, so the class was always enjoyable and far from boring. Better yet, my professor was a riot.

As Kevin and I were leaving, I walked up to the professor and gave her my thanks for not mentioning my black eye in class. She just smiled and said, “Mateo, ya sé que pasó. ¡No te preocupes!”

As we walked out, Kevin leaned in and whispered, “What did she say?”

I just laughed and said, “She told me that she knew what happened and that I shouldn’t worry about it!”

“How did you know that?” he asked, “We’ve barely started past tense!”

“Languages are easy for me,” I said, “and, I took some Spanish in high school. Say, this is really a change in conversation, but when does football season start?” I asked, trying to find a way to ask about Aiden without being too blatant about it.

“First game is tomorrow at three! Are you coming?”

I smiled and said, “Well, Jason and I usually round up some people and play Ultimate Frisbee, but we could probably play in the morning! Have you found out if your starting or not this year?”

“I have, but I’m not, unfortunately.” He said, a little bummed, “But, Coach says that anything can happen and I could be if I work hard. So I am gonna be workin’ my ass off this season.” I just nodded in acknowledgement as he spoke.

“Say, Kevin?” I asked, “Is there a guy named Aiden on the football team?”

“Yeah, he’s a fag.” He said as I stopped dead in my tracks as Kevin continued, “What do you wanna know?” When he realized that I’d stopped, he turned and looked at me.

I didn’t really know what to say, but hearing him say the word ‘fag’ was like popping my happiness balloon. “Do you know him?” I said, sternly, trying to emphasize the word ‘know’.

“No, but--” He started to say but I interrupted.

“Kevin, hearing that word is like getting punched in the stomach, regardless of the intent behind it. I don’t care if everyone on the team says it about him, I can guarantee that it hurts.” I said, pausing to let him think.

“Okay, I’m sorry, Matt. How do you know about Aiden?” He asked. It was a fair question, I hadn’t ever actually met Aiden.

“A dream, Kevin.” I said, stopping to think, myself. “Can you promise me something, Kevin?” He nodded, so I continued, “Promise me that you’ll stick up for Aiden if anything ever happens.”

He looked at me a little confused, but nodded at my proposal. “All right, Matt, I promise you that I will stick up for him, no matter what.”

“Thanks, Kevin. It’ll be good for you, I’m sure of it!” I said as I remembered the coach and Aiden talking. “Say, I’m gonna surprise Evan with a visit. Wanna come with and meet him?” I asked.

“No thanks, I’ll meet him when he moves in. See ya later!” He said, and I walked to my room to drop off my backpack. When I made it to my room, I saw that Brayden was gone. I checked my phone since it was on silent, and saw that I got a text from him while I was at class. He wanted me to know that he and Lukas were going swimming and would be gone a little while. I responded and said: “Sounds good babe! I’m going to visit Evan until lunch or so!”

----------

When I made it to the clinic, I didn’t really know what Evan and I would talk about, but I didn’t care. We were brothers and had a lot of catching up to do!

When I walked into the room, Evan seemed genuinely surprised. He was sitting in one of the chairs in the room, but got up and came to greet me when he saw me. “Matt!” he said, elated, “Thanks for coming! I’m getting so bored here!” After that, he pulled me into a hug. I was a little surprised, but I returned it without question.

“I couldn’t sit around twiddling my thumbs while you were here probably bored to tears!” I said, “Besides, if we really are brothers, shouldn’t we do some catching up?”

“Yeah, we should.” Evan said, “So, about Brayden. When did you meet?”

I grinned and said, “Last Saturday! I was playing Ultimate Frisbee and took a wicked stupid dive. I zoned out for a bit and he and my best friend Jason were kneeling over me when I snapped out of it! After that, I found out he lived in the same dorm and we hit it off from there.”

“Wow! You move fast!”

“Only in that aspect, Evan. Even though we just met a week ago, we both followed our instincts and have a ton in common! That’s pretty much all there is to Brayden though. Anyone like that with you?” I asked. I thought it was fair, he’d never said anything about him and Lukas as a couple. Or anyone else, for that matter!

“Nope. There’s gotta be some guy out there for me somewhere!”

“Not just some guy, Evan. There’s someone special out there for you. I take it that means you and Lukas are just good friends?” I said, smiling.

He looked at me and grinned, “Yeah, you could say that. He’s like a brother to me, Matt. And because of that, I love him like a brother.”

Evan and I chatted for a little while before I had to go and grab something to eat before class at one. I asked if he wanted anything, but he told me that Lukas was going to bring him something. I was quite surprised to hear that he and Lukas weren’t a couple, but I believe him when he says they’re like brothers. It’s the same way I feel about Jason.

----------

The rest of the afternoon was, well, for the first time in a while, normal. Classes were incredibly boring, but I’ve learned that’s how most lectures go when the material isn’t exactly interesting. After I was done for the day, I told Jason that I wanted to go to the football game tomorrow afternoon, and he agreed that we should play Frisbee in the morning. The rest of the afternoon was spent lounging and watching TV.

At least, that was the plan until Lukas called. He wanted to know if he could borrow my Trailblazer so that he could move everything across campus in one big load. I said yes, of course, and went over to help him and Brayden pack his stuff. Fortunately, Ryan had the same plan, so they could move simultaneously without any problems. Before long, both RA’s had checked out of their former rooms and were working on the paperwork to get moved into their new rooms. Brayden and I were just sitting in the lobby waiting to help when he asked me a question. “Matt, would you be upset if I asked Lukas about him and Evan?”

I just giggled and said, “No, babe. I asked Evan about Lukas this morning! We were talking about significant others and it just sorta came up!”

“Oh! And? What did Evan say?”

“It’s all brotherly love between them. He thinks of Lukas as an older brother, much like I think of Jason.” I said, “What about Lukas? Please tell me something similar!”

“Oh yes. ‘Brothers for life,’ I believe was the way he put it.” Brayden said, smiling.

“Now we just have to find them hot dates!” I said, beaming, “Anything on that front for Lukas? Evan said there was a special guy out there for him somewhere.”

“Ya know, I didn’t think about that. I honestly don’t know! We’ll make that Evan’s job.” He said, laughing.

Just then, Gina and Lukas came down after completing their paperwork. “Alright, boys.” Lukas said, “Let’s get started! Hopefully after, we can get into Evan’s room and move some of the heavier stuff.” With that, we went out to my car and started unpacking. This whole process reminded me just how glad I am to live on first floor!

After we finished moving things into Lukas’ new room, we found Kevin and asked if he wanted to go eat. What we didn’t tell him was that afterwards, we were going to go over to Evan’s room and move the majority of his things over to his new room. Evan had already given Lukas permission to move his things, so Mark let us in and ‘supervised’ while we did all of the grunt work. While we were working, Lukas got a phone call from Evan and got the word that they were releasing him, so he went and picked him up.

Soon enough, Evan was at his new room and unpacking with Kevin. They had told us they were planning on just hanging out and getting to know each other, so we left to go watch a movie. Brayden, for some unknown reason, hadn’t yet seen Spaceballs, so we sat him down and watched the movie straight through. Thankfully, he had seen the original Star Wars series, so he understood much of the humor in the movie.

Afterwards, Jason and Lukas had left so that we could all get a decent amount of sleep before Frisbee in the morning.

Brayden and I both made our way to the bathroom to get ready for bed. There wasn’t going to be anything special tonight, as we were both quite tired and sore from all of the lifting and moving. Brayden crawled up into bed first, and I followed shortly after. We were both down to our underwear when I gave him a good night kiss and rested my head on his chest. As I closed my eyes, I could feel his arm move from above his head to around my shoulder. Man, life was truly great right now.

To be continued...

It's good to know that all is running smoothly for once. I have the feeling that Matt will possibly meet Aiden after the game. At least see who he is and verify that they are the same as his dream. Kevin still has to work on a few rough edges, but still seems willing to adjust and accept those around him. Now his protection has to include Aiden. I look forward to seeing how Matt and Evan will approach their parents. Great story, Matt.

Lost in a Dream, Chapter 11

Work it, make it, do it makes us
Harder, better, faster, stronger

“Are you serious!” I said as my eyes bolted open, “Brayden! Turn that shit off!”

N-n-now th-that don’t kill me
Can only make me stronger

At this point, I practically jumped out of bed so that I could do it myself. “You sneaky little...” I said to him as I closed the YouTube page, “I told you that I hated hearing that song! My roommate ruined the living shit out of it last year!”

Brayden laughed at me as he said, “You were right, Jason! But I win. Under ten seconds and two curses.” I, for the first time today, looked around and saw Jason was grinning from ear to ear. I couldn’t help but smile myself, but it was more of a pouting smile.

“As much as I can’t stand it, I have to admit it is a highly effective alarm clock.” I said and turned to Brayden, “But, please, for the sake of my sanity, please don’t do that again!” I really was trying to pout, but I couldn’t deny that it was pretty funny. I crossed my arms and tried my best to continue my pout, but it just couldn’t stay upset.

Frisbee was relatively uneventful this morning. I recognized some people there, but there were a few new faces too. Ronnie was back and eager to pick me after the end to last week. For once, I wasn’t underestimated and I still had a lot of fun. Brayden decided he was just going to watch (again), so it was just Jason and I that were playing. Evan and Lukas showed up after a while and sat with him while we played. Jason and I were on opposite teams and guarding each other, so I had made it my duty to bother him to the best of my ability. He caught everything that was taller than me, and frequently made a point to call me ‘Short-stuff.’ I decided it was time to take advantage of my speed, so I beat him deep a few times and called him ‘Turtle.’ By the end of the games, we were sufficiently exhausted and hungry. We walked back to the dorm to change and shower so that we go and eat.

We decided on pizza, so we picked a place that had an all-you-can-eat buffet. I didn’t always have to have pizza after playing Frisbee, but some sort of buffet was best for the wallet. The way Lukas was talking implied that he was quite interested in playing next time, but I couldn’t gauge whether or not Brayden and Evan were. Brayden said he didn’t know how to throw well, so I told him it didn’t matter but I’d teach him sometime if he wanted.

----------

Before long, we all donned our blue and gold school colors and went off to the game. We made it in time for decent spots, but we were still halfway up the stands and near the 30 yard line. Kevin had told us to watch for him as number 52, so I kept an eager eye out and patiently awaited for the game to start. When our starting line-up was announced, I saw that Aiden was number 34, so I was a little nervous to see how he would do, too. We were on the ‘home’ side of the stands, so the team generally had their backs to us.

We got the ball to start the game, and Coach immediately tried to get Aiden and our running game going. It didn’t work, as he was stuffed at the line nearly every time. I couldn’t tell if it was a good defense or a bad offense, but there was no chance we were going to win if they kept that up. I wasn’t exactly surprised that the coach switched to a more passer friendly scheme. On defense, Kevin didn’t get the start, but had come in and been in on a couple plays at the linebacker position. While our defense was out there, I noticed that there weren’t a lot of people around Aiden on the sidelines, but thought it might have been because of the lack of the running game.

When we got to half time, we were down 17-3. I was mystified by the lack of an offense, so I jumped a bit when Jason started talking. “Man, our offensive line looks like SHIT this year.” Jason said, “I don’t remember it being that bad last year.”

“Yeah,” I said, “I hope it’s just an off night for them. If it isn’t, we’re in for a long season, I’m afraid!”

The other team started with the ball in the second half since we started with it in the first. After the kickoff, I noticed Kevin run out on to the field with the defense. “Look!” I exclaimed, pointing Kevin out to the crew, “Kevin’s in! Coach must have been pissed!” The first play of the second half resulted in a massive tackle from Kevin on the opposing running back. It was such a shock to the crowd that everyone seemed to gasp in shock at the same time. In our collective stupor, we discovered that he’d caused a fumble and we’d recovered the ball. The crowd was roaring as the defense jogged to the sidelines. I saw the coach go over to Kevin and smack his helmet. I assumed it was a good thing, but I couldn’t tell from our distance.

I really didn’t know momentum was such a huge factor in football, but discovered it’s impact with the first play of the offense after the fumble recovery. Aiden got the ball and finally had some good blocking. It wasn’t a touchdown, but he had accumulated more yards on that run than he had in the entire first half. Thankfully, it wasn’t a fluke, as he followed that up with a long touchdown run. The crowd was elated that we’d actually looked good, and you could tell all of the momentum was on the home team’s side.

I don’t know what caused the change in the second half, but Kevin stayed in every play on defense and Aiden had an absurd second half. It was honestly like watching two different teams play in the same uniforms. Our school had pulled off the win 31-17, and everyone was generally psyched about the way the game finished. I was extremely curious about what caused the change like everyone else, so I decided to stick around and catch Kevin as he left. Nobody else wanted to stay any longer, so they all left to go back to the dorm.

----------

It took a while for Kevin to show up, but eventually he came out in street clothes and a smile. When I saw him, I yelled his name and waved. He walked over and said, “Matt! Glad to see you came!”

“So did everyone else, but I just had to ask what the heck changed at half. So, what the heck happened at halftime?” I said as he came closer.

“I took your advice! That’s all I’m going to say about it for now, though.”

“Well, good! Does that second half make you a starter?”

“It does, and it’s thanks to you!” Kevin said, grinning from ear to ear.

“Thanks to me?!” I asked, befuddled. “What on earth did I do?”

“You’ve made me re-think everything, Matt. I spoke to the team at half and Coach heard it. And speaking of Coach, he wants to talk to you sometime.”

“Wait, what? Why?”

“Not sure, but he said he wanted to know who was responsible for the change in perspective, so I told him it was all you.” Kevin said, patting me on the back.

“Oh, well, I’m glad I helped, I guess!” I said, still a bit confused about the whole thing.

“Oh! Speaking of Coach...” Kevin said and then turned away and yelled, “Coach!” The Coach looked around and then noticed Kevin waving at him. He started walking our way and Kevin continued, “Coach, this is Matt. He’s the one!” After that, Kevin saw someone else and walked away, saying, “Sorry, Matt, we’ll talk another time. A couple of the guys are taking me out to dinner for tonight. I’ll come find you later!” He said as he walked away in the distance.

When I looked back to the coach, he was just close enough to extend a handshake to me. I returned it feverishly as he said, “I don’t know how you did it, but you’ve unlocked a star. Come with me, I have to tell you something.” Coach said as he lead me to an office.

When we made it to his office, I looked around and noticed some of the same things as were in the hazy dream. “I don’t know what you said to him, but I owe you a lot of thanks.” Coach said, offering me a seat. To be honest, that’s not the reason why I wanted to meet you, though.” He said as his smile faded. “As you probably noticed, that was one of the worst and most embarrassing first-half performances I’ve ever witnessed. I had all of the coaches here in my office and we were about to discuss what had just happened when we heard some shouting.” Coach said as I looked on intently, “I paused our meeting so I could hear what was going on, and heard one of the single most disturbing sentences I have ever heard at halftime. ‘The defense’s fault? Maybe we wouldn’t have spent so much time out there if that faggot would learn to run.’”

I stared at the coach, mouth agape and appalled, as he continued, “I was seething enough that I was just about to say something when Kevin spoke up. I may never forget what he said. ‘What? What fucking difference does it make who he loves? He’s the same person who sweats with us every day. He’s the same person that lead us in rushing last year. He’s the same fucking person you guys trusted our offense with last year. What damn difference does it make?’ He was staring at everyone, waiting for someone to challenge, so I spoke up and said, ‘That’s how you earn a starting spot on my team. Sticking up for your teammates when it matters. I don’t know how the second half is going to go, but I expect each and every one of you to play to the best of your ability.’” The coach said, “After that, I benched Derrick for his remarks and sent the team off to start the second half.”

“Wow!” was all I could say. I was so proud of Kevin and so happy for what he had done.

“So, Matt, that’s why you’re here and that’s why I’m thanking you. And I really mean that. Kevin has definitely earned that starting spot.”

----------

Before long, I was back to the dorm and extraordinarily proud of Kevin. I invited the crew to my room and the five of us picked a movie to watch. I told them what took me so long, and they were all thoroughly impressed with Kevin and very happy for what he’d done. While that was playing, someone’s phone started going off.

Work it, make it, do it makes us
Harder, better, faster, stronger

“Oh my GOD!” I said, feeling it was my phone vibrating and making that racket, “You guys seriously didn’t do that, did you?” I looked at Brayden and Jason and they were both giggling like children.

N-n-now th-that don’t kill me
Can only make me stronger
I need you to hurry up now
‘cause I can’t wait much longer

“Hey Kevin! What’s going on?” I said after seeing his name on the caller ID and silencing that awful ringtone. I got up and walked out to the hall so I wouldn’t disturb the movie they were watching in my room.

“Matt! The team’s having a party tonight, do ya wanna come?” He said, putting me on the spot. I’d never been invited to a party like that before, but, I honestly didn’t like the idea of getting plastered in a room full of strangers.

“I appreciate the invite, Kevin, but I’m watching a movie with Jase, Lukas, Evan and Brayden toni--”

“Have them come too!” He said, interrupting me.

“Lemme ask, hang on a second,” I said as I walked into the room and put the phone on my shoulder. “Guys, do you wanna go to a party with Kevin and the football team?” I asked as I shook my head back and forth. Thankfully, they gave me a resounding no. I hope it wasn’t just my influence, but I was glad I didn’t have to go. “Sorry Kevin, but I think you heard their answer. Maybe some other time when we don’t have plans.”

“Aww come on!” Kevin said, pleading.

“The answer’s no! But, please call me if you need a ride back to the dorm. Don’t do anything stupid.”

“Yes, dad.” Kevin said, sarcastically.

“I just gotta look out for the star linebacker, don’t blame me! Seriously though, call me if you need me to pick you up. I’ll be awake a while tonight.”

“Okay, I will.” Kevin said, hanging up. I walked back in to the room with my phone in my hands and sat down.

“Well, it’s probably going to be a long night. I just hope he doesn’t do anything stupid.” I said, going to the settings in my phone, “And on top of that, I have to pretend to be mad at Brayden and Jason tonight.” They were still in the room, but I was going to do my best to ignore them for a while. It was going to be hard, because they were sitting on both sides of me. “Speaking of those two, where did they go?”

It seemed like Evan was willing to play along, but I didn’t know if Lukas would. “They were just here a minute ago, I swear!” Evan said. I wasn’t actually mad at the boys, just ‘playfully’ mad, if that was possible.

After the movie had ended, Brayden sat on my lap facing me and plopped a sloppy kiss on my mouth. I did my best not to react, but I did squirm a little bit inside trying not to kiss him back. “Hey Lukas, did I ever tell you this place was haunted?” He looked at me with a sly grin on his face and I continued, “Yeah, I’m pretty sure the ghost is in here now. There was just a sudden weight on my legs and then my lips got all wet.”

Brayden was staring at me with a sly grin of his own as he pulled off his shirt. He sat back down next to me and continued watching the movie. I felt his arm go around my shoulder and I really couldn’t resist anymore. “Okay, fine, you win this time, Brayden.” I said as I rested my head against his chest.

It was about 11:00 when the first movie ended, so I said I was going to stay up for another. Everybody was going to stay, so we decided to watch American Gangster. Jason owned it, so he went and got it while the rest of us got settled. It was about two and a half hours long, so that would pass plenty of time before I expected Kevin to call.

By the time the movie had finished, I still hadn’t heard from Kevin. I wasn’t terribly surprised, but it was getting closer and closer to 2:00. I could tell Evan was getting tired, but I think he wanted to witness Kevin drunk. I think we all did. I figured Lukas and Jason wanted to stay up just to be sure everything was going to be okay (since they’re RA’s). We talked until about 2:20 when my phone started ringing. Thank goodness I wasn’t hearing Stronger by Kanye West. I answered, and a very drunk and slurring Kevin was telling me it was time to pick him up because he’s drunk. After he gave me the address, I turned to the guys and said, “All right, here we go. I’ll call you guys if I need help or anything.” I said as I left.

When I pulled up to the address, Kevin was sitting on the steps with another guy. The other guy was shorter than Kevin, had short blond hair, and tanned skin. I saw the guy get up and start trying to pull Kevin to his feet, so I got out and tried to help him. I just laughed when I approached and said, “Man, he is plastered, isn’t he?”

“Ohhhhh yeah. He needs to set limits. I’m Aiden by the way.” Aiden said, extending his hand and smiling. It almost seemed like he had a twinkle in his eye as he looked at me.

I graciously accepted and said, “Nice to meet you, Aiden, I’m Matt.” I said, “Thanks for helping out, do you need a ride too?” I put my arm around the other side of Kevin and pulled his arm over my shoulder so we could start to get him in the car.

“Yeah, that’d be good. I didn’t drink nearly as much as him and I haven’t had anything in the past hour or so, but I don’t want to do something stupid this close to the end of the night.” He said, laughing, “And Kevin said he’s got a futon that I can crash on, so I can stay in his room.” I thought for a minute and just shook my head. As he was saying this, his hand had fallen further down Kevin’s back and was resting right up against mine when I opened the car door.

“Sorry to burst your bubble, but Kevin doesn’t have that futon anymore. That was his old roommates.” I said as we got Kevin situated in the back seat. Aiden frowned as I assumed he thought of his next move. “But, fortunately,” I said, continuing, “his old roommate is my new one, so you could still crash on that futon if you want.”

“That,” he said, pausing, “would be awesome.” Right before I drove away, I saw that Kevin had slumped to his side and appeared to be sleeping. The house they had partied at wasn’t far away, but it was easily a ten minute drive to campus. When we hit the first stoplight, I looked over at Aiden and smiled, and he smiled back. ‘Shit.’ I thought. ‘I hope he doesn’t think I’m hitting on him in any way.’

“You have gorgeous eyes, you know that?” He said adoringly. I just smiled weakly and tried to be nice.

“Um, I appreciate it, Aiden, but--” I said as I got interrupted.

“You’re not gay. Damn it!” He said, dejected, “I always fucking pick the straight ones.”

“No, actually, I am gay.” I said as I pulled up to the dorm. “But, my boyfriend already has my heart, Aiden.”

“Oh,” He said depressively, “uh, sorry about that. I guess I’m glad I didn’t try to kiss you!”

“I hope we can still be friends, Aiden. You didn’t do anything that would make you uncomfortable to be around! Besides, there’s someone out there for you, I know it!” I said as I patted his shoulder. And then, I remembered something. “Actually,” I said with a smile, “I have a friend who you might be interested in!” With that, I called Jason and Evan to ask for some help with Kevin. I figured we’d have to carry him, but I didn’t know what to do about three flights of stairs.

“What floor was Kevin on?” Aiden asked as we waited outside for our backup.

“Third. I don’t know how we’re going to get him up the stairs. Even with four of us, that’s 200 plus pounds of dead weight.” As I said that, Jason came outside and I introduced him to Aiden.

“He’s out cold, Jason. Three flights of stairs are going to be tough.” He just nodded and turned around when Evan came outside. It sounded like Aiden gasped, but I couldn’t tell. I turned to him and said, “Aiden, I’d like you to meet Kevin’s roommate, Evan. Evan,” I said, looking towards Evan, “this is Aiden, one of Kevin’s football buddies. He needed a place to crash, so Kevin offered him the futon in your room.”

“Matt, there’s no futon in my room.” Evan said as I giggled.

“I know that! But, I haven’t the faintest idea how we’re going to get Kevin up the stairs without a pulley system, so I think it’d be better if Aiden just took his bed and Kevin took the futon in my room. If you’re okay with that, that is!”

“Yeah, that’s fine!”

“Good, thanks Ev! You’re a savior tonight!” I said as we decided on a way to get Kevin to my room. Aiden said he’d handle his upper body by holding him under his armpits. Jason said he’d take the legs, so that left Evan and I to balance out his waist and legs. Eventually, we got him all the way to my room and into the futon. Brayden was in bed but not asleep, so I introduced him to Aiden as Jason left to go to bed. Evan said he was going to use the bathroom quick, so I took my chance to talk to Aiden. “Aiden, Evan got the shit kicked out of him earlier this week, so please don’t do anything that would cause him to freak out.”

“Matt, you don’t have to worry about me. I’m a softy at heart! Oh, and thanks for telling me he’s your twin!” Aiden said as he smiled.

I grinned from ear to ear and said, “Surprise!” Just then, Evan returned and said he was going to head up to bed, so Aiden followed. I said good night to them and then got myself ready for bed. Right before I got into bed, I grabbed the trash can and put it by Kevin’s head, just in case he couldn’t hold his alcohol.

“Are you trying to hook him up with Evan?” Brayden asked quietly.

“Yeah,” I whispered, “he was flirting with me, so I told him that my heart was already taken. Then, he seemed dejected, so I said I knew someone that he might like. I just didn’t tell him that ‘someone’ was my twin and that I was sure he would like him!” I gave him a goodnight kiss as I nestled into the bed and cuddled up against him. I hadn’t felt it until now, but I was flat out exhausted. At least that meant I’d sleep like a rock!

Yea anotherr great chapter, you are spoilng us :)

Matt, you are awesome. Tying all the loose ends up and finding a bf for Evan. However, that still leaves Kevin for me.......................I haven't lost hope in that regard. lol I wonder what Coach would have thought had Matt told him of the dream. I'd love to be there in the morning when Kevin wakes up in an entirely different room and with a gargantuan headache. Keep going, I'm sure there will be many more delightful new faces to meet.

There are still plenty of loose ends to tie up! It's about to get a whole lot more interesting, that's for sure.

A great couple of chapters, the only downside is now I have Stronger by Kanye West stuck in my head.

Sorry! That actually was my roommate's alarm clock my Freshmen year of college. He never woke up instantly to it, either. Probably could have had an ancient gong go off by his head and not wake him now that I think of it...

Anyway, thanks for the comments! I'm here with chapter 12! I hope you all enjoy it!

Lost in a Dream, Chapter 12

I woke up Sunday morning in the arms of my beautiful boyfriend, Brayden. He was already awake, smiling at me when my eyes met his. I smiled in return and he said softly, “You know you’re really cute when you sleep, right?”

I felt a warmth rush to my cheeks at the compliment and whispered, “I’m just so happy in your arms!”

“You’re cute when you blush, too,” He started, still quiet, “and when you smile. You’ve got this one dimple that makes you look adorable!”

I just giggled and heard a groan from in the room. I must have had a sudden look of panic cross my face, because Brayden looked at me and said, “Shh, it’s okay. It’s just Kevin on the futon.”

“Fuuuuck!” Kevin said from below. “Where am I?” He asked softly. I took that opportunity to climb down from bed.

“Good morning, sunshine!” I said, “We had to bring you here last night, because there was no way we were getting you upstairs without someone getting hurt.” Brayden climbed out of bed, too, and then we left to go to the bathroom.

“Ugh,” he said when we came back, groaning and holding his head between his head and sitting up on the futon, “thanks for everything last night. Was I trouble?” He asked, concerned.

“No, not in the least. Only trouble was how much bigger you were than the rest of us. Good thing for Aiden, though. would have been a struggle without another football player there!”

“Aiden was with you guys?” He asked, confused.

“No, he was with you. And you promised him Brayden’s futon to sleep on.”

“Shit. Where did he end up?” Kevin asked, concerned.

I grinned and said, “Where you were supposed to be, of course!”

“Oh?” Kevin said, “Well, I’m going to go bury my head in darkness for the rest of the day. I’ll see you guys later if it goes away.”

Brayden laughed and said, “Just take some painkillers and drink as much water as you can! You’ll live!”

----------

“Oh my gosh!” I said as a surprise hit me, “Brayden! We don’t have class tomorrow!”

“No shit, Sherlock,” Jason said as he, Brayden, Kelsey, and I sat on the futon in his room, “Did you seriously forget about a three-day weekend?”

“After that week? Yes!” I said, “I really didn’t look ahead at all.”

“Well, tomorrow is the first Monday in September, wasn’t that enough of a warning flag to you?” Kelsey said, laughing.

“Quit makin’ fun of me!” I said, pouting, “I really didn’t realize it!”

We continued bantering back and forth until we heard a knock coming from across the hall. I leaned forward and saw Lukas was standing at my door and said, “Lukas! We’re hangin’ out over here for a little while.”

Lukas walked over to Jason’s room and smiled before saying, “Did you guys know Aiden just left Evan and Kevin’s room, grinning like a fool?”

I smiled to myself as I heard Kelsey say, “Aiden? Aiden who?”

“The football stud.” He said to her before looking at me. He peered at me as he awaited a response. “Well, Matt? You’re grinning like a fool, too! What do you know?!” He begged.

“You know I was Kevin’s driver last night, right?” I said as he nodded, “Well, Aiden was with him when I picked him up. Kevin had promised him the futon that’s no longer in his room, so I said he could still stay on it since it was in my room.”

“Okay, so, why was he in Evan’s room?” He asked impatiently.

“I’m getting to that, hold your horses!” I said, “Kevin was completely out of it and we had little chance of getting him up the stairs in one piece. Evan happened to be down there and agreed that Aiden could stay in Kevin’s bed.”

Lukas chuckled and said, “So that’s why Kevin’s up in my room clutching his forehead. Why was Aiden grinning earlier? Do you know?”

“I don’t ‘know’, per say, but I have a feeling.” I said, thinking back to last night, “He hit on me last night, but I told him that Brayden already had my heart. I also said that I knew someone he might like, and that happened to be when Evan came out and said he could sleep up in Kevin’s bed.” I smiled, and then thought back to his comment about Kevin, “Wait, why is Kevin in your room?” I asked, confused.

“He didn’t say!” He seemed to be satisfied with the answers, so he thanked me for the information and walked out. “See ya later, guys!”

Kelsey almost immediately turned to me and said, “Aiden hit on you?” She said, seemingly impressed.

“Yup. My heart’s already taken, though!” I said as I clutched Brayden’s hand and held it up for all to see. I looked at him and smiled and he smiled back.

-----------

Brayden and I were back in my room when I got a text from Evan. I opened my phone and saw that his message said, “:)”. That was it. I had an idea why he might be text-smiling, but one can never be sure. I responded by saying that Brayden and I were in my room if he wanted to come by.

He must have been on his way there already, because it seemed like seconds after I shut my phone when he knocked on my door and walked in. I got up to greet him and he gave me a hugged me tight and said, “Thank you, Matt!”

I looked at him and smiled as he released me, “What?! You’re acting like I got you a BMW for Christmas!”

He giggled and replied, “For Aiden, of course.”

“You agreed for him to sleep in your room, I just suggested it!”

“Yeah, well, you didn’t say he flirted with you!” He replied, quickly.

I giggled and said, “Okay, maybe I left that part out. So?”

“So what?” Evan said, grinning.

Brayden replied before I got chance, “Sew buttons on your underwear. What happened?!” He asked, impatiently.

“We talked all night.” He said, smiling, “We went to bed around five and didn’t wake up until Kevin knocked. Apparently he forgot his keys in the room, last night, by the way.”

“Smooth move, Kevin.” I muttered, shaking my head, “Anything else we should know about Aiden?”

“He’s taking me out to dinner tonight!” He said, excitedly, “And then we’re going to rent a movie and watch it. He wanted me to ask if you two if you were up for the movie, so, are you up for it?” He said and looked on, excited.

I looked to Brayden to see what he thought. I smiled to show my approval, and he nodded his head rapidly and said, “Definitely! When and where?”

“His place,” Evan said, “I’ll text you the time and address later, so keep your evening clear!”

“Roger that, captain,” I said, saluting, “we’ll be ready!”

“Oh!” Evan said, stopping before he left, “One more thing. My parents are going to be in town tomorrow. Can you join us for lunch or something?”

I was speechless. His parents? My parents? I looked for an answer out of Brayden even though he probably wouldn’t be there. He nodded and smiled at me. “I- I don’t know what I’d say.” I stammered as turned back to Evan, suddenly overcome with emotion. “Y-yes.” I said nervously.

“Fantastic! We’ll have some fun with it, too.” Evan said as a sly grin crept across his face. “They didn’t tell us about each other, after all!” Then, he told me about his plan to freak his parents out a little. I have to say, it’s nearly cruel! I’d have to practice my best poker face between now and lunch, tomorrow, though.

After Evan left, I looked at Brayden and smiled. “You know, we’ve only been on one date, and it was a meal in the school cafeteria...” I said, trailing off as I suggested the possibility of a big date.

“You’re right!” He said, “Do you wanna play dress-up and go on a proper date, then?”

“Yeah, I do,” I said as I smiled and asked, “where do you wanna go?”

“Don’t you worry about that, I’ll get it all ready! You just smile and continue to look pretty!” He said, kissing me softly on the lips.

----------

Brayden took me to the nicest restaurant in town. That wasn’t saying much since the population of the town practically doubles when school is in session, but it was still good food. I was half expecting something to happen since we were affectionate in public for the first time, but nothing came about. I happened to see that Aiden and Evan were there as well, but we decided to leave them alone. They already had their meal, so Brayden bought them a dessert for the waiter to deliver to them anonymously. I saw Evan start to look around, so I brought my attention back to Brayden and our date.

Before long, I noticed Evan and Aiden were gone and it was getting pretty quiet in the restaurant. Brayden and I had already finished our meal and dessert. He paid and we left to go back to the dorm and change. When we walked in the front door, we were holding hands and I was beaming. The girl working the front desk smiled at us and said, “Aww, you guys look so cute together!” I blushed, and Brayden smiled and thanked her. I simply couldn’t believe we were lucky enough not to run into any bigots.

Once we walked into the room, I got a text from Evan. It gave Aiden’s address and asked when we could be there. “So,” I said, looking to Brayden, “how long should I say? Fifteen minutes?”

“Nah, you could say ‘less than ten.’ We don’t have to change that much. I still want to be able to show you off!” He said as I blushed again. Damn, he’s good at that!

Aiden’s apartment was in a part of town that I’d never been to, so we had to pay extra attention to find the street he lived on. Once we found the street, we found the apartment complex and then his apartment building. Evan came to the door of the building, let us in, and then showed us to Aiden’s apartment. We all sat with our respective dates while we watched some romantic comedy. I didn’t really care what it was, I was just enjoying the company of my friends.

This evening was awesome. Aiden really seemed to care for Evan and us as his friends. I had a really good time hanging out with them, and by midnight, everyone seemed to be tiring out. Brayden suggested we hit the road, so he and I got up to leave. I didn’t know what Evan’s plan was, but it was up to him to ask if he wasn’t going to stay. As we left, they waved and told us to have a good night, so we wished the same to them.

On the way out, I had this weird feeling in my stomach. The area wasn’t very well lit and I was very glad I had a hand to hold on to. I tightened my grip and felt Brayden do the same. Once we were in my car and on our way home, Brayden said, “Man, I wouldn’t want to walk back from their alone at night.”

“Me neither, Brayden, me neither.” I said as I shook my head. “It gave me the chills!”

----------

When we walked into the dorm, it was quiet. The lights were mostly off and the front desk was already closed for the night. The hallway lights were off, too, and when we got to my door, I could see that Jason’s light was still on. When I opened my room, Jason’s door opened and he said, “Matt, your brother called.”

I immediately looked at him, confused and said, “My brother called you? Why?”

“He didn’t say why. He just said you need to call him back as soon as possible.”

“Okay,” I said, confused and concerned and pulled my phone off. “Crap, battery’s dead. How long ago did he call?” I said as I plugged my phone in.

“Not long, 15 minutes tops.” He said. The way he looked at me meant he was concerned, too.

I kept my phone plugged in and called my brother. He picked up almost instantly, saying “Matt! Where’ve you been?!”

“Sorry, Bryan, I was at a friends’ place and my phone died. What’s up?” I said, trying to maintain my composure.

“Uh.. M-Matt,” he stammered, “Mom and dad ... they w-were hit ... b-by a drunk driver.”

“What?!” I exclaimed softly as tears welled in my eyes, “A-are... Are they...” I started to say as a lump grew in my throat, “Are they going to be okay?” Tears were already falling out of my eyes and I could see the concerned look on Jason’s and Brayden’s faces.

“The doctor said they were in critical condition.” He said softly, “Matt, it’s ... it’s not looking good.”

“Bryan,” I started as I sniffled and took a big gulp, “I’ll be there in 45 minutes. I-Is...” I started, but couldn’t finish without taking a deep breath. “Is that going to be enough time?”

“I-I don’t know.” He said as he took a deep breath, “B-be careful, Matt! I love you.” That’s something he’d never said to me.

“Bryan, I’ll be extra careful. I love you too.” I said as I sniffled and hung up. To be fair, I hadn’t said it much to him. We never got along the greatest as kids, but we were still brothers.

I immediately found the phone charger for my car in my desk and started to put my shoes on when Brayden spoke up. “Matt, I’m so sorry.” He said as he pulled me into a tight hug, “I’ll take you. I can’t let you drive by yourself like this.”

Before we left, Jason stopped us and pulled me into a bear hug of his own. “Matt, I can’t even imagine, but please be strong for them. Take care of yourself!” He said as he released me and Brayden to leave. I felt bad for not saying anything, but I think he understood that I wouldn’t have been able to say much. I waved good bye, and Brayden and I started the longest 45-minutes of my life.

This is incredible!! I just started reading this story a 1/2 hour ago and couldn't believe I'd reached the end so far! I'm gutted! I'm dying here waiting for more! I love this!! :=D:

I just really wanna know if Brayden & Matt stay together! Arghh:luv2:

Wow, Matt. I didn't see that coming, but you did say there were other loose ends. This is going to be a very difficult time for Matt and for Brayden. I would hope that Matt's parents would be OK, however, something tells me otherwise. Possibly the mystery of Matt and Evan will be revealed. Emotions are running wild with this chapter. And, with this cliffhanger, I hope you don't take too long to get back to us. Thanks, Matt.

I had that chapter built up for so much good that it was really hard to have to do something like that. But it felt important to push something hard in to Matt's life (pun intended? ;)) that he didn't have a dream to rely on. After I wrote that last scene, I honestly didn't know where it would lead right away. I contemplated a few different scenarios, so what you'll read in this chapter wasn't the only possibility.

WOW! Really good chapter!! ;)

Thanks!

Awesome chapter until the end. Got my fingers crossed.

Me too!

Alright, I've (finally) got the next chapter written. It is easily the longest chapter I've written yet, and I'm quite happy with how it turned out. There's a little bit of a lot of emotions in it, so I hope you enjoy! The bonus of the chapter is the subtle reference to a line in Coach Carter if anyone can find it. (Don't worry, nothing to do with basketball!) SO! Without further delay, I bring you CHAPTER 13!

Lost in a Dream, Chapter 13

Brayden and I had been on the road about a half hour before I had the courage to say anything comprehensible. “Brayden, September’s cursed.” I said softly with a sniffle.

“Cursed? How so?” He asked, trying to keep our first conversation going.

“Bad luck runs rampant throughout the month in my family.” I said as I recalled some of my worst memories. “When I was in fifth grade,” I started, taking a deep breath, “my grandma was diagnosed with an advanced stage of breast and ovarian cancer. I didn’t really know what it was, but I could tell by my parents’ reaction that it was bad. Cancer took her life on September 24th. The following year was even worse. We had to put down the only pet I’d ever known on September 10th.” I said as I took another deep breath, “The next day, as you might have guessed, was the terrorist attacks.” I started to tear up again as my voice crumbled, “And now this. The only times I’ve ever felt this -- this devastated -- has been in September.”

“I know it’s hard, Matt,” Brayden said as he comforted me, “but it’s times like this where we find our strength.” He said as we saw the lights of the city in the distance. We were almost there.

When we got to the emergency room, the staff wouldn’t let Brayden in. He told me he’d wait as long as he had to, so I squeezed him tight and suggested he try to catch a nap while he could. He agreed and made me promise to keep him updated.

Bryan was in the room and got up when I entered. He came and hugged me and said, “Matt, I’m so glad you’re safe!” He looked like a mess. Bryan was about six feet tall and had swimmer’s build like Brayden. He wasn’t a swimmer, though. His shaggy brown hair complimented the scruff on his face, but his eyes gave away all the emotion. The hazel eyes I knew were red and bloodshot from the stress of the night.

“Did I make it in time?” I asked softly as I took a gulp. That was the hardest question I’d asked yet.

Bryan nodded and said that Dad was still unconscious, but Mom had been in and out of sleep since her arrival. He walked me over to Mom’s bed and I saw she had tubes coming from everywhere. I pulled a chair to the side of the bed and grabbed her hand and spoke quietly. “Mom,” I said in a near-whisper, “I made it.” I started to tear up, so I continued as my voice became shaky, “I’ve got good news for you, too.” I said. I could see her chest slowly rise and fall with each breath.

I didn’t know how to continue when Mom squeezed my hand and turned her head. “Well,” she said with a soft voice, “are you going to tell me the good news, or are you going to leave me in suspense all night?” Tears were streaming down my face as I nodded and looked at her.

“Of course!” I said softly as I let go of her hand. “There’s someone I want you to meet, Mom. I’ll be right back.” Bryan looked at me confused as I walked out to get Brayden.

When I reached the waiting room, Brayden was still awake. He jumped up and hugged me tight once he saw the tears down my face.

“Brayden,” I started, “come with me.” I said as I pulled him along and got him signed in.

Bryan still looked confused when I walked back in the room, and I pulled Brayden over to Mom’s side. “Mom,” I said and took a deep breath, “this is my boyfriend, Brayden.”

I’m sure it was just a few seconds in actuality, but it seemed just like the time I first saw Brayden in real life. My heart was pounding through my chest and Brayden had his arm around my shoulder as we waited for my mother to respond.

“Oh, Matt.” she said as she reached out to grab my hand. I took it willingly and she continued, “I’m glad you finally have someone who can return the love you give to them.”

“So...” I started, “you don’t care that I’m gay?” I said as I looked into her eyes.

“No, Matt, I don’t. All your father and I have ever wanted is for you and brother to be happy. When you’re happy, we’re happy. Okay?” She said as I nodded my head and smiled for the first time in several hours.

“I don’t care either, Matt,” Bryan started as I turned around, “I may not understand, but you’re still my brother.”

“And you, Brayden,” Mom said, bringing my attention back to hers, “I can tell you’re special to him. That means you’re special to me, too.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Connors,” Brayden said with a smile and squeezed my shoulder, “he is very special to me, too.”

“Please,” my mom started, “either call me ‘Mom’ or ‘Jamie.’”

“Okay, Mom!” Brayden exclaimed as a grin crept across his face.

“Now, boys, I think we could all use some sleep.” Mom started, “I love you boys. All three of you.” She said as she wished us a good night.

----------

While we were leaving the hospital, Bryan asked us where we were going to stay. After talking, Brayden and I decided that we’d travel back to the dorm room and return to visit tomorrow. I was feeling better and so was he, so we decided that if we got tired, we’d pull over and switch.

We made it back to the dorm around four in the morning and immediately went to bed in a tangled mess of limbs. I thanked Brayden for joining me, to which he told me he was glad he got to meet my mom.

My phone’s ringtone awoke me from my slumber some time later. It was bright in the room, so I figured it was late in the morning. “Hello?” I said groggily as I answered Evan’s phone call.

“Matt? Are you just waking up?” He asked, clearly surprised since we left his apartment around midnight.

“Yeah. I had a long night last night.” I said, still tired from the wake-up call.

“Everything okay?” He asked, concerned.

“Uh,” I said, stumbling for an answer, “not exactly. My parents were hit by a drunk driver last night and Brayden and I went to see them in the hospital. We didn’t get back until four-ish.” I said, trying to keep the story short.

“Shit, man. Sorry to hear that. Well, my parents are here and I was calling to see if you were still up for lunch. If not, I understand.” Evan said, my night clearly deflating his mood.

“You know, it would probably be a good distraction,” I started, “but, can Brayden come too?”

“Sure!” He said, glad to hear I was still up to meet his parents. I asked him about the plan, and he confirmed that it was still on if I was okay with it. “Okay then,” he said, “See you in a half hour or so!”

I shook Brayden and told him we needed to shower so we could meet Evan and his parents for lunch.

“Wait, what?” He said in confusion, “I thought it was just you going?”

“It was, but I’d really like it if you could be there. Saves me the trouble of explaining the story later, anyway!”

Brayden smiled and said it was okay with him, so we got up to get ready for the day. After we’d showered and changed, I went over to Jason’s room and knocked on his door. I thought I’d give him an update on my parents.

He opened the door in a hurry and was glad to see we were back. I told him that both my parents were still alive, although dad had been unconscious the whole time. Then, I got a text from Evan saying he and his parents were on the way to the fast food place. I responded and told him we’d be there soon.

----------

When I made it to the restaurant, I saw where Evan and his parents were sitting. Brayden and I ordered our food and got our drinks ready. Once we had our drinks, we started walking towards Evan’s table. We weren’t going to sit there right away, but we were going to go to a table or a booth that was close. When I walked by, I went to the booth that was connected to theirs and sat on the bench that was touching the bench that his parents were sitting at. I wore my poker face to perfection, which was aided by sunglasses. I noticed his mom stare at me when I walked by, but she didn’t say anything the first time. After a few minutes, I got up to go wait for our order, so I removed my sunglasses and left them on the table. I was facing away from his parents this time, so I winked at Evan as I walked by.

Once I had our food, I made sure to walk by again. This time, it was almost as if his mom was waiting for me, as she was making no attempt to hide her stare. I avoided it as best I could, but I noticed her elbow her husband when I walked by. I could tell they were whispering something when I heard Evan ask his parents what was wrong.

I was still standing up at the booth, pretending to check the receipt for the correct order. Since these booths weren’t tall, I saw his father turn his head and look at me as I stood. I turned my head and smiled, and he returned it.

“Well, I’ll be damned,” he said as Evan smiled in the background, “that is a face I wasn’t expecting to see today.” He got up and I figured he was going to shake my hand, so I extended mine first. He accepted and said, “The name’s Dan Schmidt. And this,” he started as his wife left the booth, “is my wife Mary.”

Mary was already leaving the booth when he said this so I moved my hand towards her. She did not return the hand shake, however, as she immediately went into a hug. As she was squeezing me I could hear her soft voice say, “I was starting to think I wasn’t going to see you again.” I could tell this meant as much to them as it did to me. When she released me, she said, “Come, Matthew, join us!” I looked at her in surprise as I hadn’t told her my name yet.

When we sat down, Evan and I gave each other a high five since the plan had worked. “I guess that means you two have already been acquainted,” Dan started, “which means Mary and I have some explaining to do.” He smiled and said, “But first, who’s with you, Matthew?”

“Dan,” I said, “this is my boyfriend, Brayden.” I said. I was expecting to see shock in their faces, but there was nothing but smiles.

“It’s wonderful to meet you, too, Brayden.” He said as Brayden nodded and returned the sentiment. “Well, now that introductions are out of the way, I suppose I should get started.” He said, taking a deep breath, “It all started back when Mary and I were seniors in college. We were engaged to be married and ready to be done with school and start our life. Fortunately, life is full of surprises, and it certainly decided to throw us a massive curveball.”

Mary looked to Dan and continued the story for him, “Everything changed after our wedding, like we were hoping, but not the way we hoped. When we returned from our honeymoon, we had some pleasant news for our close friends and family.”

Evan laughed and said, “So what you’re saying is that Matt and I are an accident.”

“Accident?” Dan said, “Believe me, son. This was no accident. It was merely unplanned.” He said as he smiled. “We didn’t know right away if we were ready for a child, but decided we had to be. Two months into Mary’s pregnancy,” he started, “we got the second biggest surprise of our marriage. We found out we were having twins.”

I could tell the story was starting to get difficult to explain. Mary continued the story, saying, “I started doing research on everything, and my worst fears came true at that point. We simply couldn’t come up with the money to raise twins. It was close enough to raise once child, but the numbers made a second seem impossible. We explained the situation to my parents, Dan’s parents, and our two best friends.” She stopped, taking a breath.

“Jamie and Marshall Connors.” I said.

“Yes.” Dan said. “Like I said, they were our best friends. We were each other’s best man and maid of honor at our weddings. The only difference was the time between the two. Anyway, they already had a two-year old at the time and they were financially stable. We knew they could be trusted with another child, so once you were born, we finalized the adoption process.”

“We stayed friends for a few years afterwards,” Mary started, “but, through time, we drifted apart.”

“Well,” I said abruptly, “I’m glad we could meet and it’s good to finally hear the truth, but Brayden and I have to get going.” I said, with tears welling up.

Dan looked at me and said, “I’m so happy you two are being civil about this. I wish we could have told you sooner, but we just couldn’t come up with the courage. But you boys,” he started, “made us forget about being afraid to tell you.” He said as he smiled.

“Matthew, are you okay?” Mary said like a concerned mother.

“It’s about my parents,” I started, “they were in an accident last night. Drunk driver hit them and they’re in the hospital. I’m sure they’d appreciate a visit if you find the time.” I said as Brayden and I got up. Evan’s -- my parents got up and thanked us for the visit.

---------

After our lunch with my other family, Brayden and I decided to make our return trip to my hometown to visit my parents in the hospital. Once we made it to the hospital, we were informed by staff that my parents were moved to a room outside of the emergency room area. For the first time since hearing of their accident, I felt relieved.

When we made it to their new room, I saw both my parents were sitting up in bed and already talking. I smiled as I entered the room and said, “Dad! You’re awake!”

“Yes, I am.” He started, “You’re old man has the body of an ox, you know? A little accident isn’t going to stop me.” My dad was right; he was an ox. Technically, he was just built like an ox, but it’s a good fit for him. He’s 6’4” and stocky. He always seemed to have a five o’clock shadow and could probably grow one hell of a beard if he wanted to. He had always kept his brown hair short, whether that’s a couple inches or a buzz cut. He was a man’s man. Even before I knew about my real parents, you could tell that Bryan and I didn’t get our build from him.

“Of course, old man!” I said with a sly grin as I walked over to hug him. Despite his size, he’d always had a heart of gold.

“And who’s this strapping young lad with you?” He asked, raising an eyebrow. I had a good feeling that he already knew who he was, seeing as Mom was smiling.

“Dad,” I started and took a deep breath, “this is my boyfriend Brayden.”

Dad stared at me and created this incredibly awkward silence after I said that. His statue-esque expression was throwing me for a loop. “Dad?” I asked softly.

He didn’t answer that time, either, and Brayden leaned in and said, “I think I should go wait in the lobby.”

Brayden made it to the door when my dad finally showed his thoughts. “Brayden, wait.” He started, face still showing no meaningful expression. No anger, no happiness, no sadness, no fear. No emotion. Brayden stopped at the door, and my dad said, “Fuck it, I can’t hold this face anymore,” as his smile reappeared. “I am and always will be proud of you, Matt.”

“Dad!” I exclaimed, grasping my heart, “You can’t play with my emotions like that!”

He laughed earnestly as he said, “I’m sorry son, this room has been so dreadful all day long. Hospitals are so gloomy!”

“You’re gonna pay for that, dad.” I said, thinking to the surprise coming, “I have a few friends coming later, and now I’m not going to tell you who! If you thought that was mean, just you wait. Just you wait.” With that, I turned to Mom and said, “I’m sorry, but it’s his fault, mom. You’ll be waiting in suspense too! They should be here before too long, though.”

----------

I felt bad for Brayden. My parents were quizzing him on his own life. I was happy they wanted to get to know him, but it seemed almost like a job interview. At one point, Bryan showed up and joined in on the quizzing. I tried to save him as much as I could, but it was a good ‘family’ moment for us all. I got a text from Evan at one point telling me that he and his parents were on there way and about 10 minutes outside of the hospital. I smiled in anticipation as I sent him the room number my parents were in.

Bryan looked at me as I grinned and said, “What’s so funny?”

“Mom and Dad’s surprise is about 10 minutes away.” I said with the grin still apparent on my face.

“Surprise? What surprise?” Bryan asked as I remembered he wasn’t here for Dad’s devious deed.

“I came out to Dad earlier and he’s getting payback for his attempt at humor. I do feel bad for you and Mom, though. But it’s all part of the surprise now!” I said, smiling away.

I’d venture to guess the next ten minutes were hell for Mom and Dad, but before long, there was a knock on the door. I stood up and opened it, and in walked Dan and Mary.

I think the collective gasp of surprise from my Mom and Dad sucked all of the air out of the room, but what surprised me most was my father’s reaction. “Matt!” He said as he broke down and cried, “How did you know?” I could tell Mom was at a loss for words as she stared at their long lost friends.

I walked over to his bed and said, “Surprise!”

Bryan looked at me while Dan and Mary were reacquainting themselves with Jamie and Marshall and said, “Matt, what’s going on?”

“Bry,” I started and introduced the three newcomers to Bryan, “this is Dan, and Mary. They’re my biological parents.”

His eyes opened as wide as saucers as he exclaimed, “WHAT?!”

“Yep, and Evan here is my twin brother.” I said, putting my arm around Evan’s shoulder. We moved ourselves into a circle with the chairs in the room and my parents’ beds. I sat on the foot of Mom’s bed as Dan sat on the foot of Dad’s. Brayden was in a chair next to me, with Evan next to him, Bryan was next to Evan, and Mary was in between Bryan and Dan. All four of my parents shared in the explanation to Bryan.

Once the story was explained, Bryan looked like he understood. I couldn’t tell how he felt about it, but before long we had switched gears and stories all together. I couldn’t remember what was told afterwards, I was just happy to be around my family. My big family.

Around 5:00 in the afternoon, a couple of police officers came around to talk to my parents about the accident. Dan, Mary and Evan said their goodbyes and promised to stay in touch. Brayden, Bryan, and I left and went to the floor’s lobby to chat. Bryan looked at me as we were walking and said, “We’re still brothers, right?”

I smiled and put my arm around his shoulder and said, “Yeah, we’re still brothers. The way I see it,” I started, “I’ve gained a brother and two parents.”

“Good,” he said, nodding his head and patting my back.

“Say,” I started, suddenly remembering something, “are you still with Rachel? I haven’t heard you mention her yet.”

“Nah, I broke up with her a few nights ago.” He said, surprisingly not very said, “Caught ‘er red handed. Literally.”

“You know,” I said, “I always thought she was a bitch. She never really treated me like she wanted me to be her future brother-in-law.”

He looked at me shocked and said, “Awesome cuss, bro! And nice cover-up. I’d give it a 7/10. If you had called her a ‘fuckin’ bitch’, I’d have given you a nine.”

“Did you just rate his cuss?” Brayden asked with a confused laugh.

“Of course!” He said as he ruffled my hair, “His cusses are like a solar eclipse. We rarely hear them, but when we do, they’re always special.”

----------

Before long, we saw the officers leave the room. We wandered back to the room and asked what that was about.

“Oh, it’s all just formality at this point.” Dad said, “They wanted to know if we would be pressing charges against the driver, but we decided that we aren’t going to.”

Bryan looked at them and said, “Why not?” I was curious as well, but he beat me to the question.

“Boys, there are times in life when it’s nice to just be a good person.” Mom said, “The driver was killed in the accident and we don’t want to cause further pain to an already suffering family.” My heart sank as I heard about the driver. Even though I’d never met them and they’d put my parents’ lives in danger, I’d never wish death upon someone.

“Oh,” Bryan started, “I didn’t know about that.” He said as he trailed off.

“The driver had a brother who was in the accident as well. I believe he was taken to this hospital if you wanted to look into it at all.” My mom said, reading my mind.

“Will they know that you won’t be pressing charges already?”

“No, probably not. Legal system’s pretty slow around here, you know.” Dad said.

I looked at them and said, “Can I go tell the family?” I asked with hope in my eyes. I wanted to give my condolences, too. Both my parents smiled and nodded, thinking it was a good idea.

I left Bryan and Brayden in the room as I went to the nurses station. I asked her if she could give out any information about the accident, saying I was the son of the Connors’. I explained that I wanted to give my condolences, and she seemed a little hesitant as she thought about her response. I told her that I would leave immediately if the family wished, and that seemed to sway her judgement. She wrote down the room number and wished me luck.

When I made it to the room, the door was shut. I took a deep breath, and knocked on the door. After a couple seconds, there was no answer, so I knocked again. This time, the door opened a little bit and a man said, “I’m sorry, but we don’t want any visitors right now.” His eyes were red and puffy, and I could tell this was probably the worst day of his life.

Just as he was about to shut the door, I said, “Sir, my name’s Matt Connors. I just came by to offer my condolences.”

He had nearly shut the door before he realized what he heard. “Connors?” He questioned, “As in, the Connors from the accident?”

“Yes sir,” I said, “I just heard about your loss. Even though I never met your daughter, I’m very sad to hear about it. And,” I said, thinking of the better news, “I wanted to let you know that my parents aren’t going to press any charges.”

He looked at me and his eyes appeared to glisten a little bit. Surprisingly, he hugged me. “Thank you.” He said in a soft, whisper-like voice. Then, he called for his wife and as she came over, he said, “Honey, this is Matt Connors. He’s the son of the couple.”

She looked towards me with a look that seemed like confusion and shock. “Yes, ma’am. I came by to offer my condolences for the loss of your daughter. My whole family is very sad to hear about the news. Everybody makes mistakes in their life and it’s my personal philosophy that everyone deserves another chance. It’s really unfortunate that she doesn’t get any” I said. I could tell that my presence meant a lot more than even they expected it to, and their next gesture was a surprise to me.

“Would you like to say something to him?” The mother asked, referring to her son. “I can’t promise you he’d say anything back, he’s quite stunned by the whole thing.”

“If you would allow it, I would like that.” I said honestly.

“Go right ahead. He hasn’t said much to us, but he’s always been pretty shy.”

When I went into the room, I saw a guy my age lying on a hospital bed. He was swollen and bruised, but alive. “Hey.” I said calmly as I walked up to the bed. His eyes were focused on the TV, and didn’t falter from it when I spoke. “My name’s Matt Connors.” His eyes still hadn’t moved from the TV. “I’m sorry to hear about your sister.”

“Don’t be, it’s my fault, not yours.” He said as he spoke for the first time. I couldn’t tell if he was mad or just trying to keep his emotions in check. He was still watching TV.

“That’s not what I meant, I guess.” I said, “I mean, I’m sorry for your loss. It’s a terrible thing to have to go through.”

He finally looked at me. I couldn’t read him, though. He was either surprised at the concern, or pissed that I kept bothering him. He stayed silent.

“Anyway, I’ve got to get going, uh...” I said, forgetting he hadn’t told me his name. “Sorry, what was your name?”

“Dean.” He said as he looked back to the TV.

“Well, Dean, I’ll probably be back to visit my parents. Do you mind if I stop by and visit you, too?” I said, trying to be polite.

“No, it’s a free country.”

“Yeah, but it’s your room here. If you don’t want me in, I’ll respect that and stay out. I don’t want to feel like I’m intruding.” I said. I don’t know if he’d recently built a shell around himself, but it was there. It was worse than Kevin’s and probably my own. “Anyway,” I said as I started to get up and walk to the door, “I’ll see you later then, Dean. Bye!”

“See ya.” He said. The way he said it sounded scripted, so I’m sure he was just saying it to be polite. I’d definitely be back. His parents thanked me for the visit and the kind wishes and said I was welcome back anytime.

----------

I stayed and visited with my parents and Bryan until about 6:00, when Brayden and I decided it was time to head back to our dorm. We grabbed a bite to eat on the way out and before too long, we were in our room attempting to do some of the homework that we had procrastinated all weekend.

It wasn’t going so well for either of us, so Brayden told me he was going to go take a shower to attempt to refocus himself. When he returned, his hair was still damp and he had a towel wrapped around his waist and a fairly obvious bulge. I whimpered a bit to myself as I looked him up and down. He had a grin slyly creeping across his face when he saw my reaction when I got up. I felt like I was in a trance as I walked up to him and planted my tongue in his mouth. Thank God he shut the door when he came in.

Our tongues battled fiercely as the attempted to explore the inner depths of our respective mouths. I used my hands to free him from the confines of his towel, and his cock happily pointed at me. I gave him a few tugs while we kissed and eventually he broke the kiss. “Wow!” he said, “All this emotion over the--” he started to say as I put my finger to his lips. He smiled and pulled off my shirt.

We started making out again, except this time our hands were busy exploring the rest of our bodies. His skin felt like silk under my fingertips and his hands were touching me in all the right ways. He broke the kiss a second time and dropped to his knees. He was face-to-face with my shorts and fumbled with the belt to get them off. Once they were, all that was in between my most personal toy and him was my white boxer briefs. That didn’t last long, though, as those were quickly pulled off and my cock went into his mouth in a frenzy. His constant fondling and slurping had me practically squirming in pleasure as he sucked. To my shock, I felt his nose in my pubes and I almost came right there. “Brayden,” I said, “you have to stop.” He didn’t listen, and I had to try my best to control my guaranteed orgasm. “Brayden!” I said, “Please!”

He stopped, pulled off, and looked up at me with a sadness in his face. “Are you okay?” He said, concerned.

“Of course. The only reason I wanted you to stop was so that we could try something else.” I said, looking at him lovingly.

A sly grin crept across his face again as he said, “What did you have in mind?”

“I’m ready, Brayden. I need you.” I said, hoping he’d catch my drift. I know he did, but he pretended that he didn’t.

“You need me to what?” He said, showing off his great teeth.

“I need you to fuck me!”

“Ooh! That’s definitely a ten.” He said, giggling. I looked at him confused and he said, “That cuss was a ten out of ten.” He said, making me giggle. We pulled the futon out a little bit so we could set it into a bed. While we had set up the futon, he had grabbed a bottle of lube and a condom from his top dresser drawer. He laid me down gently on my back and we made out again. After he broke our kiss for the third time, he grabbed the lube and squirted a copious amount around my asshole. It was cool to the touch, but I don’t know why I ever expected it not to be. He told me to relax, and I felt a finger ease into the opening. He started blowing me while he fingered me, and soon enough I felt a second finger enter. It surprised me, but it didn’t hurt as much as I thought it might. He must have thought I was ready, as he grabbed the condom and ripped it out of the packaging.

Once the condom was on, he grabbed my legs and practically threw them over his shoulders. His cock was fully engorged and I lubed it up for him, and I was breathing hard as I felt him touch the entrance. “Go slow!” I said as I was both afraid and excited at the same time. That was a very strange feeling.

I grimaced as he inserted the head, but knew that was probably the thickest part of his dick. Not like the rest was a pencil or anything, but it wasn’t going to be worse. He looked for permission in my face to continue, so I said, “Okay, keep going.”

He pushed in inch by inch, and after some time he was all the way in. Once he told me that, I told him I was ready again. He nearly pulled all the way out, and then began to push back in. He continued at a slow pace, and before long, he was truly fucking me.

And then, he hit something. More appropriately, he grazed against my prostate and sent me into ecstasy. All the pain that was initially there was erased in that incredible moment of bliss. He continued to speed up as he expertly kept prodding me from the inside. I had my hands clenched to the futon for a long time, but released the material when he first touched my prostate. I didn’t really know what to do with my hands, so I started playing with my nipples. “Brayden,” I started as his pace had continued to quicken, “look!” I said as I smiled, “No hands!” I said as I came. It was probably the largest orgasm I’d ever had, and it was most certainly the most pleasurable.

Shortly after I came, Brayden pushed all the way in, threw his head back and I felt his cock throb inside me. Too soon, he pulled out and threw away the condom. He grabbed a wash cloth and cleaned us up. We laid there together for a few minutes as we calmed down. I looked at him and smiled, and suddenly a tear rolled down my cheek. He saw, and said, “Matt? Did I hurt you?”

I smiled and said, “Oh, no! Not at all. That was perfect!” I said, “Brayden,” I said as I gazed into his blue eyes, “I love you so much!”

His eyes glistened as he heard those words leave my mouth. “Oh, Matt! I love you too!” We both leaned forward and kissed, swapping saliva for the last time in the night. I drifted off into a deep slumber, holding the man of my dreams in my arms.

To be continued...

Matt, I know how difficult it is to write emotional chapters like this. You handled it extremely well, and brought it to a "hardfelt" conclusion

I really liked the chapter, Matt. So many questions answered and the fact that his parents are going to be OK topped it off. I have a feeling Matt will be working his wonders on Dean in the near future. Great positive actions. And, finally Brayden and Matt have fully consummated their relationship. However there certainly will be more to come....lol

I have only just begun this story, but am already hooked after two chapters. One of the things I like about it is that it thrives on anticipation and yet has not relied on the cliff hanger to create it. Instead, we know from the very unusual opening that there is some link between Matt and Brayden. Of course, we're all expecting it to be a romantic and/or sexual link. But just how is this going to play out. The plot is well paced to keep us looking ahead, looking for clues, imagining whatever we want to imagine. But we would only do that if we cared about the characters. At least in the case of Matt, I am already rooting for him to find his soulmate. It could be Brayden. Maybe not. But I am already invested in him and that isn't easy to do in two chapters. Hats off for good writing and staying away from having everyone sport 9 inch cocks and drive Audi's to go to McDonald's. And after two chapters, nothing more than a firm handshake and I'm still reading. Will there be sex ahead. More anticipation. Now this is what writing is all about. And reading too! Thanks
