LOST: you all gave up huh?

The problem is the TYPE of series this is. It's part of an ongoing trend that doesn't do one shot episodes. EVERY episode is a monumental twist or story point where in your average show does one shots and during sweeps, finales premiers you have the BIG episode and important ones sprinkled throughout (Supernatural is an excellent example of this) that type of story produces sustainabilty. The new rapid pace format produces an interesting format followed by a huge mess.

Well I don't know if you guys have picked up the new issue of Entertainment Weekly but there is some bad, bad news and if you don't wanna know then don't read any further ....

"Lost" will conclude it's third season on May 16 but won't be back for it's fourth (and possibly last) season until January of 2008

TPTB (The Powers That Be) are gonna try to deliver the entire fourth season in one re-run free process.

I remember the good ol' days (Hi, "Dallas" :D ) when a "season" ran from late September all the way to late May and that show still managed to deliver 22-28 episodes. Sure there'd be a week when "Dallas" or "Falcon Crest" wasn't on but they wouldn't play a repeat, some special or President Reagan's conference would be on :(

That's not a spoiler, just bad news.
I had already heard rumors that they were going to do that, similar to other shows like 24 where the entire season is aired without reruns.

I just don't get it, though.

Back in the 1980's (and for the most part of the '90's I think, I kinda zoned out in that decade) the TV season began in late September and concluded in late May. There would be three or four shows that wouldn't air but "Dynasty" nor "Flamingo Road" or whatever would air an old show. They'd just show a baseball game or holiday show or whatever.

And our wait for the new season would simply be three or four months (over the summer!). Nowadays there really is no such thing as a 'normal TV season.' Heck 'Survivor' is on it's 14th? 15th? season and it didn't actually begin until seven years ago.

No wonder ratings are such a crap-shoot these days. At least the internet is somehwat more catering to a fan's needs than what the CEO's think we deserve.

I think I understand what you mean. I mean shows today air for three weeks, take a break, air for five, take a break, air for two, take a break, etc. They know when they want to start (September) and end (May) and everything else in between them, is using your term a 'crap-shoot'.

Of course, we're breaking away from that entirely starting next television season, where many popular shows will air from January straight through May, no repeats.

A step in the right direction, I think. Now all we'll need are shows to air from June to December to fill the gaps, lol.
