* Album Of The Year, "Kala"
* Record Of The Year, "Bird Flu"
* Best Dance Recording, "Jimmy"
* Best New Artist - M.I.A.
* Best Pop Vocal Peformance, "Bird Flu"

Not a chance. She's far too different, innovative and talented to win any of those.

She'll sweep all the critics' "Best of 2007" polls, though.

Kala is a great album. I'm pretty sure "In Rainbows" will pick up a lot of them.

Agreed. She might be too much of an acquired taste for Grammy voters. Plus, there was more mainstream buzz for 2005's Arular.

I don't think that album made the cut-off, though.

Sorry, I didn't clarify.

I meant to say that there was more M.I.A. buzz back in 2005 when Arular was released. Kala got a lot of attention when it came out this summer, but it was considerably more low key than it's predecessor. If M.I.A. were to even be considered for a Best New Artist Grammy, it would've been in 2005. Also, "Bird Flu" was released back in 2006, so it might have missed eligibility.

Overall, critics like Kala better, but I think she'd be shut out of Best New Artist. Her best bet would probably be in the dance category; but then again, I'm not very familiar with any sort of Grammy consensus. Plus, she might have too much of a political agenda in her music for the general public.

I bet M.I.A. will be a shoe-in for the Shortlist/Mercury prize, where her work is more recognized.
