M.I.A. Confirms Collaboration with Madonna and Nicki Minaj

After releasing third album "/\/\ /\ Y /\" to mixed reviews last year, M.I.A. has been missing in action for most of 2011. However, the electro-dance artist confirmed a juicy collaboration for 2012 over the weekend by announcing that she was joining Madonna and Nicki Minaj in New York, presumably to contribute on Madge's in-the-works new album.

"Summond to NYC by bitchesses > MADONNA and @NICKIMINAJ," M.I.A. posted on Twitter on Saturday (Nov. 26). "cofffffiiiiiiieeeeeeeeee it iz a good day to get me tho trustttt bitches."

Earlier this month, the first taste of Madonna's follow-up to 2008's "Hard Candy," a demo of an uptempo single called "Give Me All Your Love," leaked in full online. Madonna responded to the leak by telling manager Guy Oseary, "My true fans wouldn't do this."

"The plan was for new music to come out in the new year, and yet someone leaked a demo version of a song yesterday. I'm very happy with the positive reaction to the demo, but we are very upset with whoever leaked the song!!!" Oseary posted on Twitter on Nov. 9. At that time, Oseary said that Madonna's new album would be completed "in the next month or so," and while rumors persist that the pop star will play the Super Bowl halftime show in February, the performance has yet to be confirmed.

For Minaj, a collaboration with Madonna and M.I.A. would cap off a year in which she added guest vocals to songs by David Guetta, Drake and Birdman, among others. Meanwhile, production duo the Cataracs (Far*East Movement's "Like a G6") confirmed to Billboard.com in April that they had been working with M.I.A. on new material, which they thought would be for "a mixtape, and she wants it to be like an album."

Chris Brown, Swizz Beatz and Polow da Don also joined the "Paper Planes" singer in the studio last spring, a few months after she released a new mixtape, "Vicki Leekx," on New Year's Eve. In July, M.I.A. released "27," a tribute song for the recently deceased Amy Winehouse.

M.I.A.'s 'Matangi' Album Pushed to April

"I've been told it's too positive," M.I.A. says of the upcoming album, which she finished "a couple of months ago" and expected to release in December.

M.I.A. has been teasing a new album for months, and now fans can finally know when to expect "Matangi," the follow-up to 2010's "Maya."

"I'm still working on it," M.I.A. told an Australian newspaper of her upcoming fourth studio album, which she says is scheduled to drop on "the Tamil new year -- April 15."

The British-Sri Lankan singer followed her July 2010 "Maya" album with a second mixtape, December 2010's "Vicki Leekx," featuring a shortened version of single "Bad Girls." Her forthcoming album was at one point slated for a December 2012 release, but was pushed to April after M.I.A. submitted the tracks to her record label.

"I thought I'd finished it. I finished it and then I handed the record in, like a couple of months ago," the "Paper Planes" singer told Australia's Gold Coast. "At the moment, I've been told it's too positive. So we're having a bit of an issue at the label. They're like, 'You need to darken it up a bit.'"

She's not necessarily making changes, but says she's taking her time to decide what is meant by "too positive." Adds M.I.A. -- who saw controversy last February after flipping the middle finger during Madonna's Super Bowl halftime show performance -- "It's like, 'We just built you up as the public enemy No. 1 and now you're coming out with all this positive stuff.'"

In an August chat with fans on Twitter, M.I.A. revealed that her upcoming album will feature "no collabs," and producers "that don't act like fame whore coloniser," which may be construed as a shot at her estranged former collaborator, Diplo. She also clarified that "Bad Girls," her single released earlier this year and remixed alongside artists like Missy Elliott, Rye Rye and Azealia Banks, will appear on the forthcoming album.

The album title, "Matangi," references both a Hindu goddess and M.I.A.'s birth name (Mathangi).

M.I.A. Documentary [Trailer]

Singers M.I.A. and Janelle Monae shared the stage during separate concerts on opposite coasts through the magic of holograms.

M.I.A. performed in New York with a 3-D projection of Monae Thursday night while Monae sang on the West Coast with M.I.A.'s likeness.

Both artists have ideas for how they might use performance holograms beyond their bi-coastal duet, which was sponsored by Audi to launch its A3 model.

The high-tech duet required more advanced 3-D projection and video mapping technology than Tupac Shakur's hologram debut at the annual Coachella music festival in 2012. M.I.A. and Monae performed together in person to help create the holograms, but each saw the results for the first time onstage.
