Hate to say this, but I don't know any other big budget directors who have ruined movies? Besides Uwe Boll. ;) Sorry to Boll fans!

Oh I dunno. I can think of some big names that were horrible directors in huge budget movies. George Lucas comes to mind.

The question in the poll isn't fair. He's a great director. Even stunning at times. There's nothing wrong with his direction. Even his worst movies have all been at least fairly good in every technical sense. They're well-made. The problem is his horrendous screenwriting and the arrogance he apparently has that tells him what he writes is good. His first three major movies were all fairly good. I loved Signs. But after that, he got very cocky and his writing went to shit. He needs to stop directing his own scripts. I think if he got over himself and started directing other people's screenplays, he could be an Oscar-caliber director.

Just got back from Inception and they showed the trailer for Shyamalan's next movie. Again, he's going to have to pull some big tricks to make this one work. Five people stuck in an elevator. One of these people is not who they appear to be. Devil

hmmm, ok.

He didn't write or direct that movie. He just produced it. If the screenplay isn't his, it has a chance of being decent.

I saw it that way too. When Shymalann's name appeared on the screen one guy in the audience said "Oh God" and another groaned loudly.

save for The Sixth Sense, all other Shyamalan films have been TERRIBLE. Whether that qualifies him for worst big budget director, who knows?

I must say though Lady In The Water is one self-centred, self-indulgent piece of crap!

I don't know, I really liked Unbreakable...and I didn't think The Village was terrible. I could never make it through Signs though...I couldn't stand Mel Gibson even before he went psychotic.

M. has another Flick coming soon about a "Demon" killing people in an Elevator...LOL...

When I saw the previews @ the theatre i sorta laughed......

I was a closet fan of his even through Lady in the Water and The Village.

I pretty much had lost my "fandom" with the The Happening, though I think I've lost hope with Avatar. If you watch the series at all he took it in a totally different direction it didn't need to nor should have gone. Terrible.

took me a while to find the trailer. Hmm. Not sure about this one, but it doesn't look too awful

I think his movies were pretty good up until Signs. The Village was decent. Like it has already been said, the "big twist" was given away far too soon. Lady in the Water was pretty bad. It could have been better if he didn't give himself such a large role and make his character the hero of the movie. I haven't seen Avatar, but my eight-year-old brother did and he thought it was horrible.

I think what he really needs is to stop doing everything himself. Writing, directing, producing, starring and doesn't he edit his own films? Maybe hand some of those roles off to other people that way they can give him feedback.

His movies of late make just enough money to warrant studios financing him.

Ya know what? I misspoke in my earlier comment.
I said "Signs" but what I meant to say was "The Happening"..
You're right, Signs was pretty decent. It was "The Happening" that was dumb as fuck.

..LOL...I forgot he directed "The Happening"....That was stupid...I was very upset about wasting my money to watch people run away from a calm wind...I got "snookered" on that one...

Didnt he direct "the lady in the river" or something? I was told that was another mess...

I thought it didn't bode well for The Happening when the best slogan the publicity people could come up with was, "M. Night Shyamalan's first R-rated film!"

Other than The Sixth Sense, I'm not a fan, although I do agree with doctorsun that he does have talent as a director, but not as a writer.

And I wish he'd stop making those painful cameo appearances in his films...
